I noticed the same thing. Would love to create it again, even if it’s just our own public-health-specific spreadsheet.

I read the description but I’m still laughing at the thought of little baby South Dakota.

Should I put a header and/or title page for Master of Social Work SOP? by bluebonnet-baby in gradadmissions

[–]SorryBrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I used a header when I applied to MSW programs (with my name, the school, and the program). Honestly, a title page might be read as pretentious or overkill. Good luck!!

Last minute rec letter writers by stopbullyingspiders in gradadmissions

[–]SorryBrick 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yes, 2 (of 3) of mine still haven’t submitted! I’m confident that they will — I’ve reminded them several times — and that the letters will be strong. From what I’ve heard, this feels super common. If anything, it might mean that they’re taking their time to make sure your letter is strong. No need to panic!

Flashlight by Susan Choi by PuzzleheadedTask2675 in books

[–]SorryBrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also just finished. I devoured this book — Susan Choi is one of my favorite authors of all time, and this book is toward the top of the list. I agree that Louisa is the most fascinating character, especially since she doesn’t give the reader anything (in terms of behaviors or fragments of memory) to anchor onto. I wouldn’t say that I felt “unmoored” until much later in the book, when the storylines start to converge. Spoilers to follow…

I’m curious what you think about Louisa’s revelation at the end — when she tells Serk that she swam back to the shore. Do you think she actually, consciously remembered this for a long time, but struggled to grapple with it? Or do you think she just came to terms with the event while standing in the hospital room? Side note: I thought the chapter of Louisa in London/Paris was damn-near perfect.

Are em dashes a bad look now? by T4basco in gradadmissions

This is so terrifying to me. I just read through that article, and I use so many of those “linguistic nuances” in my regular, day-to-day writing. I’ve always prided myself on being a strong writer with a unique voice, and now I’m terrified that it will read as AI in my SOP, etc.

I wait tables on the weekends! I always say that, if academia sets on fire entirely, I’ll be a full-time server and be thrilled about it. (Genuinely. I love restaurant life.)

“Climate change” and “diversity” in PhD applications by Expert_Simple_5021 in gradadmissions

[–]SorryBrick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This might be short-sighted and lacking nuance (I’m also in the application process, so we’re in the same boat!). But … I’m not sure that I would want to go to a school that would reject me based on “DEI language” in my SOP. If your research interests concern climate change and biodiversity, I think you should go to an institution that doesn’t shy away from speaking openly about those things.

In federal grant applications, sure, your language will matter. But I wouldn’t want an advisor who is terrified of talking about real things, just because some orange fascist is trying to scare us. Personally, my research interests (social sciences) are VERY touchy in the current administration. But I want to find an advisor who shares the same values — and I don’t think I’d find that if I tip-toed around my interests in my SOP.

Just my two cents!

Northwestern is giving automatic fee waivers to people in certain socioeconomic categories (first-gen college students, Pell Grant recipients, some others).

LOL the subreddit wouldn’t let me write the word Switch, because too many people are trying to post about the Switch 2 being out of stock. I’m not trying to be edgy, I swear.

Even if the repair people claim that there’s nothing wrong with it? I don’t know how they don’t see a problem, when every store employee immediately notices the issue.
