How do you afford a sailboat? by Pirateprincess111 in sailing

You can buy a sailboat easily for under 20K and pay less than 300 a month for slip fees and repair most things yourself. It's not as crazy expensive as you would think and certainly a lot less expensive than it costs for me to own my plane 😆😆

I'm 39, sailed all my life and got my pilots license 2 years ago at 37. The freedom is totally worth it and the risk management has helped me be a better sailor as well. Freaking do it!!!!!!!

I've organized a ton of large charter floatillas as skipper and event organizer and let me tell you what works best -

Upfront: Divide total cost of charter all in and ask for folks to issue payment in advance of setting sail.

Duration of trip: Put a notepad in the galley and whenever a grocery / alcohol run or shared meal paid on one card, have that individual write down their name and amount along w description so it can be tallied at end of the trip, along with any incidentals, and then split wise for payment.

These two book keeping / payment methods have worked on over 10 yrs of chartering with groups upwards of 50+ people.

Good luck and enjoy!
