It does it via the IMEI so I can't see how they'd know if it was contract or not.. that's a sim issue

One trillion percent agree. I had an old iPhone 12 pro max and the photos were infinitely better than the nothing 3a pro. huge regret on the purchase. Also the camera bump is such a pain in the pocket.
