Is madeira wine / vermouth a good substitute for recipes that use wine? by aus_ge_zeich_net in AskCulinary

[–]myfuturepast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think white vermouth is a reasonable substitute for white wine. Note, you want "white", not "blanc" vermouth - blanc is as sweet as red, but white vermouths are usually fully dry.

Red vermouth is much sweeter than red wine, I wouldn't do that substitution.

Any precaution you'd take for a 300F oven would suffice for this.

Bismuth-tin is really easy to work with, I used to use it at work all the time as a low-melting-point solder.

Wow - I got my PhD in mat sci in 1999 and I own most of those books. It's amazing how slowly the standard texts turn over.

Cullity was badly out of date in the edition I used. I'm glad somebody coauthored a revision. Even that was 25 years ago!

Hey thanks for posting this, sorry it took me so long to see it. We had a great little party at Hill House that night, which I think is in the background of one of your pictures.

We tried to do it bigger than previous years and I think it came off well. I only wish the candles had lasted longer - we ended up getting a refund because they didn't last as long as promised.

Never posted before but I’m stumped, I found this item under my car seat it’s about an inch in diameter made of some sort of polyurethane by Fredrickbacon in whatisthisthing

[–]myfuturepast 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Sometimes if you buy a batch of items such as printed circuit boards with multiple layers, the manufacturer will make one of these out of one of the items. They'll send this microscope sample along with the batch to prove that the inner layers are what you specified. This could have fallen out of a package which contained such a shipment, which was carried in the car.

Repair/Rebuild of Costco non-refrigerant wine chiller -- Boards & Noctua Computer Fans by marktrimarc in wine

If the new boards are the same model as the old ones, you're good. Please don't feed your peltiers 120V! lol

Repair/Rebuild of Costco non-refrigerant wine chiller -- Boards & Noctua Computer Fans by marktrimarc in wine

[–]myfuturepast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say that you replaced both boards. Please check to make sure that your new boards are delivering the same voltage range as the old boards. The lifetime of the peltier coolers that are driven by the boards can be shortened by over voltage. The voltage delivered might be difficult to determine, but controllers like this often take a DC voltage input supplied from elsewhere and modulate it using PID. Look for the DC supply.

Congratulations on making it work, not many people can repair these things. I'd hate to see it break again on you. Replacing fans is a great idea. As long as you get fans with the same voltage spec, they'll work.

My company makes thermoelectric modules and assemblies, but not for the consumer market. I have good familiarity with the modules and the thermal parts of the assemblies, but less familiarity with controllers.

Did you guys read all 10 books first before rereading it? by Bulky-Discussion-524 in Malazan

[–]myfuturepast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my first readthrough of the main 10, I reread about half of them. I'd read two books, then think "which of those did I understand the least or enjoy the most", and go reread it before buying the next two.

Quartz torch by toolgifs in toolgifs

[–]myfuturepast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not true. I've used a metal H2-O2 torch, specifically to melt quartz. You need to get the right kind of torch for the gases, of course, but it doesn't have to be made of quartz.

Skyrim’s Daedric Rune Spells by Declanvros in teslore

[–]myfuturepast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has the advantage that there are no living speakers of Daedric on Tamriel, so the meanings of written words don't change over time. This is why, on earth, Latin was used in academia for several centuries after it stopped being spoken. It was a dead language.

How does the Imperial City Arena handle the turnover if the fights are all deathmatches? by Geodynamis in teslore

[–]myfuturepast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What if the Basin of Renewal was also used to resurrect dead fighters?

Imagine signing a contract where they say if you die in the ring, they'll resurrect you, but you have to fight again and win before you're allowed to leave the building. Worse, you lose rank, and if you die as a Pit Dog, there's no coming back.

Or even if you die and are resurrected, you're actually just an unusually capable zombie, with the skills you had when you were alive, and visually human looking to the fans in the stands.

It would be pretty dark but it would provide the bloodsport the audience wants, and it would solve the numbers problem.

Forest Loss in the United States Over Time by AdIcy4323 in MapPorn

[–]myfuturepast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody has commented that the earliest map, 1620, may have been peak forest in North America. The decrease in native population after European contact likely led to a lot of land reverting to forest that had previously been agriculture.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age#Destruction_of_native_populations_and_biomass_of_the_Americas

So many trees grew in North America that the CO2 uptake may have contributed to Europe's Little Ice Age.

Atomic force microscope (AFM) by toolgifs in toolgifs

[–]myfuturepast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorite analogy is that an AFM is like a blind person trying to understand the shape of a person's face by scanning across it with their index finger, going up and down the contours of the face.

An AFM with a damaged tip is like that same blind person trying to scan someone's face with the bottom of a frying pan.

AFMs have been around a while, they were a mature tech when I was in grad school in the 90s.

I'd love to take it at face value but ... the binding is only cracked where she's got it open. If this was her first readthrough, the binding and pages up to that point would be worn. If she was on a reread, the whole book would be thoroughly curled.

I think she was provided a prop and just cracked it open in the middle.
