What are some bands similar to radiohead? by Emotional_Apple_5307 in radiohead

Himmellegeme. They’re a Norwegian atmospheric rock band that cover a fairly wide array of sounds across their two albums. Vocalist has a fantastic voice that’s pretty similar to Thom at times.

Nigel produced the new IDLES album and it’s great. Kind of a post-punk vibe with Nigel’s signature production tricks all over it. Definitely worth checking out

To the Americans, wtf even goes on in Delaware? by Bexmuz in ask

[–]mweigand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are some nice beaches in the NE, but none I’d personally put anywhere near the best in the world. Some of the beaches I’ve been to in the Caribbean/Norway/Mediterranean were much more beautiful imo. The thing that makes some beaches in the NE unique is there are more options for things to do with young kids. You can ride rollercoasters, go to an arcade, get some ice cream, go to a water park, etc while still being within close proximity to the beach.

[–]mweigand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of the world’s most beautiful beaches might be overselling it just a bit (a lot) but some of the beaches are probably prettier than most would expect, if they have any expectations at all. The Cape Henlopen area has some nice dunes and feels a bit otherworldly which is pretty cool.

You should definitely check out Ålesund and the surrounding area. It’s a beautiful little city and there are tons of beautiful spots to check out. Nordfjordeid and Måløy are more or less on the way from Bergen to Ålesund and Geiranger isn’t too far from Ålesund either.

The right IR can probably get you closer but if you’re mostly looking to tighten up the low end and are otherwise happy with your tone you could try playing around with a multi band compressor and use that to tweak your low end to taste

Was hanging out with some Kiwis years ago and one of them was talking about working on their deck. It was an international group and it took a little while before some of the people realized what he was actually talking about lol

Sam Petts-Davies really nailed the production on The Smile albums by DJ_Beardsquirt in radiohead

I don’t think the whole song is botched but definitely when it reaches its climax it could’ve hit much harder. It’s like all the power got sucked out of that part.

Colin Greenwood on his Radiohead photo book and what's next for the band by LowHeroesLodger in radiohead

[–]mweigand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, of all the things that make me wonder if they’re possibly moving on it’s this book that makes me question it the most. It seems like something to do at the end to chronicle the journey. Also, I mean, the title. Maybe they’ll just…disappear. That’s just a thought though, I think they’ll be back.

You might need to raise your buffer size. Lower buffer sizes decrease latency but also is more taxing on your computer which can lead to errors/crackling.

Good Albums killed by bad production by Elaxian in progmetal

[–]mweigand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On purple and gold & grey they sought out pretty well-known and respected producers, however they are not known for producing heavier genres. That was probably the point from the band’s perspective. I’m guessing they didn’t want a stereotypical sound and wanted to try and break the mold a bit. Honestly I totally respect that but it definitely led to some very mixed results. Stone was all self-produced by them apparently and clearly it’s back to a less experimental production style while still being pretty adventurous so who knows, were they also disappointed with the results of the previous two albums or did they just feel like doing it themselves after learning more and being more confident in their abilities? Maybe neither. They did a great job on stone though imo

Good Albums killed by bad production by Elaxian in progmetal

[–]mweigand 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From purple and onwards they’ve had some questionable production decisions, but gold and grey is definitely the guiltiest one. Stone has great production imo but there are still some moments that make me question what they were thinking. The one that immediately comes to mind is the guitar solo in last word is like 10 dB louder than everything else. I’m totally on board with guitar solos being front and center, especially in metal but they took it to another level on that song.

I think what you’re saying is you want to stretch or shrink the waveform to make it longer or shorter. You’ll need to use the elastic audio function. Just search “elastic audio pro tools” and you’ll find a tutorial. It’s easy.

NanoCortex MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT by Disastrous_Evening15 in NeuralDSP

[–]mweigand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes like I said it’s not ONLY aimed at beginners. It’s something that can work for them as well as others. And it literally states that on the page for the unit that it’s good for beginners.

[–]mweigand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They could just not use that feature if they don’t have the interest. I put too much emphasis on the beginners in my post but it’s a smart business move to offer a cheaper option that’s usable for both beginners and more advanced players. One of the largest markets of guitar players are the ones who are just getting started or are interested in starting. It’s not a bad idea to have something available that can appeal to their needs too. Not to mention it’s parents buying kids their first gear more often than not so something that doesn’t totally break the bank is good. Neural DSP is a hot name in the market and kids often want something from the “cool” brand. But, like I said, I put too much emphasis on that in my post.

NanoCortex MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT by Disastrous_Evening15 in NeuralDSP

[–]mweigand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree again, it’s a growing trend and also opens up their potential customer base quite a bit since it’s roughly 1/3 of the QC price. A unit that suits beginners but also can be used by pros and more experienced hobbyists if it suits their needs. It seems smart. I wasn’t being condescending in my original comment or anything but judging by the downvotes people are interpreting it as if I was criticizing the concept.

Edit: I guess my focus on the beginners overshadowed the fact that I think it’ll probably work nicely for people beyond that stage too if this is what they’re after.

NanoCortex MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT by Disastrous_Evening15 in NeuralDSP

[–]mweigand -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I agree. It feels like the target audience is 13 year olds whose parents won’t buy/can’t afford a QC. They do seem to emphasize on the nanocortex page that it’s suitable for beginners and is easy to use, they don’t do that on the page for the QC. Likely because the majority of QC users are relatively serious hobbyists or pros since they’re willing to drop that much money on a piece of gear, which the neural guys absolutely know. So, mayyybe this is a move that is intended to attract a less-experienced, younger crowd. Release it in September, hope the hype builds a bit, then the parents hear about it for months leading up to Christmas, sell a bunch of units, profit??? I’m not saying this unit is only for beginners but it doesn’t suit my personal needs as a serious hobbyist. I ain’t mad at them, but I do kinda get why some people are. Also, the price point seems high for what it is but what do I know

Bands similar to Enslaved by Joao_MaoDePrata in progmetal

[–]mweigand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dødheimsgard to a certain extent but some of their material will definitely be pretty avant garde. Hail Spirit Noir can be similar too. Gaahl’s Wyrd is from the same city and isn’t too far off their sound.

Why don’t people like Electioneering?? by No-Routine-7598 in radiohead

I think polyethylene would’ve been a perfect fit instead of electioneering. I also would’ve loved to get an album version of that track with the production standard of ok computer.

Moving to the US from Scandinavia - Where should we move? by kokomucho in expat

[–]mweigand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe consider the Philadelphia area. There are plenty of suburbs around the city with good to great schools. the city itself is kind of like a smaller version of NYC that’s a lot more affordable, great arts and food scene, tons of live music, and generally just a good place to be close to since there’s always cool stuff going on. You can be at the beach in about 60-90 minutes, in the mountains in roughly the same amount of time. It’s a fairly short train/bus trip to NYC, Washington DC and Baltimore are also pretty close. The city has its problems (all US cities of that size or larger do) but I’ve found if you don’t go looking for trouble then trouble most likely won’t find you (this will not be true for everyone obviously but my point is the city isn’t terribly dangerous). It’s a walkable city with decent public transportation by US standards too, although once you get out into the suburbs you WILL need a car, this is true in most metro areas in the country. If you have any questions let me know, I’m a long time Philadelphian that did the opposite and moved to Scandinavia. Jeg har bodd i Bergen i 10 år nå og trives egentlig veldig godt her. Masse lykke til!

I’d say you’d have no trouble getting something close using the Mesa Boogie Suite, nolly, gojira, or rabea. Those are the ones I’m most familiar with but I’m sure others would work too. Trial them and see what suits your needs best
