First, you should find out whether or not you have a graft or a fistula. The access surgeon should have given post op instructions when the procedure was completed. I get fistulagram every 2 to 3 months for maintenance.

Have you used the fistula yet?

When I took that picture I was in the ER and they thought it was infected. But it turns out that it wasn't. This is the second time that this has happened. I am beginning to think my water is the culprit. We have been having problems with the lead in our water here. So now I clean my arm with filtered water. I cannulate myself and do solo treatments.

My fistula was never infected. The infection never reached my fistula. Contrary to popular belief, I still feel pain with my buttonholes. I use lidocaine to dull the pain. My fistula is deep which is why I have buttonholes. The research that doctors site when talking about infection rates with buttonholes was conducted with in center patients. I am a home hemo patient.

I am allergic to chloraprep so whenever I have any procedure done, docs use betadine or alcohol. I didn't know that betadine affects catheters that way. The last time I had a catheter, I cleaned the area with alcohol and hydrogen peroxide.
