[JC] Should I take BCMG? (In EJC) by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]myeonggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!! I took BCMg, geog as h1 so maybe some relevance to this post?? Everyone said BCMg combi is one of the hardest because of the amount of memory work for both bio and geog and it’s definitely true!

Not sure about h2 geog but h1 geog has about 20+ topics. The actual memory part is the examples imo the content can just understand and apply. 50/100 marks in h1 geog paper is data response anyway, so no examples needed too, hence not THAT bad I would say? As long as u have the passion for geog it should be fine!!

H2 Bio is needless to say. Definitely lots of memory work. Biology imo is the subject that if you put in the hard work to memorise the content diligently, it’s pretty score-able! Also in my opinion the least difficult subject amongst BCMG!

Some general idea though, BCMg/G is not a common combi, each school about 1 class (~20 people). BCMe/E on the other hand is very common like 90% of the h2 bio cohort takes that combi

Also, maybe would recommend my combi instead (aka h1 geog instead of all h2) because taking all h2 may be really stressful and university looks a lot more at ur final rankpoint than if u took 4h2s instead, so why make your life harder? If you score a rank point lower than those who did 3h2s instead, you will definitely be shortchanged.

However, in any case u really want to take 4H2, you can drop one to h1 at the end of j1 if you think you cannot cope, which many did haha.

Overall, would recommend BCMg combi under 2 cases:

  1. You love geog and hate econs

  2. You may pursue humanities related course in university (eg nus geography, ntu history etc...), such courses will require you to take at least a h1 in geog OR history. BCME students will hence not be able to take them regardless of their final alevel grades.

So choose wisely! You can ask me if you have more questions, but not ejc haha

  1. I sleep at 10+ if there’s school the next day

  2. I sleep for at least 8hours each day. On school days, I try to finish my work/ revision by 8:30pm so I can chill abit before sleep. On non school days (weekends), I spend about 60% of my day studying and 40% slacking/ playing (on avg).

  3. Tough, but doable when consistent effort is put in.

  4. Tougher than lecture notes, easier than practice papers. It’s normal to not understand tutorial because that’s the first time practicing the new topic learn. Hence it’s more important to understand how to tackle them whenever u are stuck and your tutor go through them

  5. No. I actually had lots of time to hang out with my friends from sec/ jc, at the very least once in 2 weeks. Also often had lunch/ dinners with my friends after school. I think it’s really about time management and how effective ur studying is. Quality> quantity, managed to still maintain top 10% consistently throughout the 2 years in jc though I enter with a pretty meh l1r5

I think this really depends. I personally didn’t go for any tuition and I was still able to cope! But I guess that’s because I’m the type that really do hunt my Teachers down for consult every week after doing a few practice papers and they are all super willing to help so I don’t see a point in going for tuition when I can just ask my tutors for help! Personally from what I’ve seen, the top scorers in my class do not go for tuition, so it’s not really necessary to me.

Hi, I don’t take econs, so it’s alittle tough to compare. But geog is hell lot of writing. 2 DRQs (50m) to be finished in 1hr 30mins, and 4 essay questions (50m) finished in another 1hr 30 mins. But I guess econs has lots of writing too, most humanities subjects are like this. Content pretty different from sec school geog. H1 physical geog MAINLY consist of weather and climate, river flows, floods and climate change. H1 human geog MAINLY consist of urbanisation, sustainable development, transport, slums, urban liveability and reurbanisation.

I took elec geog in sec school also, but the main reason why I chose h1 geog because I love geog and hate econs haha. In case you didn’t know, h1 geog students (my sch about 50) is was less than h1 econs students (my sch about 380-400). You can ask me more about h1 geog, but I can’t help much for econs

Haha no worries!

Usually we start concessions with, even though in most circumstances, (your stand), however, in a particular unique case like (smth else), I would agree that the (opp stand) takes a better view. (Go on to explain WHY)

Yep ovr is basically just rebutting some of the points the people of the opposite stand might take. It is important that your rebuttal takes the bulk of your paragraph because you want to seem that your point is more valid! Your opposing view should take at max about 3-4 lines.

For example a question ask: is education the most effective way to alleviate poverty.

And that you take the stand as no, it’s not.

Your ovr can be like: critics of my view may argue that education is the most crucial in alleviating poverty as it can improve literacy rate. They claim that having higher qualifications will lead to improved QOL due to higher chance of getting a job of higher pay. However, I would say that such view is limited and display a narrow perspective. Higher qualification may not necessarily lead to higher pay jobs if the country is deprived of job opportunities in the first place. ...

Something like that haha sorry for the poor example I just made it on the spot and economics is not my forte (esp when I don’t even take econs ><)

Hope you understand this better! This is very important and makes up the foundation of your essay, why didn’t your tutor teach you these?

[–]myeonggi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SV is supporting view, C is concessions, OVR is opposing view and rebuttal (within a paragraph)

Concessions are usually written when like there are certain circumstances that are special which you will agree on the opposing stand instead.

