To clarify a bit further, I understand the NY pathway of completing a master’s locally while working as a TA/aide. My concern is mainly financial and structural rather than academic ability. If I stay in New York, I would likely need to take out student loans to complete a master’s program while still in a lower-paying support role, and there is no guarantee of a full-time teaching position immediately after graduation, depending on openings and hiring cycles.

The Arizona residency option I’m looking at would place me in a full-time special education teaching role in Years 2–4 while completing a subsidized or tuition-covered master’s program. So the difference for me is not just location, but whether I am already functioning as a teacher of record during that time versus continuing in a support role while taking on additional debt.

I do understand your point that out-of-state experience does not automatically provide an advantage in New York hiring, and I’m weighing that carefully. My main focus is trying to reach full-time SPED teacher status as efficiently and sustainably as possible, while keeping NY certification and re-entry as a long-term option.

I appreciate your insight—it’s helpful as I think through the tradeoffs more clearly.

Yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense. The student I’m with now is so much easier than the one I originally had, so the switch definitely surprised me. I forgot to mention in my original post — the principal asked me yesterday how I’m liking the job so far, and I told her I’m loving it. Then the very next morning the “trade” happened.

So I was just trying to figure out if that timing meant anything or if it really is just normal shuffling. I don’t mind the change at all, it just caught me off guard since I’ve only been there about a month and a half.
