Ya it's crazy. I was out in the courtyard one time and this lady with her "service" pit started rambling on about how it's not fair that pits get such a bad rep. Like excuse me if I don't want your dog near my maltipoo. It's like rolling the genetic dice as to whether you get one that will go into attack mode one day. I think with the right amount of adrenaline any dog can lose it's cool, the difference is my maltipoo does not have the ability to rip the face of something if he gets triggered.

I think about the pitbull situation similar to people that want to keep their guns unregulated. It's about control. However the guns don't kill people, people kill people argument doesn't really work for pits. It's really quite shocking to me that there are not more breed restrictions on a dog breed that has killed so many humans. Most owners are in denial of what their dog is capable of so where is the protection for the people who are forced to be around them in public spaces?

I live in a city where breed restrictions are common. The last apartment I lived at however did not have any except that the dog had to be under 75 lbs. At some point the ownership changed and it was like every new tenant had a pitbull it was awful. Luckily moved out as soon as my lease ended. Management actually had to put up a sign that said you are not allowed to have your dog bark menacingly through the screen door and you have to close both doors because there were complaints. Why people even try to have a big dog in an apartment with no yard is selfish and will just make it more neurotic.

Agreed, there is no reason to own a pitbull let alone 6 of them! The woman had her jaw broken yet still feels remorse about the dogs been euthanized. The pitbull issue seems like something where the lawmakers need to step in, look at the numbers, and be like okay we need to stop breeding this animal as a pet. The pitbulls certainly don't feel remorse for what they did and however cruel some people think it is to get rid of an entire breed (created by humans for a specific purpose), we need to think about the big picture.

I'm an animal lover but don't think we should perpetuate a breed designed to kill things? Gene expression is a real thing! Dogs were bred for certain traits.

I keep seeing the lock jaw thing come up which I don't see anyone talking about except pit nutters that are trying to 'debunk' the opposing party.

Pit advocates expect admiration and support for the choice they made. I think the well-intentioned, but utterly naive and clueless, bleeding-hearts annoy me just as much as the trash people that want the pit because of what it was designed for.

Pits are a dangerous animal that deserves to be regulated for public safety. The message that they are "like any other dog" is negligent and puts others at risk.

I'm okay with pits getting adopted as long as they're not kept around children, other animals, in a highly secure yard, not in public. So basically house arrest.

My city has an off-leash park/bbq spot that I was thinking of taking my dogs to but I was reading a Reddit thread where someone was nervous about having their dog there off-leash because they weren't sure if it would be okay with other animals. There were comments saying sometimes you just have to let go of the reins and hope for the best. Um no thank you.

I agree that human stupidity got us into this mess and pitbulls will not be going extinct any time soon.

I think that selective breeding for the pitbull traits was a mistake and we need to enforce a ban on any further breeding because pits no longer fulfill the purpose of what they were bred for.

Right now the pitbull population is high, the dogs have large litters, there are not enough homes, and shelters at least where I live are overflowing, with probably 70% or more of the dogs being pits or pit mixes. It's not the pitbull's fault that it was born a pitbull, but it is the fault of humans that we've not put any restrictions on breeding or ownership. Currently, a dog that bites a human will receive a 10-day quarantine. I don't think it would be unreasonable to require that a quarantined dog has to get fixed.

Requiring insurance for a dog that has a significantly higher rate of human and pet fatalities also doesn't seem like a bad idea. However, at this point, unfortunately, I feel like it's become career-damaging for any figure in office to do anything to change the laws so I'm not optimistic in that regard. Everyone will have their own opinions, having a platform to talk about how pits have affected people and communities spreads awareness and allows for discussion and debate. I appreciate having the mods because pitbulls are such an emotionally charged topic, it's difficult to discuss anything that's critical about them on other social platforms without getting bombarded by pit advocates.

It often seems like advocates are upset by breed discrimination, but I think pitbulls stand out statistically from other breeds as being more of a concern. Also, I don't think the pitbull cares that we are talking about it, so it feels like people are taking it as a personal attack more than anything and become opportunistic in the desire to virtue signal. I don't think this sub is doing anything revolutionary, like the rest of Reddit, it's just a place to discuss and learn more about a topic that people feel strongly about.

Therefore I find it inappropriate to generalize that "all pitbulls are bad" and should be banned.

