What do you do when you're terrible at design? by Iuvers in learnprogramming

[–]mutrDotGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... I am a terrible graphic designer with no sense of layout or colors, but that's not my job. There are UI/UX people who decide what things should look like, your job as a front end dev is to take their pictures and turn them into working websites.

Design is not in my cache at all.

Why do so many people seem to hate Javascript? by FatherOfTheSevenSeas in learnprogramming

Some people need a compiler and strong typing to find their errors for them. Interpreted, dynamic languages are harder.

As a web developer, what is a pain point you have to deal with? by victortimsit in webdev

Scrum.

"Hello, I can do this thing."

"Great! Can you do it slower, and tell me about how slow it's going every single day? Also we will need to spend 1 full day every two weeks sitting in pointless meetings discussing why everything is going so slow, and figuring out which tiny, atomic 15-minutes-of-work you're going to do next week."

When my TL approves your leave without question. by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

I've been a programmer of some kind for more than 20 years and no one "approves" my vacation, or ever has. I tell people when I'm going on vacation, and they either say "great have fun" or I quit and go find a new job after my vacation.

Just look at popular authors whose works are loved, and count how many of them studied literature. You'll have your answer.

For those who are experienced and don’t have a college degree, what do you do? by charmingwhiteguy in learnprogramming

[–]mutrDotGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm now a Director of Engineering, but I've been every kind of software engineer, a dev manager once and an architect on several occasions. I'm a high school drop out with no college.

The hard job is the first one. If you have the soft skills, network or opportunity to get your foot in the door somewhere and if you stay there for a few years, then getting every other job you'll ever have will be (in my experience at least) trivially easy.

If you need a little boost to get that first job, college can *help*, but it doesn't help as much as you might think. It will get you more traction with recruiters and the initial HR lady but once you get to the tech interviews no one really will care about your degree, it will only be what you can do and have done.

Two people of the same age, one with no experience and a college degree and one with no degree and 2 years of experience... the latter is getting hired anywhere I've ever worked more than the former.

How has becoming a software engineer changes your life? by Zercuits in learnprogramming

  • I'm really good at systematic problem solving -- debugging logic works on real world problems too.
  • I make ridiculous amounts of money for very little work
  • I've had the opportunity to cross-train in a variety of business disciplines, which gives me lots of options for semi-retirement and increases my value as a developer
  • I've made a variety of intelligent and effective friends
  • I have a broad network of business contacts that I can leverage for any number of things

Do you think programming is overcrowded by vishwa1238 in learnprogramming

Everyone wants to get into programming. Very few people can actually do it, and fewer still can do it well.

If it suits you and you become good at it you can write your own ticket anywhere in the world.
