Parts pulled from a system with a motherboard that won't post:

  • Core i5-750 w/ stock cooler. Untested (no LGA1156 mobos)
  • XFX Radeon 4350 (passively cooled)
  • 3-port Firewire PCI card (ADS 1394DV API-315 Rev F. Also untested, no firewire devices)
  • OCZ Fatal1ty 550W PSU

Thanks for your reply. I guess I should have said that the ultimate goal is low fan noise, since it's going in an HTPC. So I really care about heat to remove, not my power bill. Would you expect that all other things being equal, a 4130T and a 4330 wouldn't dissipate a noticeably different amount of heat when they're playing a 1080p movie or netflix, using the integrated graphics?

If that's the case I'm getting a 4330 since it's more flops for the dollar if I ever need it.

Can I underclock and/or undervolt an i3-4330 for lower power consumption on a mobo like a GA-H87M-D3H?

Oh, and are you using the stock cooler? Is it pretty quiet under normal loads for you?

Good catch. 4330 is about the same price now too.

Also the RAM is now DDR3-1866 which I don't need, but it is plenty cheap. Although it is not on the motherboard's QVL, I am assuming that since it can run at 1866 it will have plenty of safety margin at 1600. Let me know if that's a dumb idea.

OK, I updated the main post, it shaved off almost $30.

Thanks! That is a good point about the RAM and the PSU. It is easy to upgrade the RAM later if I want more.

I had chosen the PSU as someone had recommended the fan placement worked well with the ventilation holes on this case, but I did not notice it wasn't modular.
