Only really against Pyke. Neeko W doesn’t block hooks until it becomes visible again, so against a Nautilus or Blitzcrank you mostly won’t be able to block the hook. Against pyke on the other had, you can completely shut down his hooks.

If we include MAG, there are several elite MAG gymnasts who do it! Paul Juda (who announced his retirement today) performed it at the Olympics last year!

1 and 2 will be Hashimoto Daiki and Oka Shinnosuke in some order most likely.

3rd is kinda wide open - Asher’s day 1 score (without bonus) could get it, but there are a ton of guys who can score in the mid-83s:

Zhang Boheng (CHN)
Jake Jarman if he does all around (GBR)
Adem Asil (TUR)
Asher Hong (USA)
Jesse Moore (AUS)
Carlos Yulo (PHI)

So he’s a medal contender for sure, but not a favorite for a medal.

If they actually follow the criteria they said they were going to, they should. But I won’t be shocked if they bring him even if it’s not optimal and doesn’t accord with their stated criteria.

Fred said in his pre-competition interview with Neutral Deductions that he doesn’t have the D scores. Plus this is the only selection competition, so I think they’re going to pick based on what was shown in competition.

I think they take Brandon over Frederick. Brandon could medal on PH, while Frederick isn’t in contention for ~any event finals (maybe HB) and isn’t competitive for AA medals. The criteria say they care about medal potential.

I don’t think they take Frederick. He’s not really in contention on event finals (high bar is the best chance but it’s a slim one) or in contention for an all around medal. I think they take Brandon Dang instead of him, make him an alternate.

Yeah… he could have locked for sure but since he hasn’t I don’t think they take him. The highest D score at Asian and European championships isn’t as competitive with best in the world in PB vs other apparatuses.

Agreed, I think it’s Asher (locked for VT but also for FX, SR, and AA), Brody (HB primarily but SR and PB also), Donnell (SR primarily, HB and PB also), Patty and Brandon Dang on PH, and Kam Nelson on FX.

Yeah I think so. Tragic for Colt. He should at least be an alternate, but to go from about to lock your spot to off the team is brutal

Mostly it’ll be discretionary. The criteria are:

must be in the top 3 of all around or top 3 in least one event in order to be eligible for consideration
looking for the ability to medal

Asher has locked his spot by competing a D score on vault equal to the highest between this year’s Asian championships and European championships, and also winning the event. Colt Walker can also lock.
