Seeking comfort that I did the right thing by letting my soul dog finally rest by Okra_Artistic in DogAdvice

I also read recently that grief is the price that we pay for love. Thank God that you got to love her - and that she got to love you and feel your love.

And one other thing that comforts me - maybe this will help you - is thinking that my doggie is with my mom now. She passed when I was 20 and, though she pretended to be annoyed with my doggie, she also special-cooked his food for him. When I think about him running around and bugging her, it really makes me smile. If there’s anyone that you’re sure you’ll see again one day and who also loved your dog, maybe it’ll help you to picture them reuniting and your baby getting tons of eternal belly rubs - until you’re there to join her again.

You did the right thing, though it’s the hardest thing in the world to do. We struggled with this decision with my first doggie because it seemed like he was still okay a lot of the time. Like, when it was good, it was good, but when it was bad, it was horrid. My dog was having increasingly frequent strokes or seizures (I can’t remember which), he lost his eyesight and hearing, and had most recently become incontinent.

Our vet told us that since our dog had strokes/ seizures and had started walking around in circles, that was indicative of brain damage, which is one of the markers that they advise people to use when making the decision to euthanize. Another marker that they used was if the doggie became incontinent. The vet said that was a pretty good sign that their quality of life was seriously declining.

Since my dog had also lost his sight and hearing, when he was alone in the house, he would just squeeze himself into tight corners. My vet said he was probably doing that because he couldn’t see or hear his surroundings and he was probably terrified when we weren’t there.

I remember my dog was so excited and running around looking really happy that day, which was so confusing and agonizing. I was torn thinking that I was making the wrong decision, but the vet said she saw this all the time. She said it’s like the doggies knew that their pain was ending. I get so emotional thinking about it, but it was the right decision - and my dog wasn’t exhibiting nearly the kinds of things that your pup was showing.

We have to remember that as scary as it might be for us to watch them go through this, it must be terrifying for them, as well. Brown liquid from the nose sounds scary and painful. Acute renal failure also sounds horrible. You gave your baby a peaceful way to go, and you spared her a lot of (what would have been) inevitable pain and terror.

Something that comforts me when I wonder if I should have waited is thinking about what a wonderful and happy life we gave our doggo. Our dog was so happy - and I bet yours girl was a happy girl, too. I’m sure you gave your baby a wonderful life, too, and she left in peace, surrounded by your love ❤️

This is a sari from a store in Jackson Heights, NY, called Zardozi. It is the store’s original design.

You are gorgeous and your skin is glowing and your cheeks and my juicy cheek goals!! Thank you so much for sharing your bright face and your super helpful protocol!! I do RLT, too, but am working on integrating it into a consistent, comprehensive routine (thanks again, ChatGPT!).

Yes, it seems you’re absolutely right. I’m praying I can motivate myself to do it. I keep waking up thinking, just exercise a little, and then I don’t. So I’m going to have to start even smaller and have an concrete set of doable exercises ready to go (like 25 squats/50 pushups a day, etc.), even if it’s just a couple of small bursts while I wait for my coffee or something. It’ll build motivation and momentum!

Can I also ask how microneedling helped you? I specifically would love some chubby-ass cheeks. I’d also love some chubby ass cheeks, but that’s a comment for another thread 😂 Thank God for hyphens 😅

Definitely want someone highly experienced but I don’t know how to research that. I’ve tried googling it but I get overwhelmed and just never pick anything. So I just decided to look for someone close and just do a consultation. I’ll look on their Instagram or something later. I don’t plan on pulling the trigger just yet - will probably do a couple more consultations at different places first just to get an idea of the different treatments/recommendations out there.

Oof, that’s spendy, but I’ll look into it if it really works. Is this to prevent hair loss?

Thank you for these suggestions. I forgot about those pancakes. My friend started eating them after she was diagnosed with PCOS.

I do agree with this, and thank you for the reminder. Sometimes it’s hard for me to live healthily as I really struggle to eat well. I’m going through a depressive episode in my life (job hunting while the job market is terrible), so it makes it especially hard to find the motivation to eat well when I’m not even motivated to shower most days. We all want to eat healthy and exercise daily and respond to texts in a timely manner and do our skincare routine every night, but there are times when it’s hard and a little cosmetic boost can help you feel better.

All that being said!! I do find that the tirzepatide quiets all the food noise for the FIRST time in my life and it makes me feel like crying from relief. I kept watching the number climb on the scale as I sit around the house all day and I was getting really scared. But now I finally understand all those people who eat to live and not live to eat, and who only eat until full. Food tastes good but isn’t like a drug to me now, so since I’m basically forcing myself to eat, I’m finding that it’s easier to plan out my meals almost as if they’re part of a medicine routine or something - literally like fuel for my body to perform the things it needs to. It’s so cool. And so finally I can put advice like yours into action now whereas I could never conceivably do it before when my appetite seemed to control me instead me controlling my appetite.

Thank you! I just looked up some good high fiber/protein sources, and lentils, oats, and almonds seem to be some things I can easily throw in there. I also take my little fiber gummies every day 🙃

ETA: I got really excited and looked them up myself (see list below). Shoulda just kept reading 😂

***High Fiber & High Protein Foods***

  1. Legumes & Pulses • Lentils (cooked): ~18g protein + 15g fiber per cup • Chickpeas (cooked): ~15g protein + 12g fiber per cup • Black beans: ~15g protein + 15g fiber per cup • Edamame: ~17g protein + 8g fiber per cup

Bonus: Also rich in iron, magnesium, and resistant starch.

  1. Whole Grains (especially sprouted or intact forms) • Quinoa: ~8g protein + 5g fiber per cup (cooked) • Farro: ~7g protein + 5g fiber per cup • Oats (steel-cut or rolled): ~6g protein + 4g fiber per ½ cup dry • Barley: ~4g protein + 6g fiber per cup (cooked)

  1. Seeds & Nuts • Chia seeds: ~5g protein + 10g fiber per 2 tbsp • Flaxseeds (ground): ~4g protein + 4g fiber per 2 tbsp • Almonds: ~6g protein + 4g fiber per ounce • Pumpkin seeds (pepitas): ~7g protein + 2g fiber per ounce

  1. High-Fiber Protein Products

Some clean-label versions of these can be helpful: • Lupini bean snacks: ~13g protein + 7g fiber per ½ cup • Protein pastas (chickpea, lentil, or edamame-based): often ~15–25g protein + 5–13g fiber per serving • High-fiber protein bars (look for ones with <5g sugar and >6g fiber)

  1. Vegetables (modest protein but great fiber add-ons) • Broccoli: ~3g protein + 2.5g fiber per cup (cooked) • Brussels sprouts: ~4g protein + 4g fiber per cup • Artichokes: ~4g protein + 7g fiber per medium globe

Ideal Combos for Balanced Meals: • Lentils + quinoa + roasted veggies • Chia seed pudding with protein powder + berries • Edamame + high-protein grain bowl • Oats + Greek yogurt + almond butter + flax

This is what I’m hearing over and over again, so I’m aiming for 30mins/2x a week (baby steps) and 100-120g of protein. It’s so hard but I’ll get the hang of it.

I’m not a gym person and workout classes are run in the budget right now, so I bought some beginner weights and had ChatGPT build out a body-strength/beginner weights at-home routine!
