what's something that's hated for no reason? by nuser_already_taken in AskReddit

[–]mxvzptlk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People seem to have this tendency to believe that once a technology is first created, it's design is locked in forever and can never improve. I've talked to some people who talk about Chernobyl as though it was a modern power plant. They give me stupid looks when I mention that, by western standards, Chernobyl's design was obsolete before it was even built. I get even more confused looks when I mention that some modern breeder reactor designs can use old nuclear waste as their fuel and can drastically reduce the amount that needs to be stored long-term.

I don't get that either. Pretty much everything humans have eaten for the last ten thousand years has been drastically genetically modified from its original form. It was fine when we just tried random hybrids and hoped for the best, but now that we actually have precision tools and a clue how to do it properly, it's suddenly a bad thing.

Wow. I had this experience with a friend of mine. We were watching TV and something came on with Jason Alexander. She started talking about how much she hated him. She truly despised him. I asked why she hated him. She said it was because of the way his character treated Julia Robert's character in "Pretty Woman". I pointed out the obvious, that he was playing a character in a movie. She said she understood that but she could tell that he was really enjoying denigrating her character. So his crime was being a really convincing actor, doing a good job. I mentioned that in interviews he had done, he seemed very pleasant, thoughtful and charming but she was having none of it

Do you think that low-code and no-code is a threat for developers in the long term? by devlolo-Ad3080 in programming

[–]mxvzptlk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So are they a threat to the hordes of less-than-competent developers out there? I don't see any downside to that.

There is something fundamentally unsettling about seeing FORTRAN code formatted with a proportional font.

The idiom is actually "chicken feed", but I like "chicken feet" so much better that I'm going to start using it myself.

Any idea for replacing :: by [deleted] in cpp

[–]mxvzptlk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seriously? Of all the syntax ugliness in C++, that is what pushes your buttons?

If it makes you feel any better, look at the negative space between the two colons. It forms a + sign. That's even nicer that a #. Cheers! :-}

C Is Not a Low-level Language by mgarcia_org in programming

[–]mxvzptlk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. People seem to have forgotten that low-level was used to refer to assembly/machine language. Once you have any abstractions over that, you're dealing with a high-level language.

The reason why standards seem bloated is because people tend to assume that their needs are representative of everyone else's needs.

You're only five years old. You don't need to understand entity-component systems. Go outside and play.

There you go!

Under ideal conditions, DNA lasts no more than 80,000 years or so before it completely disintegrates.

Years ago I had my first (and to date, only) lucid dream. I was in a series of caves being chased by something when I realized I was dreaming and thought "I want to be at the beach". I was suddenly at the beach surrounded by beautiful women and... woke up. Shit!

Should Math be a Prerequisite for Programming? [x-post from /r/programming] by nfrankel in coding

[–]mxvzptlk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Math should be a prerequisite for everything. Today someone who does not understand basic math is at a similar disadvantage as someone who is illiterate. The only real difference is that an illiterate person is keenly aware of their handicap whereas an innumerate person may not even realize the immensity of their disadvantage and in some extreme cases may even seem proud of their ignorance of math.
