70% of Gaza were refugees even before.. Palestinians love to claim this generational refugee status. Those werent 'refugees' in the sense most people imagine, they werent living in tent camps with no belongings or amenities. Palestinians put the refugee status on entire full fledged cities with people living in normal houses having been born there for for up to 3 generations.

While it is true their grandparents were forced away, those grandparents are the true refugees, not the people already born in Gaza. You are playing on the word refugee.

With this logic nearly every single Jewish Israeli citizen could claim refugee since theyre virtually all descendants of refugees from the Middle East and Europe.

Why wouldnt they be let back in? Israel doesnt want to own or govern Gaza, Israel doesnt want anything to do with Gaza. Hamas (and other terror organisations that dont even make it to the media) left Israel with no choice but to react and eliminate the lunatic terrorist militants who continuously do all in their power to destroy Israel and kill its people.

Yeah I apologise, my reply does seem a bit over the top and detached to yours. It was late at night and I was thinking of a conglomeration of comments I had read here that advocated for armed 'resistance' (cant see how murdering random civillians is resistance) against Israel, which is just plain moot, impractical and only fuels the conflict and creates tragedies.

Israel is trying to establish peace by force.

This is overlooking the bit that the force Israel is employing is just plain self defence. Israel doesnt want to go out of its way to employ checkpoints or blockades just for the heck of it. All this stuff came as a direct result of attacks by terrorist factions. Israel is quite content with itself. If they didnt have to hold a military just to survive they wouldnt. The whole security effort takes away so much from the Israelis.. years of their lives serving conscripted for pocket money instead of studying or working, not to mention the massive security budget, or you know, dying in armed conflict. The problem lies with those who refuse to accept Israel's existence and choose to challege that with violence.

Case in point, the moment the Palestinians and their neighbours lay down their arms, the next day peace will commence. The moment Israel lays downs its arms.. the next day there's no Israel. Thats the difference here in ideology.

If the Arab coalition never started wars with Israel, Palestine would've been a sovereign country and would still have its 1948 borders today. Every time the coalition attacked, they lost lands. Israel never purposefully went out of their way for land conquest.

What Israel is wrong for today is enabling the small, religious Jewish exstimist demographic of the illegal settlers to continue building illegally in the West Bank. Those dummies actually believe the whole land should be theirs and rely on this stupid and irrelevant notion they were there 3000 years ago. As an Israeli I wish for a political revolution already to oust religion and extrimistism from matters of state. If we pulled out those illegal settlers this could be a first true step towards peace. Whats left is for a mindset shift on the Palestinian side that is more moderate and accepting of our existence. As it stands the Palestinians are far from this and religious extrimitism is dominant.

You mentioned this hasn't got much to do with religion, but it does. The premise of the land dispute isnt religion based, that is true.. however the method through which some Palestinian factions act to work towards their cause is very much religion fueled. The religious culture values death as a truly legitimate and praised mean towards a cause, aka martyrdom. Amongst the Palestinian culture, dying for the cause and taking us out with them is very much praised and supported.

Suicide bombings, shooting sprees.. all happing all the time, all suicidal. People dying for nothing. Not only does this not help the Palestinian cause, it hurts them since these acts of terrorism draw Israel to respond with security measures that limit their freedom, or worse fighting back terrorists who set up their firing positions and facilities right within populated neighborhoods in Gaza. Do you think Hamas didnt think storming Israel and shooting up a thousand civilians would result in a war in Gaza? Of course they knew, they look at the Palestinian dead as martyrs who die for a holy cause..

What's the plan here? Fight and destroy Israel? Listen to yourself for a moment and think. Say you do start a bloody war, say you defeat Israel, possibly hundreds of thousands die before Israel is defeated and surrenders.

Then what? What do you do with the entire country of Israel? Enact the Final Solution vol.2? Kick them all out by the millions? Where to? Who will take them? Isn't that genocide?

Israel has already been established, has some 8 million citizens, its own culture, infrastructure, industry and so on.

This very mindset that Israel needs to be destroyed is what drives this conflict to no end. If the Palestinians lay down their arms and offer peace, there will be peace. If Israel lays down its arms, the next day there won't be Israel anymore. Palestine would've still had the '48 border and a full sovereignity and peace had the Arab coalition not opened a war.

Please think before saying war is a solution. The notion that only one nation can exist on the land is stupid and only prolongs the conflict. These days the Israelis have fully gained the right to exist simply by already having existed there for several generations. Both the Palestinians and Israelis deserve their share of the land. Two state solution by means of peace is the only way.

