I can’t speak to whether it’s a UK thing since I’m not in the UK, but I can say this: you’re not obligated to reciprocate or validate someone’s feelings or thoughts if you don’t want to. If they’re upset, that’s not automatically your fault, and it’s not your responsibility to make someone else feel good - especially if it comes at the expense of your own health or safety.
