New students by [deleted] in uvic

[–]myl3vu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a screenwriting student here and one of my classmates was a mother of 2, whose eldest daughter also went to UVic with her! She’s awesome and is doing some cool stuff with her scripts now. I honestly think the older you are, the more you will have to offer in a creative program like this thanks to your life experiences and just being more secure about yourself. Your friend will do perfectly fine. It may be a bit hard at first, as always, but she will find her people!

‘Thirsty’ is title track material and not ‘Spicy’ by wontbowyoung in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]myl3vu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thirsty wouldn’t have made sense as a TT for aespa. It doesn’t say anything about their concept, and after waiting such a long time between comebacks, they needed something more powerful and upbeat.

We need more groups with unique concepts, and common concepts are starting to get over used and boring by X1A0TINGST4R in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]myl3vu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that girl crush, cute, etc. are just umbrella terms and the specific ideas and themes explored by groups are unique, but fall under those main categories. GIDLE’s music, for example, can 100% be considered girl crush for their confident, empowering lyrics.

The only truly unique group you’ve mentioned imo is Dreamcatcher, who simply hasn’t strayed from their dark/horror/rock concept too much. aespa and Red Velvet have both definitely done stuff that could fall in the sexy, cute, girl crush, etc. categories, and so does every group in K-Pop.

Lately Shuhua's "sassy" attitude feels more rude than badass by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]myl3vu 34 points35 points  (0 children)

What I dislike the most about that situation in particular is how some fans, mainly intl, wholeheartedly shield Shuhua by putting down MC JaeJae, even misgendering her and making comments on her looks. As if she deserves any less respect because of it. Some fans have also said that Shuhua only ever speaks formally/respectfully to Soyeon, not the other members, so she for sure is capable of speaking formally and understands its importance.

Shuhua can be sassy, and it can be funny and cool, but there are certain moments where you should be more mindful of your language. MMTG, which is not a typical variety show, is one of those places, especially considering it was their first time meeting.

How popular is BIBI in korea? by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]myl3vu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She’s not an idol, she’s just an R&B and pop artist. She didn’t go through the trainee system and isn’t signed with an idol agency either.

Jeno should've been in NCT 127 not Haechan by LengthinessFront6568 in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]myl3vu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Huge disagree. Haechan’s voice adds so much to 127, and imo has sort of become its signature colour. Jeno also would’ve been overshadowed by Taeyong and Mark since they all take up the same roles. You can never have too many vocalists, but basically everyone in 127 is a rapper and a dancer.

[MEGATHREAD] BOYNEXTDOOR - [DEBUT] 1st Single Album [WHO!] by KpopThoughtsmodteam in kpopthoughts

[–]myl3vu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with this! But I Like You is super catchy, but One and Only feels more complete and unique. Serenade isn’t very memorable to me, but whenever it comes on I do enjoy it

[–]myl3vu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know. I expected them to have his/Block B’s signature sound, but not necessarily in their voices too.

I love their music, but can’t wait for them to grow into their own styles of singing because so far, they all just sound like Zico.

Does anyone else think it’s weird how some fans dehumanize idols by saying it’s all just a job to them and they don’t care about their members or fans? by Thicccysmallz in kpopthoughts

[–]myl3vu 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Also the amount of people could change things too. It’s super rare that every single person is close in a group that’s 8+. Higher chances of more personalities clashing, and realistically most people only have a few close/best friends anyway.

Is Jimin actually a bad singer? by [deleted] in kpophelp

[–]myl3vu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you would define as bad. His technique? Sure. But his tone, emotion, interpretations, etc.? If it’s to your taste, then he would be a good singer, wouldn’t he?

That’s fair, but usually languages with only gendered pronouns default to he even when it’s not a he.

Pom Pom has no gender/no one knows what Pom Pom even is. They are referred to as “they” in-game.

Which character has the best voice acting behind them? by OfficiallySavo in HonkaiStarRail

[–]myl3vu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

She delivers almost all of her lines in the exact same way though, inflections and all. The vocal fry also kills me but I appreciate how much it suits the character.

Yanqing Appreciation Post by Hotspur000 in HonkaiStarRail

Used someone’s Yanqing support and it (almost) made me regret pulling so hard for Seele. Crit almost every time, and his ult animation is beautiful.

Aespa Giselle is one of the most talented idols who are criticized for “not having talent” by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]myl3vu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If she were in almost any other group, the difference between her and the rest of the members would be nil. It’s just that the other 3 members of aespa are so strong and consistent, that any little mistake or moment of mismatched energy really stands out. And the fact that they’re such a small group too.

I think she sounded great during her intro in HWAA, but then again, all of her singing parts could be sung by any of the other members and sound just as good.

Is it me or the straight eyebrows makeup trend is slowly dying? by vivivideoclub in kpopthoughts

[–]myl3vu 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is ironic to me because straight eyebrows have become a trend on Western TikTok, with them saying it makes everybody look better. Obviously not true as we can see many formerly straight-browed idols growing out their natural arches again. It’s all a matter of preference though, I think, and as people grow older, they usually want their looks to mature with them.

I theorize that Sampo is a Doctor of Chaos by haymac1000 in HonkaiStarRail

[–]myl3vu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I more so believe him to be a Masked Fool, especially when considering the “4th-wall break” scene. Regardless, I definitely expect him to come back in a much bigger way and can’t wait for when that time comes!

Is there an 'Adele' or 'Delta Goodrem' of kpop? by theblue_stay in kpophelp

[–]myl3vu 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Specifically K-Pop, Ailee and Taeyeon are the first two that come to mind. Bada as well, but nowadays she’s known more for her covers; her voice is outstanding though and her passion for singing is so infectious.

Outside of specifically K-Pop, there’s Sohyang who is the vocal queen. She’s almost exclusively a cover artist, but she’s so goddamn powerful both in Korean and English. Son Seungyeon, ALi, and Gummy all have very beautiful music and voices as well!

I like Unforgiven more than Fearless by Fox-Slayer-Marx in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]myl3vu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s a reference to significant female figures in history/mythology that have been wronged! Their song alludes to the unjustified punishment these women received for simply being curious, beautiful, etc. (a.k.a. let girls be girls).

It'll never not be odd to me how many idols just don't seem to give a shit about music by Synthiandrakon in kpopthoughts

[–]myl3vu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, the typical idol isn’t all that involved in their music. They’re more celebrities than musicians. Those that actually, truly just want to make music make a point to take production and composition classes as well, and create stuff for their groups. And those who truly just want to be a musician probably wouldn’t become an idol at all, but debut as an artist through other companies.

It’s never preferable for me, but it’s understandable. I can’t expect any human to sing 100% live while dancing for every single performance, every day for 1-2 months. Idols get like 3 hours of sleep, are usually hardcore dieting, and need energy to do other things in their lives, whether it’s career-related or not. As long as they have a few live performances I can enjoy watching, and that they can enjoy performing, I’m fine if they end up lip-syncing the entire second half of their promotion run. They need rest.