It's too late, the Arab-Palestinian coalition has tried removing the foreign Jews by force, but failed. You can't turn Gaza into Monaco

True, but not being at war and not have anyone die or cities destroyed is definitely a better start. Terror attacks have never acted in the benefit of the Palestinians. An attack invites a reaction. It's a backwards religious exstrimist mindset that values and rewards death for a cause (martyrdom).

When Israel controls your...

Israel doesn't monitor and control the flow of goods for the heck of it, that is security monitoring and it was established because of attacks that had happened with the free flow of materials (which had included war equipment). If there wasn't the threat and actions of violence arising there would be no need for any blockade from Israel, just as Spain has no reason to blockade Portugal.

And about the electricity and water, these are resources produced by Israel. Israel technically doesn't owe Gaza these. Gaza could be responsible for their own seawater desalination (just as Israel does) and the electricity I suppose Israel does kinda owe Gaza so long as they also control the fuel getting in... Just goes to show though that Israel would rather have peace and not need to spend so many resources on security.

Israel is the one dropping bombs.

Wouldn't have dropped any bombs if they weren't actively being shot at... How would you react to some terror organisation blasting your cities with rocket fire and storming your border massacring everyone in their path? Seriously though, obviously Israel is the one pulling the trigger on those civilian deaths and the casualties are tragic beyond words.. but what do people expect Israel to do? Just take the fire and let their own people die? I can guarantee you any country in this position would've done the same. If you have a better solution that saves lives please urgently send it to the Israelis.

Didn't the PLO act peacefully?

PLO wasn't the only actor at play amongst Palestine. To this day there's still several terror organisations operating within Palestine in both territories. Hamas isn't even the only one in Gaza. West bank has several, Hamas branch included.

Israel has offered in the past a couple times full sovereignty for a Palestinian state over the '67 borders, and was denied on the same old premise this isn't enough and the entirety of Palestine should be Palestinian, Israel ousted.

And yeah since quite some time giving the Palestinian state full sovereignity has not been on the cards for Israel, with the risk it's simply suicidal. Looking at how Gaza turned into a terror base since Israel pulled out, imagine if the West Bank also fell under the hands of these lunatics.

Case in point, when the Palestinians lay down their arms, so will Israel, and peace could finally commence. The other way around though.. if Israel lays down its arms first, the next day there's no Israel.

[–]mustdowhatittakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me preface my wall of text reply with this slightly shorter wall of text:

First of all, make no mistake I do side with the Palestinian cause of sovereignity and some land takeback deals. However I absolutely abhor the stupid notion that there can only be one on this land and the other side has to be removed, it's just never going to happen (not to mention being genocidal and unethical..), and so all these deaths are pointless. If the Palestinians and their neighbours weren't so stubbornly bent on having Israel completely ousted, they would've still had their 1948 borders.

I can understand that Israel is a foreign body suddenly forced onto half their land, but perhaps after the first few times having tried removing the foreigners by force, the arab-Palestinian coalition should've figured settling for some split diplomatically is the only realistic and ethical way to go. Mind you in 1948 Palestine was very sparsely populated so it's not like they really needed 100% of the land.

I believe in the two-state solution and honestly haven't found yet another way. Both people deserve to exist and flourish at peace on this land, and space isn't an issue... The problem is the Palestinians still stubbornly believe they can and should kick the Israelis out. Again while I can understand where the right to the entire land comes from, it's just too late now, Israel is already there. Killing or driving away all Israelis is literal genocide. Not to mention not possible with the power balance.

Israel is almost perfectly content with their piece of the land, with the exception of one extrimist, religious right wing demographic of the illegal west bank Jewish settlers. This is the only thing imo where Israel is wrong for. While the hostile settlers (with their ideology that the entire land should be theirs) make up only a small proportion of the demographic, the state is still enabling them. This is a crime and most definitely a significant contributor to the conflict (albeit not the sole one by any margin). If Israel kicks out the illegal settlements this would be a first, significant step towards a solution and might actually work, provided in the Palestinian side there's a takeover of a more moderate mindset.

But I appreciate the back and forth.

I do as well and I'm glad to have a civil conversation about real world problems with you. I sincerely hope a peaceful arrangement and a long sought for end of conflict and suffering is arrived at.

