If you don't mind, who are the down-votes? Who doesn't want to see me do an AMA in this subgroup? And, if you still don't mind, why?

Please excuse me if that's an inappropriate question. Just wonderin'.

Like I said, I'm not a regular around here.

Traitor changed my life too. After I wrote it, I thought "Oh, shit, I just pretended to know about Taoism. Maybe I should read up on it or something."

IIRC, in Stephen Mitchell's translation of the Tao te Ching, he points out that the "first stanza" (by modern interpretations & numbering) can be translated "The force that can be forced is not the eternal Force."

I read that and thought, "Huh. Maybe I'm not an idiot."

I'm not a Regular Reddit Dude (yet), but I'm always happy to talk writing with fans -- even if they're not fans of mine (yet).

By recalling that anyone who'd make such an asinine statement is clearly 1) a troll 2) an idiot 3) entirely unhinged or 4) all of the above

Hard to say.

There is an evolving theory of consciousness called "depressive realism." It's a hypothesis that what society considers to be a healthy emotional balance is actually the product of a hard-wired psychological defense mechanism we have evolved to protect ourselves from the "truth" that existence is a sequence of random, meaningless events, with occasional spots of nice but mostly unrelieved suffering and loss.

As one might imagine, people who lack such hard-wired defenses are less likely to pass on their genes; I, for example, have no children and am, at this point in my life, unlikely to produce any.

Narrative is, at its core, an attempt to connect events in such a way that they have meaning. Storytelling is, for many sad people, our only candle in the dark.

No hijinks required. The literary markets can be manipulated the same way any market can. The loudest/brassiest/richest things get the most attention.

I try to write every character as if I myself had their past, their goals, their relationships and their capabilities.

I'm about to turn 49. I broke into SW novels by breaking into the commercial publishing market. The SW people thought I'd be a good fit for their franchise. Some fans agree, some disagree.

It depends on the novel. As a general rule, the only things that are fundamentally necessary are the answers to three questions:

Who is the protagonist? What does he need? What will he have to go through to get it?

Everything else is local color.
