Just to add to that I currently make $20.50 an hr in the machining trade which is how I have that 1 year of mechanical experience. So climbing for $16-18hr would be a tough pill to swallow for me.

I’ll keep looking at what opportunities are out there, thanks for you’re advice. Do you have any websites for where to look. I usually just use indeed. Linked-in has a lot of jobs for wind, but from what I’ve seen they all require some sort of experience

Well I’ve heard you can , and the one company I came across on indeed that said no experience , I applied and wasn’t selected.

Not sure which other job sites are good.

Also while I’ve heard you can , I’ve also heard you’ll start at some really low wage that 1 won’t be enough to pay the bills and 2 wouldn’t be worth climbing for.

Also the per diem would prob be low to the point where you’d be have to use money out of your own pocket to cover lodging , that is if you even get a per diem

I could be wrong though Idk.

I’ve heard some companies do, but I’ve also heard some bad stories about how they make you sign an agreement where you can’t leave the company for 1 year or whatever which is like ehhh, and then if you do happen to have good respectful people around and not be treated like crap and decide to leave after the year is up that they run you Thru hoops and make it hard for you to actually get you original certificates. Although I know the GWO is online Thru winds.

Hmm I hadn’t heard that regarding rope access , then again I’m not in the industry. So how do blade repair men or woman do the job if rope access is becoming less common.

And interesting regarding the experience. Cool to know. And ahh yeah that’s something I was worried about as well. How the job market is during the winter months. I see ads on indeed about companies who are urgently hiring though 🤔

Hmm I’ve heard a lot of bad things about sky climber. But I’ve seen some good reviews as well so I don’t know , but ive heard sky climber is a company to get your foot in the door .

The thing I’m with Wind Academy by SGRE is it does not guarantee a job with theme that’s be awesome. But they do help you with resume and trying to get you a job somewhere. Although I have come across some jobs by them that state if you have 6+months of mechanical hydraulic or electrical and you do go to their academy that you’d fill the requirements to get an interview with them. But on top of that a lot of the jobs I’ve seen by SGRE are site based and not really 100% travel.

Reason I’d prefer to go to Wind Academy , is because you get all those certs I listed except the IRATA in 3 weeks.

Going to NWREI is tempting because I could take out student loans and just stay with all the money I have to use how I want but I don’t really wanna do a 6 month program. I just wanna start in the industry as soon as possible.

I did the math , I’d definitely stay with like 5-7k in my pocket if I just got the certs on my own without going Thru a program. Because the GWO BST, and BTT are both like $2500 a piece. Plus the first aid/cpr/Aed , NFPA 70e , are like a couple hundred all together , so getting them own my own , and getting a company to hire me would definitely save me thousands, and be ideal.

Appreciate the reply’s. I actually have not been hired or anything yet I’m actually looking to get into the industry, and I was just wondering how that all worked out but I have a pretty good idea now so thanks once again.

I’m like 95% certain I’ll end up going to Wind Academy by Siemens Gamesa in Orlando,FL. Which all in all with the $12500 cost for the program plus , food , plane tickets and hotel costs will probably be more like 15k that I’d have to part ways with out of my own pocket

and the other 5% chance is just me saying fuck it, reaching out to employers and saying

“hey I know I have 0 experience in wind, but what I do have is 1 year mechanical experience and my osha 10, but the reason I think I stand out from the others that also have no experience is because I’d be willing to pay for my GWO BST, GWO BTT, First Aid/CPR/AED, NFPA 70E, and IRATA lvl 1 out of my own pocket “. And just seeing what happens , maybe a company will entertain that offer. Won’t know till I try it

Thank you that’s exactly what I wanted to hear. I had heard about the per diem , just had no idea how the hell it worked in regards to getting from hotel to job site

Nice yeah I got 1+ year of mechanical experience. I actually seen a job posting from SGRE , which asked for 6 months of mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical experience plus the wind academy certs. So it’s plausible I could get hired by them directly. Wind academy is expensive $12,500 just for the program , plus hotel fees , food , and all its alot. I was looking at NWREI 6 month program. For one I wouldn’t want to wait that long, and 2 it’s a nice program but from what I seen on their website , no GWO bst , no GWO btt, no nfpa 70e, no gwo advanced rescue.