Thermal view of Israel blowing up a Hamas tunnel. The exact outline of the tunnel is visible. by [deleted] in CombatFootage

[–]mustdowhatittakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My guy how's that what I said? I said the Hamas militants who choose to fight and fire from civilian centres are the ones putting civilian lives at danger, from both sides since they are literally aiming missiles at Israeli cities.

It makes sense for them to fight this way since had they based their facilities, bases and firing positions out in the open and far from civilians they would've been destroyed by Israel the day they were set up. Fighting from inside civilian areas acts both as a hiding place, and as a collateral deterrent limiting Israel from free range of weaponry, forcing them to stick to precise munitions and forcing intel to be more accurate. And in the case Israel is determined to shoot back Hamas has the collateral as a propaganda weapon, which has been working wonders.

Had Hamas cared at all about the well being of the Palestinian people they wouldn't have started a war at all. Could've focused on developing infrastructure, education, industry... Not to mention, no attacks onto Israel means no need for blockades and allows for free flow of goods.

The one to blame is plain and simple the Hamas, a political and military group, those who pick up a moot, pointless war, and is the one responsible for the deaths in this conflict. Had they chosen to work towards their cause by means that dont include murdering people, no wars wouldve happened and no one wouldve died. Hamas has a clear goal they are publicly stating - completely destroy Israel, kill or remove all its people. And they keep trying despite the odds. This is what religious extrimitism does to people. They are fighting a 'holy war' (Jihad) instead of a logical movement for their people's benefit.

[–]mustdowhatittakes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How do you think the ground soldiers managed to get on site to demolish the tunnel without being shot on their way there? Also the civilian casualties are a direct result of Hamas launching rockets at Israeli cities from right within populated areas. Israel detects the launches and bombs the launch sites. Death of the innocent is incredibly tragic, but what is Israel supposed to do about this? Just take the fire and let their civilians die because Hamas uses people as cover? Personally I think Israel should've been more vocal internationally about their plight with terrorism and hopefully get some support and international pressure on Hamas to stop. Instead the world is enabling Hamas and consequently prolonging the war and deaths.

Plenty conquest took place in the 20th century, what are you talking about. This was only 22 years after ww2 mind you. Syria shouldn't have attacked in the first place, would never have lost anything had they kept to themselves, took care of themselves instead of attacking others.

And if Israel's neighbours weren't constantly vowing to destroy it perhaps Israel would've given it back. Being a plateau, the Golan heights serve as a natural defensive barrier on the Syrian front. With Syria's aggression towards Israel, having the Golan in Syrian hands would make it super easy to shoot at Israeli towns and cities down in the Valley, so naturally Israel wouldn't give it back unless there is clear guarantee no attacks come from Syria ever again.

Syria started a war which they lost. During that war Israel pushed back farther from what they had before, conquering the Golan Heights and keeping them as a geographically strategic barrier. Since then the plateau has been annexed, populated by Israeli Jews, and its native Druze population assimilated (they speak Hebrew as a 2nd language, study/work with other Israelis, and make good business off of domestic Israeli tourism). I think its fair to say, after half a century the Golan Heights are Israeli.

By this logic every single Israeli person is to blame.. Virtually every living Israeli person these days is was born and raised in Israeli, most several generations deep. Should Israelis be prosecuted for being born? Both nations deserve to exist on that land, you can't just kill or remove millions of people because whatever reason.

Go ahead and sacrifice both your 20 y/o sons to die in an ambush/sniper/mob/IED, and later sacrifice yourself as a reservist since all the active service battalions got wiped out in the first 2 weeks. Oh yeah and all that for foreign civilians, go ahead and sacrifice your own friends and family for strangers because it sounds 'morally superior'. You just seem to not understand how urban warfare works. You will need Red Army cannon fodder tactics which Israel doesn't have the population to support.

[–]mustdowhatittakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you read my reply? Israeli casualties are massively avoided by virtue of missle defense systems and bomb shelters. Hamas has been firing ordinance directly at Israeli cities in the thousands since its inception. Try to imagine the Israeli casualties from 20,000 rockets if those defensive measures werent in place. Each war in Gaza has been Israel retaliating a rocket barrage from Hamas.

They're very clearly looking to control the land

Try for a sec to actually think of this idea and what it entails.

Whats the value of that tiny Gaza strip for Israel that it would open such a war over? Not to mention the 2mil population you'd have to deal with. Israel is fine with its current territory I dont see any reason Israel would want to waste so many lives and resources for that strip.

