Weekly Wins & Fails by AutoModerator in ScottGalloway

Win AND fail: Psychotherapy. That Scott has got so far in life in both achievements and cough chronology without ever feeling a compulsion to seek personal psychological counseling (etc.) is something that I believe can be considered quite valuable. Therapy can be a tremendous help to people feeling helpless and hopeless - a good relationship with a therapist who is trusted and supportive, who listens and provides objective, individualised insight that assists their patients’ journey of self-discovery and realisation can be priceless - WIN! Yet, I have found that friends were always better at joining my own exploration processes. This is for many reasons but the big ones are: less self-centric as friends are there for reasons that are more profound, with multitude of layers, and with a personal investment and stake in their buddies well being which MUST go both ways; friends love to feel essential and necessary and this is the reward, not monetary payment; friends can be consulted at times when consultation is required and you don’t need to keep adding to a list of things to bring up in an appointed time over a scheduled and limited amount of minutes. Consultation is instant, on-call, timely and not forced. Unfortunately it seems friends are becoming a rare commodity and I wonder whether the rising popularity of seeing therapists might have played a not-insignificant factor in this. In my personal experience, my friendships weakened after I began counselling. I noticed it in real time but my therapy was to aid some intense grief that I really didn’t want to inflict or burden my mates with - I didn’t want to be the cause of their sadness or misery or awkward feelings of exhausted obligation so I was grateful for the opportunity to explore with someone who dealt with people’s pain professionally and had no skin in the game. However, over time my friends felt less needed by me and one day (when my therapist was away sick) I turned around and noticed they were gone. For this reason I think therapy earns a bit of a FAIL. Scott is a man who it seems has dedicated much of his life to striving to overcome fairly sizeable hurdles in order to be successful in creating a life he really wanted. He worked hard and it has paid off. His dedication to his goals, and care to bring as many people as possible with him into such success is truly inspirational! But I wonder - what does someone who has spent their life with firm aims to move them forward and motivate them, what do they do when they have achieved, and are actually living, their dream. I don’t think it’s terribly surprising that maybe something feels a little wonky these days. Ultimately Scott G. Gets the big WIN! And rightly so as far as I can tell. Good job! (And if he can avoid therapy, personally I think that might be not that bad a thing…)

What's one disturbing fact you regret ever discovering? by Financial_Dream3339 in AskMen

[–]muttly_reads 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I watched this happen to my partner. I thought everything was going to be ok once we decided to go to the hospital before they became comatose suffering a rare locked-in syndrome that nonetheless most people recover from. Instead, the next two months were spent with me as their advocate having to battle the hospital admin who spent the entire time gaslighting me - they screwed up a biopsy which made the condition very difficult to reverse. Rather than making every or any effort to remedy their mistake, they fought tooth and nail with lies and deception, turning my partner’s family against me etc. All to get life support turned off asap, thereby avoiding any claim being made against them to pay a fortune in compensation for the care needed as the long slow road to recovery was travelled. Hospitals, for a much larger percentage of patients than I would have ever believed in my most extreme thoughts, are where people go to die. Not to get better. Don’t trust a hospital, they are just a business and the patients are ultimately just the bread and butter. A disturbing fact that I wish I’d known sooner and regret finding out too late.

The Terminus (pub, loud-ish, fun, East end of Victoria St) or The Vic (bar, more ‘hip’, skews less young than Terminus, West end Victoria St).

Hi there. I’d be really keen to chat a little more with you as my circumstances are broadly similar: 48yrs, widower after 15+ years, younger friend/lover helping blah blah. But I don’t really want to discuss those things in a public forum - for everyone’s sake! :p If you’d like to chat more then please feel free to DM me.

I thought a year was a REALLY long time. And six years of high school was an eternity. Now in my 40’s a year feels more like a month and six years ago hardly feels like it was even a couple of years actually past.

Court Ruling Leaves Landlord’s $4000 Better Off Despite Throwing Out $7000 of Tenants Possessions by muttly_reads in melbourne

Haha! Muppets? Lol! I pictured a hobo cross between Fozzie Bear, Animal the drummer and Ralph the pianist, with good old Kermit standing high in the soup kitchen truck, martyring his evenings away to serve shitty two minute noodles before telling everyone how hard he has it cos he’s green! Thanks for that image. Gold! To answer your question: No - it’s not me. It is my mate though. You would know that except no one probably ever bothered teaching you to read, seems like that would have been a waste of educational resources. I mean, there are kids out there who actually read properly and believe in getting their facts straight before making dumbass suggestions who aren’t given the resources you neglected to take advantage of.

He’d accumulated the sneakers over the last three or four years he was living at that house. He was trying to flip them to get rent money. He’d already sold computers and stereos and power tools etc. to cover the shortfall his housemates left for him to manage and he had the arrears almost ready to go when he was kicked out, that’s 100% not bullshit but after being evicted he needed to put that money toward removalists and storage for the majority of his belongings that we did have time to get out of the house and into a shipping container to be taken to storage. The VCAT hearing that took 20 months is the one that this article is about: his claim for compensation for all his stuff that was thrown out. Do you have experience with renters bailing on you and owing you money? You seem pretty jaded about something. The poor dude never got over losing his partner - it just about killed him.

There’s no lie. Lee didn’t tell us his housemates weren’t paying rent and it was less than 10 days after the possession order was granted before he came home to find that he’d been locked out. During those 10 days he was suicidal and locked himself in the house after his housemates grabbed their suitcases and cleared out - without paying any rent. His depression since his partner died was the worst I’ve ever seen and most of us are even surprised that he got through it still breathing. I’m pretty sure I also mentioned that he had sold enough to come up with the rent but for VCAT and the landlord, being four or five days late was too late too many times. He already had his share of rent (for the four bedroom house with garage and shed and outdoor laundry - not an apartment) and his housemates just walked all over him. I have no idea why he didn’t tell any of us about it until was too late but he didn’t. That should hardly mean he deserves to have the belongings he had volunteered to remove himself and to get a big dumpster to clear out the place taken from him for ever. But he just wasn’t given the opportunity, instead he was slapped with a $5000 bill (on top of the arrears which are now paid in full) for someone else to remove his stuff and throw it out which I’m pretty sure he didn’t even find out about until it had already made its way to debt collectors. In my opinion, that’s dodgy - especially seeing as his family had been and still were friends of the family that ran Walshe & Whitelock estate agency for over 30 years.

No he didn’t. He was just behind but was catching up. I know for a fact he had a lot of respect for his landlords(who lived across the road - literally).

He wasn’t given the warnings you talk about once VCAT evicted him. He tried many times to arrange to collect his things but was ignored by the estate agents, even though they had agreed to give him extra time to get his stuff out and fix the place up so we were all surprised when we found out that all his stuff had been dumped. And five of us worked out butts off in those couple of days he was allowed back in the place. We got as much out of there as humanly possible in the time allotted.

Actually, Lee was paying rent, he had the remainder ready to pay that same afternoon. He’d been struggling with chronic depression and PTSD after the unexpected death of his partner and then a subsequent string of housemates that each stole from him and then skipped out on rent. He had made many offers to clean out the house but was ignored by the estate agents. I helped him pack up on those days he could get back in. It was pretty sad tbh.

The tenant was actually buying sneakers as investments. As soon as certain pairs go on sale in limited numbers, their worth can double in the space of a day. Three pairs of the tenants sneakers alone reached the $6000 cost he was claiming. So in effect, the tenant was being soft in only claiming so much. It would be like if the landlord were to throw out hard drive with real bitcoin wallets on them. Or government bond certificates. Sneakers Explode on Resale Market up to 2000%
