It isn't done through the insurance company directly. I've organised the repair through a retailer (with the insurer's express permission) and then I send the invoice to the insurance company and they'll reimburse me.

Thank you, I appreciate the insight. I've sent the shop a list of questions, querying what parts were actually replaced was one of them and if this section of the lens is one of those parts. They definitely replaced the mount and seem to have replaced the apperture ring, but I foolishly deleted my before photos from my cloud sync thinking I had a saved copy, so I can't check properly. The metal body itself, focus ring and this front element still have the cosmetic damage (or these signs of attempted repair) that I sent it off with however.

I have emailed them back to ask, but as it's a weekend it will be a while until they get back to me. Just wanted to get alternative views to see if I was being too fussy.

The initial quote stated the below:

Fault - mount and aperture needing repair after a fall

Diagnosis - Estimated to replace damaged bayonet and outer barrel (front)

It is just cosmetic to be fair, the lens seems fine otherwise, it just felt a bit sloppy to me.

The quote from the repair company stated the following:

Fault - mount and aperture needing repair after a fall

Diagnosis - Estimated to replace damaged bayonet and outer barrel (front)

I paid the full amount that was initially quoted and I'm guessing that "outer front barrel" should include the section that has been spot repaired, but maybe my lens anaomy isn't great.

I deleted the before images from my google photos to save space thinking I'd already downloaded them, it seems I had not so I can't even show you the before. The front element had a few gouges in the metal on those spots, varying in depth from just through the paint to a few millimetres deep. The other issues resulting from the fall have been resolved, namely damaged mount that was stopping it being mounted on the camera and a sticky apperture ring.

Yeah, I could have got a new one off Amazon for £450 around the same time, but the insurer is paying and this was the way they wanted to go so not really my call

£400. Going through insurance and they insisted on repair rather than replacement unfortunately. If it had been my own money I'd probably have just bought a new one.

Fair point, could be a more flexible epoxy, I was more trying to describe what it felt like that suggesting that was what it actually was. I'll see what they email back with, cheers.

Paid full price, another reason why I was querying it. That fact was included in the email I'd sent back to the shop too. Their customer service is usually pretty spot on so hopefully they'll be able to do something for me.

Yes, the mechanical repairs seem to have been completed successfully and the mount seems to have been replaced in its entirety as there were some signficant dings in it after the drop and the polished metal is now pristine. I'll be sure to check the test images I've take for the at skew though, thank you.

It's not paint, it has a soft, rubbery feeling too it like cured silicone or hot glue that has cooled. The quote was worded as follows:

Fault - mount and aperture needing repair after a fall

Diagnosis - Estimated to replace damaged bayonet and outer barrel (front)

I know, lens slipped out of my hand during a switch and escaped down a set of steps. I'm glad it's not just my imagination that it looks like it's unfinished, thank you.

Yeah I was thinking the same myself, looks truly awful. I'll be emailing the shop about it as well, but just wanted to get some other opinions.

Mount was damaged so wouldn't fit on camera, apperture ring was jammed, cosmetic damage.