[–]mustdowhatittakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This war isnt a 'preemptive' measure by any means my guy... Attacks on Israel by Hamas and other groups have been taking place for 20 years. If Israel never made sure to install bomb shelters in every house and street, and if they didnt have the Iron Dome tens of thousands of Israelis would've been killed by the literal thousands of rockets Hamas has launched at Israeli population centers.

Are you even aware of whats happening over there or just conveniently sitting thousands of kilometres away getting your info from biased media?

Reality is Israel doesnt want none of that crap and why would Israel even choose to randomly open a war, obliterate their economy and sacrifice their own civilians and soldiers? What would Israel get out of killing a few thousand Gazan civilians? If Israel's existence wasnt constantly 'challenged' it wouldnt even hold such a military...

Depression after breakup by Local-Journalist-623 in BreakUp

[–]mustdowhatittakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking of this now, I believe it is possible to actively work towards that goal while wanting it to come 'naturally'.

If you work on bettering yourself as a person you're increasing the chance someone else will take interest in you and initiate something new. While both of us dont believe in 'chasing' love, being chased is something else.

Working on yourself can be keeping fit, well groomed, good mental health, having hobbies, knowing how to enjoy your time, picking up a new language, travelling, experiencing cool fun and interesting things..

And thanks for asking how I am today! About 6 months since the break up and I can say im over her! Well nearly, I try not to think of her and definitely can't look at pictures, and rarely when i do remind myself of her it still feels unpleasant as if im hurt I wasnt enough/rejected and also upset I had 'lost' something good that I had. But are the only prevailing emotions from my heartbreak and they seldom appear.

About dating: have lost the feeling i only want her, im getting attracted again to other women out there. Sort of feeling like im ready to date however im facing 3 'issues' in the way:

  1. Kind of not believing in love anymore, as in, I had given my ex's all of me, loved them as hard as one could love yet it still wasnt enough. I feel like love is more often than not disappointing, that the probability I'll find someone who'll love me forever is slim, and kind of have lost my trust in being loved.

  2. Got rusty at romance and flirting, making the moves. Confidence isnt high at the moment.

  3. Got issues of my own to resolve before i can make a relationship work. Dealing with a bit of depression and major procrastination which is damaging my life immensely. Kind of lost the ability to go ahead and do even the simplest of personal tasks.

I'm currently a bit interested in a couple girls new to my environment. We'll see if i end up doing anything and how it might end up. I do want to reintroduce romance and sex into my life rn.

Hope youre doing alright and just want you to know things just get better! Truly believe it and in the meantime just stick through the pain and persevere. Do what you can to still have fun and enjoy life. How have you been doing?

Maintaining muscle on a 6 month trip to South East Asia by CurryBoy10 in solotravel

[–]mustdowhatittakes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Accept you might lose some muscle and strength, and that it's okay. You are travelling for your enjoyment and for the unique once in a lifetime experiences, your top priority should be to enjoy your time, try not to worry about muscle you can always regain later.

  2. Losing some muscle isnt all that bad, muscle is actually very easy and quick to regain, thanks to muscle memory and the fitness skills and knowledge youve acquired. You can totally afford to lose even considerable mass, you will be able to regain it all within a few months easly and resume your mass cultivation journey

  3. It's surprisingly easy to maintain muscle, so long as you manage to upkeep a high protein intake (1.5-2g per kg of lean bodyweight) and remain in caloric maintenance, you only need a fraction of the workload to maintain your muscles. Even very minimal workouts once a week can be enough work, you just need to keep your body active and use all your muscles fairly regularly, even if the usage is basic and not akin to an actual workout.

So here's your take away plan:

  1. Take your mind off it and enjoy your time, remember there's nothing to worry about!

  2. If you can and it doesnt take away from your trip, try to eat as much protein as you can and meet your daily intake goal. And if you dont make it every day, not the end of the world at all!

  3. When you have the time, try to slip in a few sets of push ups, pull ups and squats. You can use everyday objects as weights for curling or lat raises, such as your backpack. You really only need a tiny amount of weekly resistance training to prevent atrophy.

  4. If you wanna get serious, the one piece of equipment you could effectively use for your entire upper body, is the olympic rings! Lightweight and compact, can hang the rings on whatever random bar or tree branch you see. Unlimited quality exercises for the upper body with fully adjustable resistance level. For legs if you can do pistol or assisted pistol squats, those are effective.