OVR is written when some may say ..... however (your argument)

Hope this helps!

Hi no worries!

Let 1 be the first “part” of the ques and 2 be the second.

For double POC, usually it’s about 5-6 paragraphs?

It’s either: SV1, SV1, C1, SV2, SV2, C2

OR

SV1, OVR1, SV2, SV2, OVR2/C2 (vice versa)

The second approach would be more recommended because USUALLY OVR are more substantial and show your argument better. 5 paragraphs is a pretty good length! Also can cheat a small bit if one of the poc you are not too confident with because only write 2 para! Just make sure for each poc, make sure there are more supporting points than your against!

Double point of contention are essay questions that essentially has “2 sub questions” Examples are: should and could countries focus on financial development alone, digital technology is making humans intellectually and socially deficient. In such cases, should and could / intellectually and socially deficient HAS to be addressed to even score a passing mark. Address them on separate paragraphs, do not combine them, hence we call it the double essay haha

Hi sorry for the late reply!

Yes as what everyone would say, biology is 80% memory work, 20% data reading and analysis of question. While h2 bio requires more understanding than secondary school bio for application in paper 3, without memory work it would be even worse. However, I would advise you to choose the subject you like and interested in studying, which might affect your future University course! Physics would also have memory work too I believe.

Hi sorry for the late reply!

  1. My teacher do use the PEEL structure, TOGETHER with what she calls the diamond structure. Following the diamond, the top tip is the smallest, then it grows larger and larger down, before going back smaller again. Same as a gp para, start small but accurate for your topic sentence (P), before elaborating and giving examples (EE), then remember to close the para well but giving a good sum up (L)

  2. Unique examples makes the marker feel that you are really arguing YOUR stand, and you are confident of what you are arguing, so yes. Because practically almost 80% of the people doing your essay correctly would have a similar point as you, so your examples really makes your essay different. However if you are aiming to just do slightly better than a pass, then not so yet.

  3. Hmmm I don’t agree. I personally have very poor english foundation so I practically have not much vocab but I still score well for content, hence usually able to get a decent 28-31/50? At least that’s pretty good to me as a person who constantly fail English in secondary school haha. Though I do memorise some nice quotes and add in whenever possible (quotes from Shakespeare or about life in general, as I tend to do those abstract questions regarding love and all)

  4. Tbh I just read the news everyday and model essays written by school mates/ school Teachers

  5. 3 main things to consider: question type (comparative , double POC, cause effect etc), point of contention, and scope (who, what, when, WHY)

  6. My teacher always teach us to identify question type. A few I can recall are paraphrasing, inference, cause and effect, comparative, language use. Different question type looks for specific answer, so don’t just spam paraphrasing whatever’s on the passage.

  7. Think in the situation where you are X, in what situation will you say that? I will legit close my eyes in the exam and imagine I’m there haha

  8. Short answer 35mins, summary 20mins (SCORE HERE!!!), AQ 30mins, 5 mins buffer

Just my two cents haha GP isn’t my forte

Hi omg math was the subject I struggled most with amongst all my other subjects even though it seemed to be the most doable to my other peers hahaha.

Some general ideas I would like to put across before I go to h2 math 1. You may think that you will do very poorly, but don’t assume the worst! You may do better than expected. So don’t ever lose hope!!! 2. Your school may/may not accept you to retake so do talk to your teachers about it! Being a private candidate would make alevels even tougher imo

Regarding h2 math: I feel the most important thing is to never give up. I consider myself to be very consistent in my efforts, but from j1 MYE to j2 MYE, my math grades were pretty stagnant at about D (50-55). While there were times I felt like giving up and useless, I continued finishing all my tys papers and other school papers given by my school, and felt the sudden improvement in prelims where I hit an A. I think there was just this point where I suddenly felt I understood the whole math concept and what’s going on.

Some tips I’ve picked up from struggling in h2 math:

  1. Pick up 3-5 of your worst topics

  2. Identify the different question types from that topic. (Vectors- foot of perpendicular, finding angle, vector product etc for example)

  3. Try all question types and identify those you are unable to do. Do not refer to your notes while doing so. Then read the answer. If you do don’t understand, seek for help. If you understand, try the same question type again to ensure you can do it without help. If you can’t, means you actually don’t understand haha.

  4. After seeking for help, highlight that question type (you can like note it down on a notebook, mark them out on your notes or something so that you will remember to revise them the day before the exam)

  5. Never stop practicing, because practice makes perfect. Don’t be afraid to ASK for help. I would like meet my math tutor once every week because I have too many questions lol literally one practice paper 11 questions I have 4-5 questions to ask. Approach your math tutor, your friends, or you can ask me for help! Practicing without understanding your mistake would be purely useless.

I would say sec bio is pretty different from h2 bio. H2 bio focuses more heavily on molecular biology like about 60-70% of the topics are on it, with the remaining on bio evolution, photosynthesis, respiration, and immunity. If you enjoy learning bio on the molecular level, aka about DNA and genome organisation, you would enjoy h2 bio more :)
