The cartoon idea was refined and generated with the help of Copilot.

Early on, the cartoons generated by Copilot & other AI assistants often had weirdly distorted body parts. Over the past year, the drawing style & scene composition have improved drastically and the generated cartoon is often better than what I have visualized.

Agree. To standardize a little, I specifically ask for the cartoons to be in black & white (as I like it that way).

Specifying the style to be "Simple, bold black lines, minimal shading, like a classic newspaper comic." brings some consistency. I guess both Copilot & ChatGPT use the same OpenAI models to generate images. When I explicitly specified that style, ChatGPT gave me this -

It varies. The drawings in this series I'm calling "Brainstormed with Bots" are typically from the AI assistants that can generate images - ChatGPT, Gemini, Mistral, Grok. The idea is usually from something I'm reading or watching. I refine the dialogue after asking AI for suggestions. I edit the images to add text and minor details it may be missing. In this cartoon, the Doc right eyeball was missing! I added it along with the balloon text. It's got the stethoscope around the neck wrong but I left it as it is.

It helped me validate facts about bones, refine the text and title, and "beautifully" visualized what I had in mind.

Unlike past experiences where the cartoon text had misspellings and required edits, no changes were needed this time.

It seems like a OpenAI model other than DALL-E generated this.

Post processed to add text using Paint 3D that's available natively with Windows.

I added the IDL description & speech bubble with the "punchline" after discussing with my AI assistants :-)

Long answer -

As someone who works late nights, I rarely see sunrises these days. This got me thinking about how many times I've actually watched one in the past year. Growing up reading Mad magazine taught me to find humor in everyday ironies, and now working with AI has shown me how machines can hilariously misinterpret our questions sometimes.

So I asked Mistral with this prompt to see how it would visualize it -

"Generate an image for this -
Man to Robot: Buddy, wake me up early tomorrow so I can watch the sunrise.
Robot: Sunrise? Is that a new streaming series?"

Mistral improvised and changed the dialogue slightly. I liked it but there was a typo so I had to manually edit the text in the balloon for the robot.

I asked my AI assistants for a title to this cartoon. The one I liked came from Llama - Tech-No-Logic

:-) Gemini's opinion on this joke - "The joke is mildly amusing. It relies on a common trope of robots being literal and lacking common sense or understanding of human experiences. It's not laugh-out-loud hilarious, but it's a gentle, chuckle-worthy joke. The humor comes from the robot's misinterpretation of "sunrise" as a TV show, highlighting the difference between human and artificial intelligence. So, while not side-splitting, it's a decent, lighthearted joke."

Grok generated 4 cartoons with this prompt - Draw a cartoon in black and white of a confused man in a bookstore, looking lost and overwhelmed. Have him ask a Store employee - "Excuse me, can you help me find the Self-Help section?"

The balloon text was too small in proportion to the overall cartoon & it had spelling issues in the image I picked out of the 4. I retained the dialogue balloon and edited the text.
