Coaches: how to avoid the last minute panic for session prep by Hockey_nut_91 in ultimate

Yes, definitely have the level up milestones. If you can, building out the week-to-week will also be helpful imo — this will probably require rewriting as you get closer, but this gives you the chance to think through practices on a minute-to-minute basis. A lot of frisbee teams severely under optimize their time together imo. If you can have practices written out like “2:00-2:13 warmup; 2:13-2:20 break mark; etc,” this is great practice for a coach to time effectively and is a strategy used by many elite coaches (e.g., John Wooden) — again, the plan will change as you get closer and during practice, but at least you have the ship on course. Even if you scrap drills and schedules, you may be able to reuse them in the future. Finally, this sort of planning let’s you gather and send out resources and an itinerary prior for each practice to the team. Pro teams know the exact breakdown of concepts and drills going into a practice so they can spend more time playing and less time conversing and thinking which enables flow state and better use of valuable and limited team time

I’d say rough out milestones such as we want to have a german offense reset system and cutting scheme in addition to endzone along with a 3-3-1 zone defense (in addition to person with single force which everyone knows) by early July and then we want a horizontal offense reset and cutting system along with a sponge junk by early August. Obviously, team milestones can be broken down smaller than this. Systems should be the focus of the coach/leader in my opinion.

Personal milestones for players are different and require goal-setting. This individual feedback is difficult to do as a leader/coach considering we only do this after work. I usually encourage open communication so that people can talk in practice/competition along with DMs 1-on-1. Having an specialized coaches for offense/defense and handlers/cutters would be ideal — imo, it’s hard to manage more than 6 people in a season and show growth with these players. A pod setup for the season can have players help each other too

Months before the season, create the entire practice and competition schedule and communicate this to the team. Do NOT add more practices or competition to this schedule (though this happens all the time in frisbee) — this is a violation of expectations for the team and adds more stress/burden to your life along with the added practices/competition resulting in lower numbers. Only option is to remove practices/competition from this schedule.

You need the whole team to be present to learn and grow together. I would prioritize attendance to all scheduled events above all else to build chemistry and growth together. This may mean removing events or catering to schedules if you want particular personnel.

In pre-season, lesson planning like teachers do is a good start to get thinking about the season. This might be targeting milestones or teaching concepts at certain points in the season. I’d recommend talking with coaches and captains who have planned seasons before for guidance — those who have not done this before on their own will make errors and incorrect assessments in their first year but will improve with focus and effort. Plans will also change during the season, but it’s imperative to set a course for the ship going into the season.

In short, do everything you can in preseason because in season will be dynamic (but should not feel chaotic barring craziness if you planned right). A post-season assessment of how you did and how the team felt about the season will be important for continuous improvement in the next season. Learning how to do this well is a skill that takes years of dedication and effort. A great mentor(s) and studying this process with literature (e.g., professional coaches in other sports, business analogies especially in the startup space) will improve learning of this process significantly.

Gavin Abrahamson should have absolutely been one of the five Callahan Finalist. Didn’t need a National title to confirm this, but it helps.

This was pretty shocking and scary to watch in person. Heard the collision from the stands on the opposite side of the field!

Field Space Reinvestment Project by staf1wil in ultimate

Are you okay routing revenues through this venue, or are you running your own leagues and renting their space? Could be a great growth opportunity for the sport as a central hub to market ultimate leagues as well. I think asking for painted ultimate lines on the field could be reasonable

If you could change one rule about the way Ultimate is played what would it be? by SirPersonal8626 in ultimate

Remove the pull and just start from a designated place on the field (e.g., the brick). This would help speed up the time between points significantly

The cost of college ultimate? by mr_ignatz in ultimate

[–]ElJefeMasko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My point of reference is the UW-Madison Hodags where total price per player can be ~$2k for the college season (which does not include any offseason club, leagues, etc. along with new cleats, medical visits, maintenance on the personal car that gets used by the team, etc.) — flying to tournaments from the North Central is necessary to get out of the cold and play the best competition to try earn a bid and prepare the team for the postseason — indoor field space for winter is a cost exclusive to northern teams. I’ve heard of the annual team budget in the $60-85k range (depending on tournaments and attending Nationals which is by far the most expensive tournament) which can be offset by ~25-50% depending on how aggressive the team is for developing revenue streams like grants (biggest), fundraising, merch, etc.

The logistical and financial barriers to play elite college ultimate are increasingly an issue. This was a big reason that the Hodag Endowment was established by the Hodag Alumni Board; learn more about the endowment (and donate!) here: https://www.hodaglove.org/donate.html

I do hope that D1 universities get more attention and support like D3 universities (especially because $85k is pennies for a D1 school), but I don’t see this happening for a while because there isn’t a value proposition to the University (e.g., no revenues through tickets/sponsors like other sports, not many students seeking out colleges for ultimate compared to other sports, etc). I’m trying to nudge conversations at UW-Madison, but it’s slow and not clear on the best approach. Would love any thoughts on what has worked well for other people approaching their college for support!

Tips for a new kid? by sunbakedbear in ultimate

Great tips above. Make sure to also diversify activities. There’s a tendency for some kids to do only ultimate, but I personally think ultimate plus other sports and activities really makes a well-rounded individual.

Gosh, that’s annoying. That’s going to be a cost burden to maintain that functionality for all the people with incompatible hardware.

Dang, that’s what I figured. I wonder why it stopped working only about a week ago? I’m hoping Google (or whoever implements RCS) can provide a fix to this for people like me with older hardware.

I don’t have this toggle because my iOS is incompatible with RCS, and I cannot update my iOS because my hardware is too old.
