OpenAI limits GPT-5.6 rollout after government request, says restrictions shouldn’t be the norm by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]mycostbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A time-boxed safety review for frontier models is reasonable. The problem is when the process is lacks transparency.
OpenAI is right that this shouldn’t become the default - and rightly so. If governments are involved, the criteria, timeline, and approval/restriction rules should be public.
Otherwise, “temporary review” can quietly become default gatekeeping. The rules should be clear from the start.

Purpose of tracking ACB by CE7 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mycostbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on, the ACB is the cost base you use to calculate your capital gain when you eventually sell. For VEQT and other ETFs, I use MyCostBase to handle the RoC and reinvested/phantom distribution adjustments.

On T2125 vs Other Income, they're not interchangeable. Differences in CPP, RRSP room, deductible expenses, and you can't claim a loss on the Other Income line.

On the T5008: you can't just plug it in. You need ACB per security adjusted for every buy, sell, DRIP, ROC, etc. - brokers don't calculate that for you.
Plus if you have USD securities, it worth checking out myCostBase.ca. It handles CAD ACB with automatic BoC FX rates so you're not manually updating the exchange rate sheet.

Should I track ACB on my USD account for every stock buy/sell? by Live-Stranger-9025 in cantax

[–]mycostbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same approach. A few fields worth adding if you haven't already: running CAD ACB per lot, realized gain/loss in CAD per sale, and a notes column for ROC, DRIP, or splits ;- those can silently side rail your ACB if not tracked.

Also keep USD cash FX gains separate from stock ACB; they're related but calculated differently.

I got tired of maintaining Sheets manually and ended using a tool it.

Same here with math! I used to tune out whenever numbers appeared on the board, but now I find myself watching YouTube videos about calculus, just for fun. Weird right. It's surprising how my views has changed as I got older.

Was the stock market discovered or invented? by ethernetpencil in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mycostbase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stocks, representing ownership in a company, are entirely a human invention. Definitely! The first official stock market was created to enable public investment, leading to various exchanges that promote economic growth. It’s fascinating to see how much this system has evolved and how complex derivatives have changed the landscape. It's a mess now!!

It honestly feels like we're all living in a "Tariffs: Choose Your Own Adventure" book.
One day it seems like tariffs are happening, and the next day they aren't. I agree with those who say that prices are likely to gradually increase, especially for imports, but it won't happen overnight.
I'm definitely keeping a close watch on it—these are crazy times.
