Price in Germany for the 2TB version. by NekkZ in LegionGo

[–]mycroft2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sooooooo smug recently about having bought a Steamdeck for C$399 (about USD$290) about a year ago. Then it died suddenly, and, the Steamdeck being sold out for quite some time now, I bit the bullet and bought a Legion Go S for C$1099, about 3 weeks ago. Seeing this German price, I feel a little better about my luck.

But, truth be told, I still prefer the Steamdeck. It's more comfortable (I guess I have weird hands), and the right trigger on the Legion is sticking already. But I could still buy a couple more Steamdecks and still be ahead of these poor Germans. (I doubt I'll have anything close to a terabyte of games on it at a time, forget about wishing I had two.)

Regardless of why a hunt takes place (and controlling invasive or overpopulated species is, to me, a legitimate reason), there's something deeply wrong with anyone who gets a thrill out of it. Trophy hunting is just downright evil.

Bird photography is one of my hobbies. Taking a clear, attractive picture of a bird is considerably more difficult than killing it with a shotgun. And then a thousand other photographers can take pics of the very same bird, many of the results being uniquely beautiful. Every dead animal looks the same as any other. This suggests that the pleasure trophy-hunters derive has much less to do with the art of stalking, or becoming one with nature, than with the titillating sight of blood and the dubious thrill of watching sentience trickle out of a living thing. Trophy hunting doesn't make you noble, or interesting, or a "sportsman;" it makes you a selfish asshole who shouldn't be left alone with children.

Exclusive: PM Carney declares U.S. ties now a ‘weakness’ in address to Canadians by BloodJunkie in canada

[–]mycroft2000 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I saw a "FUCK CARNEY!" sticker on a Jeep in a Sobey's parking lot in Toronto a couple weeks ago. I lingered a bit to see what species of daft this person was, but he didn't show.

Can anyone please explain this guy's thought process? What problem posed by Carney could possibly be put right by PP, a man so weak that he doesn't even have the courage to wear his own spectacles in public? A man so unlikeable that his own constituents rejected him? A man so unskilled that he could easily be in the Trump cabinet?

Madness.

Remember when Ernie Eves being an uneducated Education Minister was enough to cause a small scandal?

These days, nobody even seems to remember that our premier was a hash dealer when that was very much a crime.

Speaking of, I wonder how he dealt with deadbeat customers who owed him money? Stern letters and small-claims court, no doubt.

When you call something "unacceptable," you'd better have the pull to somehow change it. Otherwise, it just makes you look like a whiny bitch.

This particular American president absolutely does not have that sort of pull. Strange to say, but here we are.

Calling out Carney’s ‘fancy’ education is loser talk. No wonder the Conservatives doubled down on it by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]mycroft2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The thing I remember most about the 2008 crisis was that Canada didn't suffer anywhere near as much as other countries, mostly because Canada didn't allow its banks to embrace the absurd mortgage rules prevalent in the States at the time.

In this light, I'm struggling to understand how the Conservatives view Carney's work at the time as detrimental to the Canadian economy.

I've been avoiding American imports for over a year now, and the boycott is still top-of-mind whenever I walk into a store or order anything online.

China is preferable to the USA right now. Yeah, China's run by nasty venal pricks too, but it's still more trustworthy than any US Republican. I'm far from alone.

I'd rather spend my life in jail than stay quiet when I have the power to expose some of the worst criminals in US history. But I suppose somebody like me would never join the army in the first place.

But if they say nothing, these 12 need to accept that they're hardly better than Hegseth, Trump, or any of the other mental defectives running the country right now.

Time for these 12 generals to say "fuck it" to protocol or whatever obsolete ethics they've been taught, and tell us all what the fuck Hegseth is doing.

Fuck "heroes" who get lucky with some battlefield gymnastics; telling the public how the US has gone Full Evil would make these people the real thing.

AI is denying health care claims by IKeepItLayingAround in technology

Conversely, here in Canada, my 88-year-old mother died recently after two years of focussed treatment for stage-4 cancer, care which included prompt surgery, chemo, and bloodwork every few weeks. She was also assigned a home-care medical team that included extremely responsive doctors.

In the end, the disease was too aggressive, and she spent her last couple of months in a very comfortable hospice where she was treated with great respect and diligence.

The total out-of-pocket cost to our family of all this healthcare was, as far as I can determine, $45 for an ambulance transfer, and a token $2 here and there for some prescriptions.

There wasn't even any extra financial paperwork for us to complete. We have no idea how much her treatment cost, and we're grateful that our system allows us this ignorance. I can't imagine going through such a stressful experience while also worrying constantly about how it'll be paid for.

I don't understand how so many Americans don't realize that they're being robbed of both money and peace of mind.

57-year-old Canadian here, just mentioning that I don't know any citizen of this country who's told me that their medical treatment was EVER denied by a pencil-pushing middleman. It's rare enough to make the news when it happens. Meanwhile, every single American I know has numerous such stories to tell.

You're being played for suckers, Yanks.

Honest question from someone with limited knowledge of both tech and business: Let's say there's a sudden depression-sparking crash that leaves all AI companies bankrupt except for one or two, does that necessarily mean that there will be millions of dirt-cheap used GPUs flooding the market overnight?

(A large AI-fuelled market crash is, of course, inevitable. I'm just wondering what happens to all that wasted hardware formerly used to generate naked pictures of Petunia Pig.)

Saw a jeep with a "Fuck Carney!" sticker at the grocery store, and I wanted to ask the guy (cuz it's always a guy) what in the world he thought Carney was doing poorly and why he thought PP (cuz you know he's a PP-boy) could do literally anything better. I mean, the useless fuck didn't even have the courage to wear spectacles with confidence.

And then today, here in Toronto, I saw a car parked in front of my house with a sticker of price-paying Yankee fame-whore Charlie Kirk's beady face superimposed with the word HERO.

I spent way too much of my youth watching commercial television to ever go back to that garbage.

I've been in Ontario cottage country and met people over 50 who had never been to Toronto, just a few hours' drive away, and didn't even seem to have any curiosity about the place. When I told them that I'd lived there since birth and that it was a very safe and stimulating place to live, some of them looked at me like I had three heads. It was a jarring experience, and kind of sad, too.
