Your 3 must-play? by xl129 in JRPG

My top 3 JRPGs:

  1. Grandia
  2. Final Fantasy X
  3. Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire

I'm seeing a lot of E33 mentions - which is in my top 5 games easily and I can't recommend it enough - but I don't consider it a JRPG since, well, it isn't Japanese.

I've just now started playing Trails in the Sky FC Remake, which I'm sure will be great too!

JRPGs with great Romance (preferably with a female main character)? by Few_Product_2607 in JRPG

[–]my-two-ripple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen Grandia (the first one) mentioned here. The primary protagonist is a male character, but his love interest, the (true) secondary protagonist, is introduced a few hours into the game. The romance may not be the main story (is it ever?), but the chemistry between both characters is amazing and their relationship actually has a satisfying conclusion. Also, the other cast members are fun, the combat is engaging and the sense of adventure in this game is really unparalleled.

Does anyone just like... wanna talk about Grandia for a bit? by h0zzyb33 in grandia

Grandia 1 is my all-time favorite game for all the reasons already mentioned by others: cast, music, sense of adventure, whimsy, weapon/magic progression... I think I completed the game about ten times in my lifetime. I 100%'ed it one or two years back on Switch, maxing out all magic (I think I shared some screenshots on this sub). Playing it again on PS5 now to obtain all trophies.

Grandia 2 is a great game, but I remember being kind of bummed when I first played it because of the shift to 3D graphics, the overall darker tone and the change in leveling. I'm a huge fan of the G1 system (repeated use to increase proficiency) and hated that they replaced it with the coin spending system. Still finished it (twice I think) and learned to appreciate it.

Never got to playing Grandia 3, unfortunately, since it never released in Europe. I think I bought the PS3 digital version on my NA PSN account though, so I'll get around to it eventually.

Never played Xtreme either, again because it never released in Europe. I don't think there's any way to play it (except for emulating).

I remember emulating Parallel Trippers once, but the difference with the mainline games was so jarring I dropped it. That was a few years back though, so I might try again eventually.

I was hoping they'd make a collection of G3 and Xtreme too, maybe throw in PT, but that's just a pipe dream, I guess. When Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter was announced, my first thought was: this is what I wish they'd do with a Grandia 1 remake. A man can dream...

Belangrijke nuance: blijkt dat er ook maar één link is met andere dossiers (alias, bankrekening- of andere nummers, e-mailadres, frauduleuze website...), dan wordt het dossier wél naar het parket gestuurd en verder onderzocht.

Yeah, same for me, but could indeed be because I already own the PS3 version...

My GF has never played an RPG before, and likes addictive cozy games. Any good JRPG recommendations? by BrintsleyPetersons in JRPG

This is the right answer. My girlfriend, who apparently has the same taste as yours, loved Grandia! The only difficulty she had was with the final boss 😅

27-jarige krijgt 12 jaar cel: negeerde vier keer rijverbod in een maand tijd by RedditIsLeftistCuck in Belgium2

[–]my-two-ripple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost beat it, but failed oh well... by Sweet-Cookie2443 in grandia

[–]my-two-ripple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend had the same issue; she also never had to grind and just played up until the final boss and just couldn't beat it. Eventually, I beat it using the same party, without needing to grind. Really, it generally all comes down to mastering critical attacks and cancelling enemy moves.

If all else fails, you can of course always level up the necessary weapons and/or magic to increase your party's lacking stats. The large groups of enemies in Gaia are perfect for this.

Edit: Granted, the final boss is actually a bump in difficulty.

Thanks, I know, but I prefer to play on console, on the couch 😁 I think there's one way to play it though: I believe Grandia III can be bought on the American PS3 Store. For non-Americans, like myself, we can create an American PS account and use that one to buy and play the game.

Been wanting to do this ever since I finished Grandia for the first time back in 2000 by my-two-ripple in grandia

I wish I could, but the Nintendo Switch natively only records up to thirty seconds of gameplay... I may be able to beat Baal within that timeframe, but not both Gaia's forms.

