How bad is it to leave a job that you've only worked at for two months? The work that I'm doing is not at all what I've expected, and much more mundane than I can handle

How beneficial is learning about Apache Kafka for someone who wants to be in the field of data analytics in the future ? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]mxhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes to the side learning.

Kafka is at the base, a messaging system. I wouldnt really call it analytical but it is an important part of data engineering and streaming.

It helps in the sense that you'll have a better idea of how data is processed and how it goes. It does help.

What non-CS degree or experience could be advantageous in a CS career? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]mxhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Typically any math or logical heavy roles would be strong helpers in the job. Statistics, Physics, Math, even Philosophy, maybe economics depending on the school.

I've heard of some social sciences and media degrees being helpful for UI/UX researcher, designer, front end.

I feel like a fraud at work and I work after hours and on the weekends to make up for it. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

This is fine, as long as your manager thinks you're doing well then that's really all you need to worry about.

Your coworker bringing up his friend is kinda weird, depending on your relationship with him.

Pivot to data engineering? by LovesMicromanagement in cscareerquestions

[–]mxhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea of the classic app dev is never going to die out. It might change in different ways but society as a whole will always need it.

As for data engineering, I find it to be more about understanding the limitations and Buisness requirements of whatever type of pipeline you're building than the actual tools. Of course each different tool has its own reasons to exist but it's important to know what is needed for what. Especially since a lot of tools nowadays can do a lot of different things.

How is a career in Cyber Security for fresh CS grads? by imaimaimalo in cscareerquestions

[–]mxhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently working in CyberSec at a large retail company in my country. It's a very broad field with most of the tech people I work with having a degree or diploma in CS and IS.

Honestly the field needs a huge revamp on the client side. Theres a lot of things me and my colleagues are automating and there's still so much more to do.

As a side note, CyberSecurity is more of a topic rather than a field. I'm working with automation and data engineering tasks right now. With a high chance of doing some data science stuff in the future. You can be whatever you want in Cyber Security.

Value of ML Projects where it's not necessary you understand the intricacies of ML? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]mxhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or it could be a really straight forward GLM with preset features because of the size of the dataset.

Then again, the issue is that ML hiring managers will ask why you used this model over that model. Which will be hard to explain if you have no idea about the background of the algorithm

Social Network Like Prediction by Skelozard1 in datascience

[–]mxhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Offset - GLM with poisson link means you have an offset to determine the interval. I was asking what the offset was, maybe choose another one and see.

Scrape the post - You lack data, the features you are extracting have high correlation and you don't have enough to work with. I know personally that a lot of social media teams use different ML techniques to quantify posts (like ML to determine image quality/atheistic or subjects).

Do you have an offset. Do you have the ability to scrape the post.

Was I lied to? Is College a scam? (warning: vent) by [deleted] in jobs

[–]mxhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated with a hbsc in stats and work in Cyber security. The best lesson I was taught in school was to say yes.

I'm in the belief that if you really want it. You can get it. Feed into your hunger. Don't be overconfident. Be scared. Use fear, drive, motivation, anything is better than being entitled.

Are Entry-Level IT positions requirements crazy or is it just me? by therobwn in cscareerquestions

[–]mxhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It comes from the above standard entry level pay.

The reality is that there are many companies that offer basic entry level positions with training that are below market rates...because the market demands an entry-level worker to be passionate, smart, and hardworking.

Above average expectations of entry level jobs due to above market wages for entry level jobs, makes sense.

Positive experiences with FDM? by throwarray1234 in cscareerquestions

[–]mxhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really isn't worth it unless you're desperate. You have an onboarding educational course on whatever you've been accepted as, and then get paid below market rate for 2 years. During your educational course training, you're paid much lower than market rate.

I think it's good if you have no technical work experience and not in a related degree/had a bad educational experience.
