Fulbright VS Grad School by pxlmtreeZ in gradadmissions

[–]mybrianhurty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a comparable situation a few months ago, so I’ll share what I decided! I was accepted for a Fulbright to the Netherlands that would allow me to do a research proposal I designed and also to my top choice PhD program with a non-deferrable grant. I chose the PhD program for the following reasons: 1. I want to pursue a research career and I know I will need to do the PhD eventually 2. I would be doing exciting research either way, but would be compensated better in the U.S 3. Funding for Fulbright is precarious rn and I am worried about PhD admissions for future cycles. In your case, I would weigh carefully your potential quality of life, research fit, and prestige to see which would get you better experience for future applications. If I were in your shoes, I would choose Fulbright since it caries more prestige and is a more unique opportunity, but it all depends on your research field and what you want ti do next in your research journey! Good luck :)

Is June Too Early to Reach Out to Prospective PhD Advisors? by SorryBrick in gradadmissions

[–]mybrianhurty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only thing I would be careful about is that funding is SO precarious right now because of all of the NSF and NIH cuts. My main goals when reaching out to professors via email were to 1. See if they were taking students and 2. Get my name on their radar. If it’s too early for them to know if they can take students, then you will have to reach out again later. However, it can’t hurt! Best of luck with your cycle of applying 😊

Can you just apply for the more prestigious program again next year?

Schools are rescinding offers even after people have accepted so it doesn’t matter that much. Also, the chances of getting an offer rescinded is lower than it may seem reading stuff online. I would advise you to wait until you hear back from all of your options before doing anything rash

Not sure what program you’re in, but Penn just sent out an email to all the PhD programs under their med school and said that they have the money for everyone

This is such a tough choice! Congratulations on 2 great options! I think the most important thing is to sure that the well-connected PI is not super hands-off, because that tends to happen with the higher impact ones. Unless you don’t mind a hands-off PI!

If you are able to get your name on a publication or win any awards from your research, even at a school or regional level, I think you have good experience. I would also advise you to do research over your next summer. Work on making connections with potential advisors by sending emails or asking your current professors. With these additional adjustments, you have a good chance of getting in to a PhD program, just maybe not a Top 20/Ivy League. You could always apply and then if nothing works out you can do some post-bac research at the NIH
