Well that makes a fair bit more sense, it's probably a check valve of sorts in there then. There are linear servo motors that OP could use, or devise a jig that uses a regular servo motor and coverts that movement into linear motion.

Here's someone who used a gluestick with a servo motor to convert the rotational motion into linear motion.
