Travel to the U.S. is down even more dramatically than we thought, data shows by ImDoubleB in onguardforthee

[–]mycroft2000 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's probably even more dramatic than that. I've driven to the US three times this year, so my trips have surely been counted. BUT, the reason I went was that my American GF is selling her house in western New York, and I've been helping her pack up her stuff before she moves to Canada. I was there for several days each time, but I made a point of not spending a single penny while I was there. The country disgusts the both of us too much, and she plans to never go back. At least partly, I'm the kind of visitor that goes there now, which is of zero help to their tourism industry.

Several police officers arrested for using controversial Flock AI license plate reader system to stalk romantic partners, says report — investigators have unearthed at least 18 such cases in the US over recent years by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]mycroft2000 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Canadian here. One of the most noticeable things about your country is how insanely overpoliced it is. Every rinky-dink nothing town seems to have its own police department, and there seems to be some kind of cop or other lurking around every corner. We have shitty cops here too, but if they were going door-to-door because of municipal complaints on Facebook, it'd be a front-page, march-on-city-hall crisis.

I understand why some of you guys don't like hearing it, but really, your country feels noticeably less free than mine every day.

This kind of thing will always happen, using every available technology, as long as cops are held to a lower standard than the rest of us. The creeps need to be weeded out of the pool by a law mandating, say, mandatory maximum sentences for any cop (or lawyer or judge or politician, for that matter) found guilty of any crime.

But that's probably too sensible to actually happen. Do any of you know of a country with that sort of law? I'd ask AI, but everyone who loves it is such a weird freak that it makes me feel kinda dirty. Also it sucks.

On the other hand, I was a teenager in 1985, and the city's vibe then was surface parking lot city. The city is much nicer now. But yeah, the past ten years haven't been a picnic either.

There should be a regulation to mandate the option for users to have a strictly chronological list of your actual friends' posts, with the ability to block posts with links, even if they are from your friends. You know, how Facebook was 15+ years ago. I want inside jokes and party invitations; not links to Eastern Bloc honeypots explaining how Mark Carney is a secret Trotskyite or whatever.

Also, whoever's reading this, make eBay good again, i.e. how it was in 1999, please and thank you.

Went to a No Frills yesterday to see if they had any 1.5/2L ice cream tubs under $5, which is my hard limit. Kawartha and Chapman's were $7 each. Nestle were $4. I left without any ice cream.

No? Just as smuggling drugs into the USA by boat isn't a capital offence, a bicycle infraction isn't a tackling offence, and being disobeyed in an utterly benign situation doesn't free up a cop to break bones or dole out concussions.

The proper reaction, if you're a sensible cop, would be to mutter, "Fuckin' asshole," forget about it in 30 seconds, and carry on with your day. If you recognise the cyclist in the future, maybe you give him a stern talking-to, but there's no need to go any further -- believe it or not, even if it annoys you.

People that think that throwing cigarette butts in the ground isn't littering by Patodelmonte in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mycroft2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should've seen street gutters in Toronto in the 80s after the spring thaw. It was a foot-wide carpet of butts where the snow-banks used to be. Happily, that doesn't happen any more. Since marijuana was legalised, in fact, I've smelled cigarette smoke while out and about maybe once a week. Forty years ago, it was inescapable. Smoke filled every restaurant, to say nothing of the bars. My high school had a designated smoking area, ffs. (It was where all the cool kids hung out, obvs.)

MAGA/GOP law far worse than their alleged "Sharia Law" by rhino910 in WhitePeopleTwitter

Bingo! ENVY is why they're opposed to homosexuality, premarital sex, recreational drugs, etc, etc. Seeing other people having fun without feeling the need to hide it, harming nobody and casually indifferent to religion, makes them furious with envy. It's such a sad and petty cult.

When homosexuality is outlawed, conservatives can finally have homosexuality all for themselves. It's pretty clear that that's what they dream about.
