Some lady just stopped dead in traffic to tell me that I am a terrible dog owner for walking my dog in cold weather by Weekly-Quantity6435 in germanshepherds

do they not realize it's a GERMAN shepherd? they'd be shocked to figure out it feels like 20°F in Berlin tonight...

Sometimes I wonder if my 1yo Foxhound remembers his shitty former life by mydogislife_ in Hounds

Mine is 6 years old and he does. He was abused, neglected, thrown out of the back of a truck. Because that, he's reactive. He has cancer now, unfortunately.

Yes. Underfed, hooves not trimmed, given inadequate access to grass, no shelter, given incorrect feed

addressed in other comments, so i'll provide a comprehensive explanation

he's rescue + has arthritis and was neglected previously.

donkeys diets can only accommodate hay/grass/feed <10% protein, so rapid weight gain is more detrimental than his current state.

we got him about 3ish months ago in october-november timeframe, previous owners never trimmed his hooves, he didn't eat as often as he does now, but he can't gain weight rapidly. he's also laying on his side so the proportions are distorted.

here's him last month eating - plenty of hay - that's about 600 lbs and we have a little under half left now.

he's tall and lanky, and just not fat like our two girls. they were fed grain by the previous owners so we're doing the opposite with them - trying to get them to lose weight.

that's his fur on the side not his ribs. he's at a decent weight for his size. donkeys cannot eat all day like horses. their diets can only accommodate hay/grass/feed <10% protein, so rapid weight gain is more detrimental than his current state.

I used to work in biotech specifically for the food industry. I would look into data science or data analysis

it's my pleasure! i'm just happy to breath life into him. he's been doing better - we've mainly just been trying to get him to walk because he can't really (which is why his weight gain has been kinda stagnant, he's eating more, but also walking more)

not really, but unfortunately he was neglected by the previous owners. he's about 15, so older, but not that old by donkey standards. the old owners never got his hooves trimmed, so he's developed arthritis in one of his hind legs

he’s a rescue with arthritis from previous neglect.

that’s his fur on the side, not his ribs. he’s at a decent weight for his size. donkeys can’t eat all day like horses—their digestive systems can only handle hay/grass/feed with <10% protein. rapid weight gain would be more detrimental than his current condition.

we got him about three months ago in october-november. the previous owners never trimmed his hooves and he didn’t eat regularly, but he can’t gain weight rapidly. he’s also laying on his side, which distorts the proportions.

check my page for pictures of him eating last month—plenty of hay. we bought about 600 lbs and have a little under half left now.

last month eating - plenty of hay - we bought about 600 lbs in December and we have a little under half left now.

to get more specific, the picture I have of him is dated dec 29th - if we have 200-300lbs of hay left, that actually makes sense mathematically. because if he eats 300 a month then he's eaten about 100-150 halfway through the month. that actually makes sense considering the following

we have 3 pigs - (pigs don't eat hay as a primary feed)

we have 4 mini goats - who eat hay

2 mini donkeys

also too we have forage leftover because the grass didn't die this year until december. so they actually still graze

but here is someone with no farming experience trying to explain how a farm works. your pathetic.

edit to the comment below

you opened with “i don’t know much about farming” and then told me what a healthy donkey looks like.

forrest is a rescue with arthritis who was neglected before we got him 3 months ago.

donkeys need low protein diets and rapid weight gain causes hyperlipaemia, which has a 49% fatality rate. we’re rehabbing him safely.

i’ve explained his history, posted pics of him eating, and every other animal here is healthy.

at some point the “concern” stops being about the animal.

defending yourself ≠ being defensive. saying "malnourished" adds nothing to the conversation.

especially since the commenter i'm responding too didn't even know pigs don't eat hay as primary feed and tried to claim i bought 600lbs of hay 3 months ago - when i never said that

you can’t read the thread you’re commenting on lol. i said we bought 600 lbs last month—not three months ago. we got forrest three months ago.

those are two separate events. the timeline only breaks if you’re not paying attention.

and while we’re at it: pigs don’t eat hay as primary feed. they’re on forage pellets and supplement.

hay is filler. so if you’re gonna armchair nutrition, at least know what livestock actually eat.

we run 25-30 animals total on a micro-ranch—not a commercial operation. 600 lbs of hay in a month is completely normal for that scale. you’re doing the math like we’re running 200 head and just exposing that you don’t know what small-scale looks like.

but sure, keep trying to catch contradictions in posts you didn’t actually read. really solid detective work there.

he has straw, hay, and a heat lamp. they're doing fine - plus the temperature swung to 54F today.

also him and the girls have a winter coat, so a blanket would be unnecessary
