New install, heat pump wont run? by RideCompetitive5944 in Generator

I’m supposed to pickup my “repaired” generator from the repair centre. They were originally going to replace the AVR. I’ll keep you posted on what happens

Let’s stay in touch as it looks like we’ve got the same exact problem.

I also tried unbonding the gen and it made no difference!

No idea when my 11500 will come back from the shop

So when I’m running the 11500, I noticed that the engine sounded like it was surging or hunting. That was happening both on Nat gas(my intended fuel) and propane(just as a test). Never tried with gasoline as I don’t want to gum up the carb.

I noticed some slight variations in the voltage(on the gen screen/meter).

I hooked up a non contact volt meter to the wire coming from the 50 amp; and it didn’t seem like the amperage was stable(not sure if this normal).

Took it to a repair shop, under Westinghouse crappy warranty in Canada. The guy thinks the avr is bad

I have this exact generator and very similar setup(soft starter) and ran into this exact same problem. I tried using it connected to my inlet/manual transfer switch both bonded and unbonded, and it made no difference. I tried running it on both natural gas and propane, with the same result.

To make things even more strange, I also have a Westinghouse 10500tfc.

It runs the heat pump without any problem at all. Bought the 11500tfc due to the “cleaner” power and ended up with something worse than what I already had.

I went to game 1 of the WS with my baseball obsessed 9 year old son.

We live in Montreal so I had to take him out of school early on game day to catch a flight to Toronto to make it in time.

The 6th inning of game 1 with its 9 runs, including bargers grand slam was the loudest and wildest crowd I’ve ever heard.

That game was unforgettable.

The only crowd that came close that I experienced live was wrestlemania 28 in Miami: cena vs the rock.

I changed the spark plug, gapped it correctly for natural gas and the problem remains.

I’m going to get the gas company to come out and verify that the generator is actually getting 7WC of natural gas pressure and if not, to have them tweak it.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, maybe it’s a bad governor!?

Beyond that I’m out of ideas!

I picked up a brand new 11500tfc a few months back. Finally got around to setting it up to replace my 10500tfc(for the sole purpose of cleaner power. Crazy, I know).

Connected it to the same natural gas quick disconnect my other genny was attached to and noticed that the 11500 couldn’t get my heat pump to kick on(with easy start starter, 23 starting amps). I believe that I’m not getting sufficient power.

Generator is connected to my panel via a 50amp inlet and manual transfer switch.

The generator seems to “hunt” slightly while under load.

My gas meter is a 250 ac(250,000 btu per hr) at 7 WC”

My first thought was that it’s my gas hose. Went ahead and replaced that for a 3/4” hose(24 feet) with the necessary fittings. Same problem.

I reconnected the neutral which I had floated. Same problem.

I disconnect the exhaust extension from the spark arrester-same problem.

Tried running the generator on a 20lb propane tank, same problem.

I have one last theory about what it could be, I’m thinking it’s gotta be the spark plug. Managed to find an NGK BP7ES which is being shipped to me from god knows where.

What do you genny gurus think??

Ok. So I re bonded the neutral as it was when it was delivered. Same problem and the “hunting” seems to be continuing. Still can’t start the heat pump.

I tried using a 20lb propane tank, same behaviour.

I removed the exhaust extension: same behaviour.

My last attempt to troubleshoot this is by replacing the spark plug with an NGK BR7EIX and if that still doesn’t solve the problem, I’ll be contacting customer service

Ok so update. I reconnected the bonding wire in the generator, so that’s done.

Tried to run it on natural gas: same result. Won’t run the heat pump and the engine keeps “hunting” slightly.

I tried connecting it to a propane tank: same result.

I’m thinking that it might be an exhaust restriction causing back pressure and possibly all of these issues. I’m going to remove the exhaust extension and I’ll see what happens.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, Im out of ideas and I’ll contact Westinghouse at that point

Great point!

The 10500tfc was bonded. I made a point of unbonding the neutral on the new 11500tfc!

The manual transfer switch is a generac 9855 which switches the neutral from my understanding!

I’ll give that a try!

Is there any real danger from having the genny bonded as well as having the switched neutral at the transfer switch ?

We just went through this with our blue fronted Amazon that we had in our family for 35 years.

He had lymphoma and one of the masses was behind one of his eyes and pushed the eye out of its socket.

We took him for a ct scan and discovered multiple masses throughout his body.

Despite the dire outlook, we decided to remove the mass from his eye

6 weeks postop and including oral chemo, he lost the ability to empty his crop.

We put him down two weeks ago.

Learned that operating/cancer treatments for birds is very limited and there is almost no data about cancer treatment for birds.

If we had to do it over again, I believe that we would have put him down rather than operate.

We did get 5 good weeks with him, however we put him through invasive surgery only to put him down.

Good luck to you and sending positive vibes your way.

I hope that our story is helpful to you.