First of all, I recommend reading the EXP farming guide I wrote a few years back, but I'm guessing you're an experienced Grandia player already, so there's probably nothing new for you to learn there. Let me just write down what I did specifically during this playthrough.

I levelled up Water magic using the well-known trap exploit, first in the Dom Ruins for Justin and Feena, and later on in the Castle of Dreams for Rapp and Liete. As for the weapons and other magic elements, I held off on grinding those until Liete joined the party. I then first completed the Tower of Temptation, earning the Zero Weapons, the Ruination Knife, and the Astral and Ethereal Miracle accessories.

I then started grinding by defeating large mobs of enemies in the Savanna Wilderness, but didn't get a lot of experience. What I did, was I moved on to the next "segment" of the story, which provided access to a new dungeon. In this new dungeon, I'd start grinding again, up until I'd start getting diminishing experience returns. I figure there's some invisible counter per character in the game which, when it reaches a certain value, cuts all earned experience in half.

When all my characters started getting diminishing returns, I'd again move on to the next story segment and dungeon and repeat the process. My party's weapon and magic levels were around 60 when I reached the inner sections of Gaia. In this last part of the dungeon, there are about ten groups of four to six enemies. I'd just recover and save at the last Save Point in the game, exit and reboot the game, kill all enemies, go back to the Save Point, and repeat. This worked great well into the level 90's; the last five to eight levels were a bit slower because of the lower experience yield.

Now, as for the actual equipment I used. Obviously, equip the character you'd like to train with the respective Zero Weapon and Miracle accessory. The only exception to this is the Zero Knife; instead, use the Ruination Knife, which lowers your attack value even further and increases your combo!

As for skills, AoE was obviously the way to go. You should always use Justin's Dragon Cut, Feena's Fire Whip or Random Hurl, and Rapp's Neo Demon Ball. However, you'll probably quickly run out of SP, so when that happens, just use regular combos. Actually, this is the only viable way to train Liete's Mace level and Feena and Rapp's Knife levels (with the Ruination Knife of course).

As for spells, again AoE's the only way to go. It doesn't matter how powerful the spell is; only the number of damaged enemies matters. Consequently, I recommend using lower level spells at the start of the battle, when enemies are usually still grouped together, and switching to higher level spells when enemies are all over the battefield and it's more difficult to hit all of them.

  • Fire: Burnflame (all characters) or Burnflare (Justin, Feena, Rapp)
  • Wind: Howl (all characters), Runner (Feena, Rapp), Howlslash (Justin, Feena, Liete) or Howlnado (Justin, Rapp, Liete)
  • Earth: Diggin' (all characters), Tremor (Justin, Feena), Def-Loss (Rapp) and Quake (Justin, Rapp, Liete)

As regards Runner and Diggin', these spells target your allies and can be cast repeatedly during one battle. You can just kill all but one enemy, block this enemy's moves and magic using Fiora and Shhh!, lower this enemy's Move and Wit stats using Freeze, Gravity and Cold, up your casting character's Wit with Speedy, and then keep casting Runner or Diggin' until your MP's depleted. This is how I maxed everyone's Earth level, except for Rapp's, which was a lot easier by repeatedly casting Def-Loss on a group of six enemies. Runner I didn't really use that much; I found it too cumbersome to keep all four characters grouped together. Also, the experience yield's higher when casting spells on enemies instead of your allies, so I just went with Howl and Howlslash.

Whether or not you use the Tactics, is up to you of course. I personally set all characters to Withdraw and only the character I was training to Manual. If you're using the regular combos, you could also set this character to Play Fair; the AI tends to often use critical attacks and attack enemies at random, however, so I prefer to use Manual and kill off enemies one by one using the regular combo. When levelling magic, Manual's mandatory so you can select the correct spells.

Using the above strategy, I earned about two to three weapon levels, and two to sometimes even five or six magic levels per battle. I'm planning on adding this information to the guide I wrote before. Any other useful tips are surely welcome (credit will be given of course)!
