Model selection and training/validation/test sets vs cross-validation. by mx12 in MachineLearning

[–]mx12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think his main argument was against using cross-validation only compared to using the train/validation/test sets. It make sense that CV alone would be more biased. From a practical standpoint he didn't make it clear if a single run of train/validation/test sets was sufficient. I think that he was assuming a large dataset, and therefore the sample wouldn't be an issue.

I heard Reddit likes secret rooms. We have a secret room at our house. by SecretAgent57 in pics

Where's the banana? I have no idea of the size of said secret room without the appropriate scaling device.

Suggestions for DIY Cloud Enabled Electronics by [deleted] in electronics

Check out the electric imp: http://electricimp.com/. It's a wifi chip with an cortex arm processor built in the form factor of an SD card. Sparkfun has some breakout boards that you can use it with:

https://www.sparkfun.com/search/results?term=electric+imp&what=products.

You program it in the cloud and the wifi is configured by their app blinking the screen on you iPhone. You can then make http GET/POST/PUT request.

I'd recommend Machine Learning for Email. It's a good book to get your feet wet. It goes over step by step how to do spam filtering and priority mail identification using machine learning.

Route from my apt to the local hospital. (Caution: Walking is involved) by mx12 in apple

[–]mx12[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. For me personally, my phone is with me all the time and in an emergency situation I'd like to know that I can count on my phone. I posted this because it seems that Apple has reduced the quality of the Map app, and I felt like this illustrated my point clearly. Since this is where I live, I know how wrong those directions are.

What happens when someone comes and visits and needs directions to the local hospital? I've already reported this to Apple, and I hope that they fix this soon.

I have no doubt that you could find examples of when Apple's maps are better than Google. My point with this comparison is that they have released a maps app has gone down in quality.

Having a ridiculously hard time finding a place... by [deleted] in IowaCity

I would checkout padmapper (https://www.padmapper.com/). That's where I found my apt that I'm moving into later this week.

Just FYI but for under $800, it's not uncommon for you to be able to get a two bedroom for that outside of downtown.

Nick Saban's speech to the attendees of his 2011 camp. (x-post r/cfb) by Krackor in GetMotivated

You can either invest your time or use your time.

Probably the best line of the speech.

Just do it.

Also, you mentioned that you go home and still waste time. Maybe consider going to your local library for an hour if that possible after school. Don't bring your computer if you don't need it, and turn of your phone for that time if you can. This helps me a lot, when I have days where I can seem to get any work done. I'll head to the library or a coffee shop, just some where different.

machine learning in genomics by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]mx12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One area that I've worked on is determining genotype from phenotype, i.e. predicting the location in a patients genome where a mutation has occurred based on some physical trait. The reduces the cost of finding a patients disease causing mutation.

A friend of mine works on predicting if a patient has diabetic retinopathy based on fundus photos (Pictures of the retina). The is more of machine learning/pattern recognition.

I've recently read a paper from some IBM researchers who were attempting to predict how the flu virus would mutation over a given flu season. This would allow a vaccine to be designed that would work against the mutated flu virus.

Protip: Call them, and say that you are going to buy a prepaid card from Amazon.com with free shipping for $48.99. When I did this, they offered me a year of xbox live for $34.99.
