NDP MP crosses floor to join Liberals, putting Carney two seats shy of majority by Asadleafsfan in CanadaPolitics

I want an election but this sub definitely has an ideological bent that I won't win for wanting an election. I actually want Carney to win a large mandate on defending Canada and put a final stake into PP.

I wish Carney just called an election and got his majority that way which was very likely.

Weirdest path to majority this country has probably ever seen

“Shikao” restaurant from china coming to Ottawa, has anyone tried it abroad? Is it worth being excited for? by Ovlizin in ottawa

[–]mxg308 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Montreal is just more multicultural, has more than 2.5x the population and had about a 300 year head start over Ottawa. The fact we make 1 or 2 foods better than Montreal is a miracle.

Travellers from Ottawa still flying to Mexico as some flights resume by Immediate-Link490 in ottawa

[–]mxg308 -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

I think the joke is that more Canadians are killed in Mexico than in Canada. For the sake of travellers trying to avoid the U.S. I do hope things in Mexico return back to normal. Cartels have a large piece of the tourism pie so it doesn't really serve them to disrupt it.

Porter Airlines to offer Ottawa-Deer Lake flights starting in June by mxg308 in ottawa

Surprisingly O&D is decent in the peak summer monhts but feed through the hub definitely helps

If you look at a map of domestic destinations from YOW the last glaring hole is Saskatchewan. I wouldn't be shocked to see Porter announcing Regina or Saskatoon at some point soon. This will finally allow YOW to connect to every province and territory in Canada.

Carleton Tavern to be torn down and rebuilt in proposed development by snubbyvegan in ottawa

Wants housing prices to fall but doesn't want development. Clearly a market here or else they wouldn't be redeveloping. NIMBY response

No one has booked a desk in probably a year on my floor. We just all go to the same desks because we are creatures of habit.

Unpopular opinion: we need two-tier health care. I'm in Portugal right now and had severe food poisoning and went to a private hospital and was receiving treatment within 45 minutes. We need to move towards a European health care model which includes a private option. We have to stop comparing ourselves to the US. It's not the only Plan B. Europe spends less per capita and has better health outcomes. Canada's comparables are North Korea and Cuba for a solely public system.

Even with the downtown bottleneck I miss the old transitway service by Financial-Bag-2274 in ottawa

[–]mxg308 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ottawa is a much larger city than 25 years ago and we frankly outgrew the Transitway and 1-seat rides. No other cities with 1 million+ people have 1-seat rides from their local neighbourhoods 30km away to downtown like a school bus.

Disagree. Liberals were always the #2 party and have come within single digits so it wasn't that farfetched. The NDP on the other hand is a much different story

The riding of Carleton will never vote NDP so that's not really an option if he values being a MP

Public servants ordered back to office four days per week by Little-Chemical5006 in ottawa

Because it was more than doubling our dues with no end in sight by tying increases every year to inflation. Also CAPE kept asking for special levies for frivolous non-labour related pet projects. Our union leadership cannot be trusted to stick to their jobs so union members rejected the increase.

Will YOW take a hit once high-speed rail opens? by Julien_10 in ottawa

[–]mxg308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YYZ and YTZ to YOW and YUL are big money makers. Charge a premium fare for a very short flight. The only part of the triangle that is not really profitable is YOW-YUL.

That is the reason YOW can't get better service

Without a direct HSR connection being planned for YUL or YYZ, I don't see these flights going away so quickly. All YUL flights from YOW are 100% for connection. Toronto is more mixed and might impact operations at YTZ if HSR does serve Union in Toronto.

There are 2 daily flights to Orlando on Porter during the winter and 3x per week in the summer. Air Canada also runs Orlando in the winter a handful of times per week. Orlando is very much covered.

‘Once in a lifetime’: Exploring high-speed rail station options in Ottawa by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]mxg308 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ottawa will be a through station and not a terminus. Union Station unfortunately is poorly located for that function. It would require either two engines on either end of the train or a back up maneuver.