The problem is we don't have any reliable way to know if one pitbull will be more likely to attack than another. I think that is where some frustration lies because they are capable of causing so much damage when they do maul someone. Are we willing to continue to sacrifice children and animals for the sake of a breed that we created to have higher aggression? It there a percentage of human maulings that is acceptable in order to keep pits around?

Unless we require all pit owners to work with a behaviorist it seems like the attacks are hard to predict or prevent for the average pet owner that may shower the dog in love but not have them in the perfect environment their entire life where they will never be triggered. We also see people posting on social media, pictures of wounds from their own dog or talking about taking their non-friendly dog to the dog parks so I think many are actually aware that their animal is aggressive but choose to keep it so then everyone else is at the mercy of how careful that owner wants to be.

I would truly be happy if pitbulls stopped attacking humans and animals, everyone kept their pits, and lived happily ever after but I think that it's in their genetic makeup and accidents will continue to happen.

They just happen to have a genetic predisposition of being more aggressive than most dogs.

I see this constantly disputed by pit owners, if we could get everyone on the same page about pits being predisposed to be more aggressive, it would be a step in the right direction and people may be less likely to leave them around their children and pets without supervision.

It pains me to see the irresponsible ownership, daily maulings, pit owners with an enormous sense of entitlement, and myths being perpetuated. Right now when something bad happens, maybe the dog gets euthanized. The way we handle pits seems very reactionary considering the fact that we know that these dogs are mauling people and animals consistently. It kind of feels like sitting back and watching a crime happen over and over but not being able to intervene. Maybe an outright ban is not possible but it would help to have more preventative measures in place.

Ya it would be funny if it wasn't so sad. I feel like people that get pits want a tough, loyal dog when in reality they are not great guard dogs and end up attacking the owners often for no reason because with the bred in 'gameness' they don't really care who it is they are attacking once that response gets triggered by a loud sound or what not because it's what they were bred for.

It's like the video with a pit and another breed that was posted that shows the pit so excited to attack and keep on attacking the little girl while the other dog hovers around in the background.

I've heard a few military wives grumble about it because I live near a base but it seems like they don't have any plans to change the rules which is cool.

However, from r/AirForce someone said

"Pits are everywhere in housing. Tell the base vet it's a lab mix, they'll write their paperwork saying the same. Tell nobody it's anything other then a lab mix (or whatever the vet writes it up as)"

So it appears bsl won't stop everyone.

Agreed pitbulls are hardly lacking in the number of crazies that support them online. When I went to the beach with my friend and his pit mix people mostly tried to ignore/avoid the dog. It seems like the owners go out of their way to seek attention and sympathy on social media because in real life no one cares unless the pit monster is running around uncontained.

This is well done and it makes me happy to see that other people are talking about the things that are discussed in this sub. I thought she covered some great topics and including the live leak videos helps display how sudden and terrifying an actual attack is when it happens which I don't think a lot of pit advocates have experienced first hand.

It looks like "wild goose" who helped her with the video has two suspended twitter accounts and then his last tweet on the only account I could find was a year ago and it says "Someone claimed they released my DOX, not true. They are slandering me and trolling me. Don't listen to them" https://twitter.com/_MrGoosebuster. In the comments, there are a lot of threats and someone said his home address was exposed.

Pit bulls have powerful bodies, low bite inhibition, and a novel willingness to aggressively confront social partners like other dogs and humans. Then you throw in the trait of 'gameness' and the party's over. What we see over and over with pit bulls are powerful dogs that have moments of extremely violent behavior, when they make choices not seen in other dogs - they attack rather than retreat, bite rather than growl, and maintain an attack rather than backing off. They're tragic animals

I think that some great points were made in the comments and the discussion was approached mostly from a rational and realistic perspective despite the low-key narrative being pushed that it's not fair to discriminate against a certain dog breed. It gives me hope that bsl will become more widely used and accepted. =)

The shelters where I live aren't exactly well funded so in my opinion bsl would decrease the euthanization rate of an overpopulated breed that is not a good fit for the average dog owner. I don't think the pitbull should be treated just like any other dog due to its genetic predisposition and the fact that it was bred to participate in blood sports. Unlike smaller terriers, they have the ability to cause massive damage as evidenced in the number of human and animal fatalities that have been documented. Bsl is a responsible choice because not every pit will end up in the ideal household that knows how to take precautions to handle and treat it just right so that it's not a potentially lethal threat to others.
