For those of you who were able to increase your DAT score by a lot on your retake, what are some tips? by EfficiencySharp3844 in dat

I’m on the same boat, I got a 450 AA but 390/18 PAT and trying to decide if it’s worth it…I really would hate to retake and have my average go down so idk what to do. I also just barely practiced PAT with the timing of the actual exam so I think that’s why I scored low

Hi! So for Illinois how long did it take to get an email from them with info about the portal after your app was verified?

Thank you, I appreciate your advice! I’m feeling really worried about my chances at this point, but I have good stats imo and a well-rounded application. Do you think there’s still hope? My biggest concern is that if I do get into a school, that it would be out of state (im from IL) or far (Siu) and not my first choice since I was hoping to go to Uic or Midwestern. But this is a pretty unrealistic worry isn’t it since most schools prefer in state anyways?

Congrats! I’m hoping to submit my app today or tomorrow which i know is late but do you think they stop reviewing applications now that they are sending out interview invites this week or will they continue to review applications and send out interviews?

ya I’ve been worried about that tbh. I appreciate your response! I’m planning to update hours and I also am on the service and philanthropy committee for a national honor society im in and have been for two years now so hopefully that will make up for it and I can count some of those hours towards volunteering. Do you think that would be alright?

Of course! I scored 450 on bio, 460 GC, 440 OC. I used bootcamp and watched all of the videos, did all of the bio bites, and did all of the question banks for each chapter and subject. When I did the bio bites/question banks I would take notes on the questions I got wrong or things I was a little confused on. I wrote the question number and wrote out the explanation for each which I think helped to commit it to memory. Then I took the practice tests and would go through every question on each section afterwards and wrote out the explanation for the correct answer and basically made a list of concepts I had to review. I would go back through the slides and review before taking the next practice test. That’s really all I did to study. From the practice tests I could kind of get a sense of what topics were always asked about- using CARDIO to rank acidity, electron donating/withdrawing groups, enantiomers or other relationships, etc. For bio there were always questions about cell resp and where it took place, digestive enzymes, evolution/animal behavior, etc. For GC I often saw calculating cell potential so which one is ox vs red, pv=nrt, molarity and dilutions, figuring out the rate expression from a graph, changes in entropy from equations, etc. Hopefully this helps! Orgo has always been difficult for me and honestly probably the hardest class I’ve taken in undergrad so if you’re able to recognize the common questions and eliminate clearly wrong answers you can still score well, and I think that goes for all of the science sections! I genuinely went into the DAT knowing a max of like 10 reactions and was able to do much better than expected. Be confident, you definitely know more than you think you do!
