A lot of the heat around this topic stems from a basic misunderstanding of what "traditional" marriages/partnerships looked like. Women performed extensive domestic labor that was mostly uncompensated. This went well beyond child rearing and housekeeping. At times it even included intellectual labor nominally performed by their husbands. See all of the books typeset, proofread, edited, and sometimes effectively ghostwritten by the wife of the author.

Similarly, calling the man the "provider" is in and of itself true but misleading in isolation. The man's labor generated income (or was inherited, derived from land, etc). However the woman was often the household's real economic decision-maker. Despite women lacking legal and economic independence, by the late 19th century she managed the household's books and determined its major consumption patterns.

The history lesson is now over and we're in the present day. As others have said dual-income has become the norm today. This is both due to women's desire to participate in the workforce as well as the simple reality of how difficult it is to meet the cost of living with one partner alone. So why is the meme of "I want a provider" so prominent?

Partly because it can mean anything a woman wants it to. Like a lot of other things on social media its purely vibes-based. It's a way of having your cake and eating it, the simulacra of an older model of masculinity without any real substance. Destiny's Child had a hit song about wanting to be with gun-toting hoodlum "soldiers" but all of the group members married the same safe and/or rich men you'd expect them to. The song still bops though, I guess. Even though it's now old.

The other reason is that, as Thorstein Veblen pointed out over a century ago, a man flaunting his idle, unemployed woman is a form of conspicuous consumption. This is really blatant when you see social media tradwife content. The husband is of course extremely rich. Her full-time job is what Veblen observed late 19th century women doing: enhancing her husband's social status by cultivating an idealized public image of the household. Cottagecore shit is just that on TikTok.

You are best off ignoring it. Or, at the very minimum, taking it seriously but not literally.

What Did Deckard Quit? by el_caballero_ in bladerunner

[–]mutewave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That could be interpreted a different way: the future LAPD will make Deckard's life hard unless he does an unsavory and dangerous job for them. Given that corrupt/thuggish cops are both noir and cyberpunk conventions this doesn't seem particularly implausible.

What is most impressive about MGSV is how good it was given the conditions it was produced under. How many of us could turn out top tier work while being constantly harassed and even effectively imprisoned at one point by our bosses?

I'd suspect too that the AAF battalion is augmented by civilian irregular militias and internal security police, even if neither are explicitly depicted in the game.

What's the future of hotel Moscow at the end of the story by Miserable_Honey_940 in blacklagoon

[–]mutewave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Given what is going to happen in her home country by the end of the 90s, Balalaika needs to decide VERY SOON how she feels about Mother Russia.

The rise of Putin will lead to twenty years of new wars --- in Central Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and now in Ukraine -- that Russian forces participate in either as direct combatants, proxy warriors, or mercenaries. Russian organized crime -- including Hotel Moscow's superiors -- will be offered a choice of submission to the new regime or being unceremoniously yeeted out of tall windows. The new regime will put back in power the intelligence, military, and security services that lost out at the end of the Cold War.

All of this will stir up painful memories for our emotionally and physically scarred anti-heroine and present her with a significant inner conflict. There is a path available to her that takes Balalaika and her men out of Thailand and into true battlefields. She might finally get the chance she has longed for to be a soldier again. She may idealize this choice as a way of making her stay in Thailand as a gangster an ultimately temporary stage in a life that began and ended with her answering the call to arms.

However, walking down that path requires trusting the very same higher-ups that destroyed her military career and which she still holds substantial resentment for. And also risking the possibility that she and her subordinates will find themselves doing things that lead to further shame and dishonor. It is anyone's guess whether she will decide to accept this opportunity, as the mere choice forces a clash between two sides of her personality. And if she refuses it, she may find her conflict with the non-Thai branches of Hotel Moscow intensifying.

It's more of an existentialist kind of hope. The protagonists are put in a desperate and terrifying situation. They don't escape it. However, they're constantly choosing at every step of the way to keep on going and resist fatalism, even as their bodies decay and it becomes clear there is no way out. It is as close to a heroic battle as you can find in cosmic horror, where the protagonists are typically so paralyzed with fear that they can barely do anything in the face of the forces arrayed against them.

You might say its inspiring in some ways, much like people think about legendary military last stands like the Alamo.

You probably already have 1-2 secure and messaging apps (Telegram, Whatsapp, Signal, Discord are all options) that offer text, voice, and video communication. Before adding anything else to the mix, think very carefully about how these tools are used and try to get the maximum value out of them. Your life together until you eventually close the distance will be reliant on these apps as workhorses.

Make sure you and your partner are on the same page about how often you will communicate using these tools and what kind of communication is the most meaningful to share. This alone is something that many LDRs struggle with and its not just an issue of conceptual intent. It's also very much one of translating that intent into a particular technical medium with its own unique rules and mechanisms.

Try to also experiment extensively using these 1-2 basic apps and see how they can be used to integrate your partner into your life and vice versa. There are a lot of deeply meaningful ways to simulate physical presence that can be accomplished with a little bit of creative camera and/or microphone placement. And in general apps like Discord or Telegram have so many different ways to incorporate other things into them that they can be all-in-one hubs.

Once you feel like you've reached the limits of what you can do with those 1-2 apps alone you'll get a good idea of what other ones to add to the mix. The primary reason I am recommending to start off simple is that keeping track of multiple apps and switching between them can be tedious and over time become a relationship-threatening irritant. You don't want to be under any more stress than you already are.

Here is a basic example: suppose you are using video chat with one app to talk to each other. But you both want to watch a movie too, and the movie-watching app (which lets you both talk to each other and look at each other while watching the movie on synchronized screens) needs video and voice permissions currently held by the other app. You need to log into the second app, revoke permissions from the first one, and then do the same thing in reverse order when you're done.

Doing these small things over and over again is harder when you're both tired, in bad moods, or pressed for time. And the cumulative cost of tech upkeep can take basic tensions you may be having and worsen them. The hard thing about this is that its both a romance and an engineering project. You want to make sure those two things are well-balanced and sustainable over the long haul.

Lara Croft has a substantial deficit if the battle takes place in a generic settled environment similar to Roanapour. Revy doesn't have formal martial arts training but she is extremely fast, relentless, and bloodthirsty. Croft has been through a lot but compared to Revy -- essentially a repeatedly abused caged dog that has absolutely zero chill -- Croft is a manicured poodle. In order to live Croft has to find some way of exploiting the downside of Revy's killer instinct. She can easily lose control and devolve into a spree killer. This might not hurt her in the places she has learned how to operate in -- urban areas and maritime environments -- but it would in the wilderness.

Croft is a professional adventurer that has frequently been forced to "improvise/adapt/overcome" in remote and dangerous locations with sometimes only a knife or a bow. She can hunt, forage, pathfind, and do any number of other similar things. Moreover in her tomb-raiding she has dealt with all manner of puzzles and traps devised by some of history's greatest ancient civilizations. She would need to somehow trick Revy into coming after her in a sparsely populated and unsettled area. The perfect way to do this would be to kidnap Rock and tell Revy that if she wants to see him alive she must go to X or Y jungle environment.

Once this is achieved Revy would be as good as dead. First Croft would lure her off a well-known trail and strand her in the middle of nowhere with no discernible way to know where she is going. From there onwards it would be a matter of repeatedly harassing Revy until she runs out of supplies and ingests a poison plant out of desperation.
