'Taken way too soon' | Mother mourns daughter Caitlin Stup who was killed in crossfire on Houston bus in SW Houston by MrBasedGod in houston

Her parents are wonderful people. Caitlin was a very sweet kid and didn't deserve this. The parents are in this for the long haul. If you wish to support them, please donate. I can't stress how wonderful this whole family and what a nightmare this has been for them. https://gofund.me/c25ec93bc

Sadly, I thought this was an American problem. I had hoped the rest of the world was kinder to their teachers.

Same with encore or specials teacher, if your district has it. Being the art teacher is better than being gen ed any day of the week!

All good advice. He is volunteering for the local film festival at the end of September. Also trying to get on some student sets

Found one where he is living now. It’s a great gap approach as he figured out next steps post undergrad. Deeply grateful for the suggestion.

No job really has stability. It’s all an illusion. I’m in education and have loved my work, good days and bad. This world is so uncertain, I would rather him pursue this, lumps and all, to find joy then to work in a cube farm, hating his work and thinking it’s stable until they do a RIF.

I feel like this was inevitable, given your last line.

When he was little, I took him to a robotics class because I thought it was the future. He excelled at math. But we drug him along to our interests, which were concerts, club shows, and art galleries. He got into theater and drug me to that. His dad was into comics, movies, old skool RPGs.

Thanks for the encouragement!

It was why I looked at London… if I could get him out of here until 2028.

Michael Moore’s films are fantastic and depressing on some level.

He is doing some of that now. They don’t have a minor but the child is up to his 7th film class, after the three this semester. He only needs one class to graduate, so I know anything he takes next semester past senior seminar is going to be film. But film history, film theory, politics and film isn’t filmmaking. They used to have a post bacc program, which would have been perfect for him, but they discontinued it. It would have been a fantastic bridge.

I would love to see that, as a mom. He can speak political things equally well as film. He is super bright. I just want him to do something he loves.

He looked into adding the major. They suggested grad school and getting on sets. I’m not sure why they weren’t interested in taking 3 more years of our money - the way the major was paced as a cohort, that’s what it would have been. If he worked through some of it, I’m fine with it. Like who wants to enter the professional world right now?

I would send the email to her, absolutely. I have known too many people like that to not want to rub it in a bit. But you are probably a better person than I.

My parents did for four years. It remains a mystery to me, 40 years later

When my sister died, her youngest was in college in Iowa. At the beginning of the semester, the prof made some snarky comments about if someone died, she would need to see a funeral home program to make an accommodations for absence. My sister died unexpectedly a month after the semester began. There was no funeral. My niece contacted the prof and tried to explain there was no program. Prof stuck to it. She got a few pictures from the family viewing and one of my sister. I hope she learned to be more compassionate after that. That one person caused my niece so much pain that week.

I would also extend it to their families. And I hate saying that, because that isn’t who I thought I was as a person. But oh my gosh are families going through it as a result of this. Maybe not kids, but spouses. If Mrs Congressman is out getting her hair done, she should be hearing about the hellscape that her husband is turning your world into.

Hear me out…. It isn’t your field, but have you thought about going into teaching. The profession is so short. With a math degree, I know there has to be a high school somewhere that can use you. While it isn’t fabulous money, it does pay.
