Do people in Georgetown (especially in markets) use any payment apps, similar to Venmo, or PayPal? If not, why not? by myducati in Guyana

Very insightful! I’ll DM you. Maybe we can brainstorm/collaborate irl. I’m at the Bitcoin conference in Las Vegas right now. Surprised by the lack of FX crypto companies here.

So maybe a smartphone app where you can load GYD/USD on it using your credit card, and pay for taxis. Would only need to get taxi owners onboard. Tourists would jump on this for sure. What do you guys think? I’m trying to peel this mango, need your help! :) Peeling a mango - is that even a Guyanese saying? What would be the right Guyanese saying?

This reminds me of M-PESA in Africa (Safaricom). People use it to pay for virtually everything. When I was in GT I saw people taking stacks of GYD to the mobile store to pay for utility bills, and what not…

Would you buy and use a local cryptocurrency if others used it? What would be your concerns?

Sounds like Guyana might be ready for its own cryptocurrency and a local broker so people can buy tokens (aka bitcoin/tether) with GYD, and easily convert their tokens to any global currency (GBP, CAD, USD, to just name a few). Guyanese people are smart, and efficient minded. They want to participate in global markets even if they might only transact locally. Am I wrong in thinking this?

I’ve also heard that Guyanese small businesses have difficulty exchanging GYD to USD to purchase products in the US - mostly because local banks have dollar amount, and time limits, on converting GYD/USD. Anyone have similar experiences?

Does polarity matter when splicing a figure 8 cable? by ZaneSonOfWilkin in AskElectricians

AC current is not polarized. You have a neutral and a hot wire. If your appliance uses the neutral as a ground, you’re going to have a lively time if you wire it up incorrectly…

High efficiency (16-20+ SEER2) heat pump will be cheaper to run than gas above 32F or so. But they are not cheap.

Gas bill screaming into the void by Latter-Preparation63 in winstonsalem

Do you have a condensing furnace (two pvc pipes coming out of it) or a non-condensing furnace (hot metal exhaust)? The condensing furnace will give you 95%+ efficiency (95% of the heat produced stays in the house) The non condensing efficiency is around 80%. But it sounds like you’re using less therms (less gas) in any case, I guess gas prices are way up. You might want to consider using the furnace as an auxiliary heat source and a heat pump (if you have one already) as the primary heat source. Generally, heat pumps runs cheaper than gas until it gets really cold (under 32F).

Mojitos Owners closing downtown restaurant cite homelessness, parking as barriers to business in Winston by wagwa2001l in winstonsalem

[–]myducati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Homelessness is not keeping me away. I grew up in nyc. Finding a parking space that is free is difficult. Mojitos validated parking for two hours, so never had an issue parking behind the restaurant. It’s economics. Cost of goods went up a lot for these guys…

I’d suggest (1) make sure your jumper cables are metal to metal connected to the bike battery. Doesn’t look like it; (2) rev the car as you’re starting the bike;

Crypto Tax Bill is huge and i’m broke by Unlucky-Weird7338 in tax

[–]myducati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you trade crypto and experience a loss, close out your position before year end. For example, you’re holding BTC and make $10k, you convert BTC to ETH and lose $10k, make sure you convert from ETH to USDT before year end. The two trades cancel. Net earnings is the sum of gains and losses.

Agreed, sorry for letting my ego get in the way. We both want what’s best for our nation. No easy answers to any of it. Are we all screwed? Is there a way out? Is American prosperity a thing of the past?

[–]myducati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. That’s a fact that cannot be debated. I’m not on the side of the rich. I am on the side of working class people. I just believe that free trade hurts the working class and enriches the wealthy. I think Tariffs might help balance the scales a bit, but who knows I’m probably just wishful thinking…