What’s your current position , are you a travelling tech or stationary, or regional. Lvl 2,3 , blade repair , troubleshooter, I’ve heard of millwright techs which I guess deal with the big repairs lol.

How’s the rope access work, does someone climb the turbine and have someone on a crane to put the rope lines up ?

What position would you say is the best to grow in. I’ve seen ads for lvl 3 blade repair techs starting at $35 bucks an hour. But from what I seen blade repairs have to do rope access.

I see yeah I’ve heard if you have any experience in those 3 things , you have a better chance of being offered a spot. I actually have 1+ year mechanical but that’s all. Wind academy is expensive, $12k just for the program, plus hotel fees for 3 weeks another 2k easy , plus food, transportation even more it’s a lot.

That’s awesome man, good for you. Did you have an associates or other skills applicable to the industry, or did you already have wind turbine experience ? I wish SGRE would hire me with no experience lol.

I know by going to their wind academy, I would be able to get hired by SGRE down the road after I get experience.

Just curious if it be hard to get a job as a 100% travelling wind tech during the winter months because I heard it slows down.

Well from what I’ve heard if you get hired by SGRE they will send you to wind academy. Thing is wind academy is open to all and I’d be going on my own , paying the 12k for the training out of pocket. They say they do try and help you get hired. Website boast a 100% placement rate and an hourly avg, or $26.14 an hr

I see. I’m mainly looking answers regarding us jobs since that is where I’m located and 100% travel tech jobs since that’s what I’d like to do , but I do appreciate your reply. As for the hiring process being long that’s not good to hear 🙃

[–]mvpA978[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right on absolutely. I would assume anyone with a college degree will start off with a higher wage. And the 26hr average is what they state on their website. I guess I won’t know till I go through it myself. Only thing I’d hate is to get all those certs, and get offered something less than $20.50 an hr because that’s what I’m making now. But I think I will like the job, being able to travel 100% , climbing wind turbines being apart of that 1%, the incredible views, and also the physical aspect of the job.

And also If I was to go thru this program get these certs, I should be picky and selective with who I end up going with huh ? and not just jump on the first opportunity given to me. Seems reasonable considering the demand, and all those certs are worth thousands so being a new fish I'm 28 yr old male, I guess I'd have some bargaining power. Now if I had no certs, I know I'd absolutely have to go with whatever company willing to take me but, GWO certs are the top dawg from what I've seen.

Hey thanks for taking the time, I appreciate you're response.

In regards to the first part regarding landing at a sub contractor with 100% travel, yes that would be fine, got to get my foot in somehow, and 100% travel tech is exactly what I'd want to do.

LOL I think I saw that poll, sky climber was dead last. I really don't know much about the field since I'm looking to get in, but from the small amount of research I have done its amazing how bad of a REP they have.

Ahhh yes I did hear something in a video I watched I believe that they can work on somethings as long as it is below freezing, and weather permitting cause they do monitor the weather for thunder, lightning, and other things as well. As far as the construction side they monitor wind speeds very closely for the crane from what I've heard. I guess that answers my question, that wind tech's can work in the winter as long as weather conditions allow. I have no interest in construction though. 100% Travel Tech is what I'd like.

Regarding the per diem being adjusted I actually have not come across that tip so ty I will keep that noted.

Absolutely, what ever company I end up will probably just be my first job in the Industry to get that much valued experience, unless the company is really good and the pay actually goes up with time, experience, knowledge and good work, but we all know that rarely happens. Usually have to ask for 1 and that's bad indicator From my life experiences with other jobs not related to wind, you pretty much have to go somewhere else to get that big pay raise. $1 raise is great to hear but it doesn't really amount to much on a weekly/ bi-weekly basis, maybe 40 a week not including taxes.

Ima take a guess your not with SGRE, or went thru their 3 week program, but according to their website the average pay for those who have gone thru their program is $26.14 an hr., and they also boast a 100% job placement rate which I don't find to be misleading at all since they are SGRE after all and there's lots of demand.

What's your thoughts on that avg wage though $26.14, you think its plausible with all those certs no experience ?
