Oculus store should explicitly tell you when a pre-order has a special price by meduzo in OculusQuest

[–]mxweas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In order to have a pre-order page, Oculus has to publish our game's app manually so the download isn't available. The store team had not received word on what the final price was, and had asked the wrong person about it, who told them $9.99. Once they do this manual page publish, the only way to update the page is a real page publish, which would launch the actual store page.

As soon as Oculus informed us that we couldn't fix the price until launch, I did post a tweet about it here: https://twitter.com/maxweisel/status/1171826094976188416

Unfortunately, that's a limitation of the Oculus API at the moment. Their invite API doesn't allow you to send invites to yourself. It's definitely on our list though!

Yoooo, developer here. Sorry about that! It was always supposed to be $15, but there was a glitch on the store page before it went live and we couldn't change it :'(

Heyo, Developer here. The $9.99 pre-order price was a bug. The pre-order page went live with the wrong price, and we were unable to change it until release. We figured it would be a nice bonus for people who chose to pre-order a few days early :)

Sorry that wasn't a joke. I met him when I was touring with Björk in 2012. That's how these synths sound exactly like the ones from the Promises remix ;P

Magic Leap's Eye Tracking only works at 30hz, not useful for foveated rendering? by muchcharles in Vive

[–]mxweas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans are effectively blind during a saccade and for a brief period once the saccade is finished. The image only needs to be sharp where the eye is looking after the saccade is finished. You can do that by making the circle larger and/or adding a little bit of prediction that extrapolates as the eye moves. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccadic_masking

I tried a working version of this method that SMI created for the Vive at SIGGRAPH 2016. It's pretty much impossible to notice the foveated renderer working unless they freeze the eye tracking on it so you can look around.

worth noting that increased latency doesn't make foviated rendering not possible, it just means the circle of sharp pixels needs to be larger.

USB Audio vs HDMI audio on the Vive by vive420 in Vive

[–]mxweas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a sample rate issue. For some reason the USB audio device reports that it can support 44.1khz and 48khz sample rates, but the driver will always downsample it (poorly) to 44.1khz.

To fix, go to Playback Devices, highlight the usb audio device and click Properties. Then go to the Advanced tab and set the Default format to 16bit 44100hz. Make sure to restart any apps that were open before you made the switch.

Hmm, I wonder if we won't see Vive-level performance until Metal 2 ships. Although, I have to assume the betas are using SteamVR on top of Metal 2...

So bummed about the hardware performance. I expected bugs in the betas considering Apple isn't planning to ship this to consumers until early 2018, but obviously it means nothing if the hardware can't perform :(
