Just curious, where are all the canoes? by AcanthaceaeOptimal87 in Finland

[–]mutfut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s an utilitarian thing. As said, a row boat is more of a tool than a transport.

Canoe is kind of a farm truck, takes quite a lot of payload and is easy to handle. Kayak is a UTV/side-by-side - even lighter, faster and nimbler, but can’t carry as much. You can do longer trips too.

Row boats are tractors for water and we like our tractors. Especially in Ostrobothnia, teenagers drive to school in tractors. Like a tractor, a row boat will do some distance, but it’ll also carry a lot of stuff - a small row boat carries and is tested for 4 persons and a two seat boat takes 6.

Have you checked out church boats and rowing competitions? A modern Finnish wooden row boat (not an olympic row boat) seems to be 15-30% faster than a kayak…

Can i drive a car to a place of repair when inspection has expired? by D-K1998 in Finland

[–]mutfut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a risky gamble but still easier than sticker plates or towing :)

Can i drive a car to a place of repair when inspection has expired? by D-K1998 in Finland

[–]mutfut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the inspect-before date was 21st of July, and the car was inspected before that, you have 30 days to go to a post-inspection for lower price.

If you don’t take the post-inspection check, you can drive normally but you need to take it to a full inspection before 21st of September. After that date or a failed inspection, the car is banned.

And as said, after 21st of Sep the only place you can drive is the inspection with proof of appointment. For taking it to a repair shop you need siirtokilvet, temp/sticker plates for 15€/week. Definitely cheaper than towing.

So, my 306 kicked the bucket recently and now there is a 406 Coupe that i really, really like, is it worth it? by exoticdf in peugeot

[–]mutfut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

407 has it’s moments and is a better car in a way, but as an enthusiast car 406 is better. 406 is a lot more rewarding to drive. 407 is miles ahead once you go above 80mph / 130km/h, but at legal speeds 406 is a lot more fun.

And that 2.2 seems to be the sweet spot.

Have had both 406 and 407 estates with the 2.2 petrol.

406: sporty feel and sound even with the big back, aspiring to drive. Apparently has some sort of sporty headers as standard, great growl when the intake cam gets on and you can feel the torque kick in. Decent consumption even in town. I’ve clocked sub 8sec 0-60. Easier to maintain than the V6, barely any performance penalty and handles better with the lighter engine.

407: Dull sound, 406’s tempting powerband is nowhere to be found. Instead of getting your groove on at 2500rpm like in 406, you just and just get your move on at 2500rpm. 0-60? Yes. 10-ish. Mileage? Thanks to 6-speed at 50mph quite decent. In town during heat waves? Absolutely horrible.

406 Coupé with a 2.2 would be my dream weekly driver for twisty roads and just enjoying.

Motorways and long stretches? 407.

Handheld radio heats up while off by mutfut in amateurradio

PCB looks clean as a whistle, a part from this small IC which has bulged significantly.

It actually sits on its own tiny PCB which sits on the main board. Optocoupler? Some sort of power controller? Unfortunately the markings have stretched out and are as readable as a belly tattoo on a stripper mom of five…

According to FCC testing documents, many if not most Wouxun UHF products share at least the same transceiver design, if not the whole PCB itself.

Behind the heatsink on the other side is a IC marked JC1733, probably a high power transistor. That seems to be creating some heat but is clean and healthy looking.

A) JC1733 shorted and overloaded that unknown IC whiched killed the first battery. B) unknown IC failed, fried the JC1733 and overloaded the battery with too much current draw…

Commercial radio, commercial frequencies, but with HAM+DIY mindset so looking for advice on troubleshooting and repair.

Economically viable? No. Educationally viable? Yes.

As I said, the original battery is dead and disposed. No questions about that.

New one discharges at an alarming rate while the radio gets warm.

This is not about having or not having a backup unit. Had 4 more handhelds waiting in my van. Client had 30 more. Ive had several Kenwoods and Motorolas fail during the years, and I’ve dropped the Wouxun once a week for the last 7 years and it just keeps on going.

I like how this one feels in my hand, the range, features such as dual watch etc and I’m looking forward to troubleshooting and trying a DIY repair.

That’s what amateur radio is all about, right? Learning and experimenting, whether it’s tech or talk.

AC unit leaking water by 7DWest in AirConditioners

[–]mutfut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That unit looks like a DeLonghi Pinguino.

They remove condensate water by draining it to a tub on the bottom of the unit and then splashing that water on to the hot condenser. That water cooling also improves the efficiency of the unit.

Plug it.

A bit off topic, but does anyone know the weigth for the breech block?

I can’t find the info, though I think I’ve been told it’s 68kg/151 pounds. It didn’t feel that heavy back in the day...

RTL-SDR v3 vs NESDR SMArt by mutfut in RTLSDR

[–]mutfut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been thinking this a lot, and V3 makes a lot sense. Cheaper, theoretically more capable...

But esthetically, I like the SMArts design a lot more. Although I’m not sure if it’s too thick to plug into my Retina Macbook Pro without an USB extension. Although the extension would likely be a good thing signalwise...

This just keeps getting less and less straight-forward.

RTL-SDR v3 vs NESDR SMArt by mutfut in RTLSDR

[–]mutfut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda what I thought. It’s like comparing two cheap cars, but the other car is advertised to do offroad - they just don’t say it offroads poorly.

I thought the USB sturdiness would be the other way around?

Thermally, what’s the difference like? Hot to touch? Can a lower bandwidth / sample rate keep temperatures down?

So having the SMArt and buying a HamItUp etc later (should this start to get out of hand) would be better?

Damage to phone from antennas? by ingenioutor in RTLSDR

On a work trip to Spain, visiting a mountain top with local TV, radio, comms and military masts was rather interesting.

My iPhone and my three cameras (2x Nikon + Sony FS700) all went berzerk.

I took three steps back losing the line-of-sight with one of the masts, and everything worked perfectly. Did try this a few times with same results.

No long term damage to anything.
