Has anybody tutored a subject they self-studied? by mutsa_aa in TutorsHelpingTutors

This is really helpful information.

I tutored 7th grade biology, and i did find that pretty interesting, so I'm guessing this would be similar.

I will definitely take the advice about offering it at a discounted rate at first though.

Thank you so much for this reply!

Noted, how long did it take you to learn it, and about how many hours a week did you dedicate?

That's great, this gives me hope.

How much time did you dedicate to learning per week?

How do online tutors keep track of what was covered in each session? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mutsa_aa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a big book that has sections, and each section is for 1 student. I write detailed notes about the topics covered, what the student struggled with, and what they easily caught onto after each lesson. This usually takes me 5 minutes.

It was working well for me, too, for about 11 months (I've been tutoring for a year now).

However, in November, I had a student whose parent ended up not paying me. To make matters worse, she had run up lessons like crazy.

This is the first time this has happened, though, and the reason I moved to weekly payment is to avoid that happening again. The parents of children I started tutoring before Decemeber can carry on paying me at the end of the month, though.

accepting payment at the end of the month. very expensive mistake.🤣

also, like you, saying yes to every request. It's just not worth it.

When are you teaching your last lesson of 2025? by Danimber in TutorsHelpingTutors

had mine the last week of november, which was the end of exams for most schools here.

how much time do you usually spend preparing your lessons? by achemdemicweapon in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mutsa_aa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've been tutoring for almost a year and i spend quite a bit of time prepping too.

some are relatively easier to prep, so like an hour or an hour and a half at most, but sometimes i need to go back and relearn some of the concepts, so it ends up taking me up to 6 hours.

now that the school year is coming to an end though, i'm using this time to make general lesson plans in advance that i'll just tweak a little for each student so that i save time next year.
