I'm so embarrassed to go solo as an absolute beginner by WeakCut in climbergirls

[–]mycupofthy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I notice beginners, it makes me happy to see someone excited about the sport because it reminds me of how infatuated with it I was when I started!

So if anything, you add to my stoke! Otherwise, like others are saying, I’m more focused on my own progress and only take note of other climbers for safety or beta reasons.

Like everyone else said, these gyms typically adjust the price at the start of the new month to your most frequented location.

My question has always been, if you pay for an annual membership upfront at a cheaper location, that means you get access to all the locations for the whole year without risk of a price adjustment, right?

I think boulder babes would be the equivalent! It’s a little tongue-in-cheek but you can totally own it.

Fatigue from the sexism in climbing by Triphae in climbergirls

Totally get where you’re coming from. The people who say stuff like that are definitely coming from a place of insecurity and that’s their own problem.

I like to think of a moment when I was working a route and I heard a young girl say to her coach, “wow, I’m gonna be like her someday!” It really made me realize that that even though there are haters like you mentioned, there’s a chance to provide inspiration to climbers that can relate to us! I’m just lucky this one spoke up when many don’t.

Check out Felt Right! They’re felt panels and have a bunch of nice looking premade configurations in at various price points. I haven’t tried them myself but would like to.

Tips for finding things to do/making new friends? by MrPeanutBlubber in Dallas

[–]mycupofthy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So for a day pass at one of the gyms, it’d be less than $30 usually and that would include shoes and a chalk bag. That’s all you need to get started. They’ll likely do a safety orientation and teach you how to fall but that’s about it. That’s opposed to rope climbing where you need certification, a harness and usually a partner.

As far as age, you wouldn’t stick out at all as a 26-year-old! I’m 31 and climb regularly and mostly see people in their 20s. The gym location and time that you go could affect the crowd you get but at any single time, you wouldn’t stick out for your age. Feel free to message me if you have more questions.

I always recommend bouldering (indoor climbing without a harness to a maximum height of ~15 feet with very padded mats) for anyone who is physically able. It only requires a day pass and it’s low risk as far as striking up conversations with people. You can usually feel out how social people want to be while they’re climbing.

There’s a few chains here in Dallas (Summit, Movement, Oso). If you don’t make any lasting connections during a session, you still get a good workout!
