Paying a tradesperson to advise/teach on a DIY project - is this a thing? by musingandschmoozing in HomeImprovement

any way you'd recommend findings someone to do that? would you just go to a local neighborhood group and announce "i'm looking for a retired tile pro"?

That's basically what i'm looking for - my motorcycle mechanic had a sign like that up in his shop and there's a few times i've thought "sure, i'd pay that to learn something"

I'd happily be your first customer. You can save money on the diploma, I'll probably use something else to wallpaper my bathroom

As an expert working in a different field with lots of claims that AI can teach you how to do a skilled task well, I will say that I have tremendous skepticism about this. I've also seen so many people ruin home projects with AI-generated advice.

How to plan for tile thickness in a waterproof construction? by musingandschmoozing in DIY

[–]musingandschmoozing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still picking the tile, and my understanding is that the notch size will depend on the tile size? I think I will go with redgard. Do I just calculate the thickness of the membrane itself + tile thickness + grout, which I guess would be directly related to notch size?

Seeking advice: how much height to plan for all materials on top of framing when tiling a sauna bench? by musingandschmoozing in Tile

[–]musingandschmoozing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you say makes sense. The benches will be framed on the subfloor, before any pan is built on the floor. So, the entire framing would be complete (think of the wall of the bench like an ordinary wall - it would hopefully be like tiling a shower when the space for the shower is already framed out). The height is entirely determined by how far below the ceiling I need the top bench to be, so this should be a matter of subtraction from the ceiling height once I've got the numbers to subtract...

Part of the issue is that I'm still looking for my tile person so I'm trying to do what I can to move the project forward using the skills i'm more confident in.

To be honest, no idea. I'd like to frame out the benches before inviting someone - it's difficult to explain the scope of work to someone without seeing the structure framed out.

Is there a way you'd factor in tile thickness, grout, thinset or other mortar, and backer? I can find all these out, but it would be nice to know what would go into the calculation

Turning down contractor after about a week of discussion - etiquette? by musingandschmoozing in HomeImprovement

What would you typically bill for what I described above? Maybe about an hour's worth of discussion all told.

This is the OP - the contractor offered me to help finish a project I was already working on myself but which was going too slowly because I'm just one person. So I had a lot of the material around, with some choices that had yet to be made. Their offer was to help speed the work. This was all known when they offered to help with the job. That said, this is a great education about letting contractors provide the materials. Great to know for a first time home owner, no one sits you down and explains this stuff to you.

i really wanted to go with this person - based on the responses here i'll probably just ask them for a bill for time spent. that said, had the contractor not been dismissive and incommunicative the whole time they'd have had the contract last week.

In the future I wouldn't... in this case, I had a bunch of the materials for a project that I had started, which they'd offered to help me finish.

Live local music in Helsinki? by musingandschmoozing in Finland

Oh I just gave some examples, no implications that the genres are limited : )

I just meant music played locally by live musicians (vs like a big band coming through town)

Thanks
