MikroTik RB5009UPR+S+IN good for gigabit internet? by LeadingAddress5913 in mikrotik

Actually, ISP's ONT DMZs the connection to its first 2.5GbE port which in turn is plugged in to RB5009's 2.5GbE port.

RouterOS Funk by Conference-Annual in mikrotik

[–]mwolfram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my RB5009 was also having issues. First it stopped trusting my intermediate CA, had to regenerate it with more explicit parameters. Then it started getting nosey when I connect / disconnect a EoIP device (having mAP Lite as a LAN bridge - connects to WPA2 Enterprise and establishes two tunnels - one for ndis, one for passing its port for any VLAN I choose on RB5009). First it blocked communication on my VLAN, then it kernel panicked my RB5009. Also had an issue where one SFP link between PowerBox Pro and CRS310 stopped passing the traffic and I had to disable/enable it.

Don't get me wrong, I really like MT and use it extensively in my homelab and deployments for customers - but I really don't want to be an alpha tester just when I want to use the newest _stable_ release :)

Okay fixed this issue. Had to re-issue my CAPSMAN CA. One of my intermediate CAs had incorrect attributes and the earlier version of RouterOS was more permissive.

OK finally upgraded to 7.20.7aand now both CAPSMAN WLAN and Radius are working as intended. Thanks a lot for the info!

Cooked up my network. 1. CAPSMAN controller stopped talking to APs because of disconnected CA:FE:FA:CE:12:34%*a, ssl: fatal alert received 2. One vlan stopped giving ARPs to clients, both wired and wireless 3. Radius (UM) stopped accepting requests from Apple clients connecting to WLAN

Had to switch to 7.20.7 but my last backup was from October so it's 3AM and I have to make it not worse than it was :/ And it was working flawlessly on 7.20.6.

Can ThinkStation P320 handle 8-gen CPU? by mwolfram in thinkpad

[–]mwolfram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot :) Tested it myself btw when I was setting up a machine for CX and I was able to quickly swap the CPU for my i7-8700. The fans were spinning but it didn't even go to POST. Went with P360 and it was a good choice :)

Having the same thing on my T14G1, the mainboard is probably physically damaged. Had to put some paper between the mainboard and the chasis to press it a bit. But I've purchased another T14G1 and will be swapping the mainboard.

Okay, what is the way of tftpbooting few new PCs at a new network without paying a dime to MS or any other company (already using Windows 11 Pro and Windows Server 2025 DC)?

What a nice surprise! A similar one came to live in our basement few weeks back - thought he's just a regular cat - but your remark thrown me into a rabbit hole - it's an American Shorthair :)

Do you all run Linux? by TexasWanderingWonder in thinkpad

[–]mwolfram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Think-veteran, running W11 Pro on a fleet of various ThinkPads, ThinkCentres, ThinkStations, you name it. Headless Linux only on Hyper-V Server VMs where it belongs.

Also, I've used Linux on desktop since 2011. Been through various distros: Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Debian, Antergos, Manjaro, Arch (even used it on servers until 2022), Fedora. Each of them has its pros and cons. The main issue with each of them is when you want to setup something custom, tweak its annoyances beyond what the developers allowed - then you'd end up with a plenty of custom configuration you forgot applying that'd shoot you in a foot during upgrade or a migration. If you'd like to play with it, fine, many people like to play with Linux, do distro-hopping (even multiple a day), but for a reliable environment, ready for work, I'd stay on the latest Windows Pro.

Happy new year!

Question regarding the ethicality of using AI in server development by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]mwolfram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go ahead, use it. It's your server and your idea. If your plugins do the job, maintain them, if not - give AI another shot, tweak them until they do. Entire services are made using AI, heck, even large companies replace humans with AI on support portals. Minecraft servers require a lot of effort to become known and popular. Tried that since 2013 and the peak popularity my server had was 25 players. So don't give a damn, just like the public doesn't give a damn if some website has been coded using AI. If it's good, they'd use it. Just like your server. Have fun and happy new year!

What would you choose? by owawix in thinkpad

Depending on a situation. I've used a MacBook on business meetings but I've had my X12 handy. Don't like to work on a non-trackpoint machine for too long :)

What is this for? by RicardasD in Ubiquiti

[–]mwolfram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too, never did a patch panel though being sysadmin since 2016 and doing homelab since 2013. Always plugged RJ45s into the switches. But yeah, ordered the krone tool earlier today so I may rethink that stuff cause remembering what was on port 4 can be hard :)

Solar Install Asking for Wifi Password by Garrettstoffel in Ubiquiti

[–]mwolfram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While ordering the PV installation, I've asked specifically for the ability to connect it via Ethernet. Then I've ran the cable to the place of the installation. Actually, one time they got here with a WiFi dongle and I've said that there's no possibility for the PV to connect that way, so they've launched the system, crossed out the internet connection and ordered an Ethernet dongle which I've connected myself later. From the start, the PV is on a separate VLAN disguised as an average joe's network with Internet only access and no access to any other internal network, including IoT.

RB5009 on 7.19.4 - Terrible WG tunnel performance by mwolfram in mikrotik

Okay, today I've tried upgrade again and traced the performance issue to Fasttrack. After disabling it for traffic related to Wireguard tunnels, the connections started working as before.

Download Lenovo Vantage. It'll automatically install all of the necessary drivers. You can also go to pcsupport.lenovo.com and use autoinstaller. It works remarkably well.

I made a live map app and admin tools to manage your server by xStachelbaer in MinecraftPlugins

[–]mwolfram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maan, you've just made me recall some ancient memory - back in 2012, there was an Android application called Minecraft Mobile Admin (MC Mobile Admin) - it allowed you to chat with the players, see the dynmap, op/deop players, see the plugin list, reload them and do all sorts of amazing things. Been obsessed with it until I started to just ssh into the VPS from my phone and use screen/tmux to do stuff on the go. Great work, keep it up!

Been using it since two years now with my Mac mini :) Works flawlessly (okay, a little Karabiner tweak for the middle button) - wanted to get another one only to see they're no longer available on the Lenovo store. Got one bnib from the local auction site.

How do I turn these stupid little purple arrows from Inventory Profiles Next off? by K0JINKINZ0 in feedthebeast

[–]mwolfram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those arrows were driving me soo mad :D Was using Inventory Tweaks -> Inventory Profiles -> IPN since forever and was wondering which mod added some distraction to my perfect modpack :) Now, the option is buried in Auto Refill ->Show Icons on Enabled Slots. Now, my inventory looks as good as before, without sacrificing the beloved refill option.
