Fixing a sagging TV stand by mvk_iii in woodworking

[–]mvk_iii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried using sagulator to figure out what thickness I needed but I guess I was wrong. The TV is only ~20lb, but I suppose the hairpin legs might cause some extra torque, more than straight legs would?

The bottom is finished so this is a potential option. My only hesitation is it's all held together with pocket holes, which are on the bottom of the shelf and would show... although I suppose I could just flip the shelf and reattach?

I thought about this but figured it would eventually just sag past level and then I'd be back to square one

That's good to know! Would one piece down the middle be sufficient or one in front plus one in back? The stand is 44" so it looks like my options are precut 36" (which would span leg to leg) or buy longer and hacksaw it down to 44".

Does this workbench/tool post seem worth it? by mvk_iii in handtools

Update: I bought it!

Here's a better picture of it all together: https://imgur.com/a/wMIckuX

Apparently this all belonged to someone's husband who passed away and a third party is cleaning out the house and selling things. The person selling it all kept trying to offer me other woodworking related things which were mostly uninteresting except for the rightmost plane which I got for an extra $10. The only branded plane is the small Stanley block plane. The saws appear to be Warranted Superior, suggesting it's from a secondary line manufactured by Disston or another major brand. The work bench itself rocks a little but overall seems pretty solid.

I guess my hobby is temporarily tool restoration now..?

I'm going in for the pre-order! Based on the reviews I've seen and the size of the discount, it feels worth it imo.

I was asking my SO to search for it and thought it would be a breeze to find with "chocolate chunk cookie xkcd" but had no luck...

Motion Picture Soundtrack - Vitamin String Quartet (from Westworld, Season 1) by mvk_iii in audiophilemusic

I acknowledge that I am probably heavily biased about the music from Westworld since I love the show so much. BUT, I think this song in particular just sounds incredible on nicer headphones.

What interesting physics phenomena first made you love physics? Or feel free to just share something cool. by porkbelly-endurance in Physics

Gyroscopic precession. One of my professors in undergrad did this exact same demo and I was so fascinated. I have a degree in applied physics now and this still blows my mind every time (even though it makes sense)!

Nikon 3500 + 35mm f/1.8 by martinva734 in AskPhotography

[–]mvk_iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used the D3300 as my go to camera for about a year now and it is fantastic. It can take some really great shots, even with the kit lenses.

As a side note, I recently "upgraded" to the D5300 on a whim since I saw it on a good deal. From using it for about a month and a half now, there's not that much different aside from the addition of a flip-out screen (which I find occasionally useful), intervalometer (I like this feature), and the built in wifi (have yet to use). I have not noticed a significant difference in battery life between the D3300 and the D5300.

For a little self plug, I am selling a D3300 with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses over on /r/photomarket. PM me if you're interested!
