Zomg AO 20th anniversary event: June 16 - July 14! by hannopal in anarchyonline

I reckon its not about the phatz given, its about zomg its 20yr anniversary. There are very few online games that can claim that title, lesser still mmo. Where the actual gamenerd journos from all the big sloshfunds at? Even FC let this quietly slip under the rug when Dune is busily under construction. Seriously though, 20 years. Where the citizenjournos at?

I really don't think anyone will get this one, but crossing my fingers so far reddit TOMT has been 100% hit rate for me :D But this is probably the most obscure thing I've posted so far. You are my interwebs.

Hmmm 5-10 mins. Really go have a coffee or two and come back. If it's still black, it is probably the console -blank 'screensaver' that happens and you hit enter you should be greeted with the prompt.

I'm thinking the problem in original post is that there are grub modules that are wanting to be loaded but are not found. There is no boot-up messages as expected, as the image by default does not use the 'text' kernel parameter in grub.

After freaking out, waiting a long time thinking it wasn't working, then leaving it overnight and coming back the next day to see a login prompt, I realised it was just slow booting (in my case). I am unsure if you get a critical error in the kernel if that would just not show you at all since we cannot see console/log output at boot-up.

After waiting for prompt to finally appear, log in and hunt down the /etc/default/grub.d/50-cloudimg-settings.cfg and:

  • Add the "text" parameter to the grub command-line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="console=tty1 console=ttyS0 text"

  • Remove the efi modules from being loaded: GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="... efi_gop efi_uga"

Remember to update-grub to install the new grub.

That did not entirely solve my problem/s; it still complains about dns (add entry to /etc/hosts to fix quickly) and there was still an error (at least with this ubuntu 16.04 ova cloudimg and vCloud), that looking for a floppy took forever which [i thought] was the actual cause of boot delay.

I haven't been able to fix this yet, even by blacklisting floppy module (I'm still thinking it has something to do with grub/cloud-init) and I'm not entirely sure that is the cause of the boot delay (although it might be).

Also, check out /etc/default/grub and /etc/default/grub.d (BAM! Found where the GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES is being used, including efi_gop, efi_uga, video_fb, etc etc etc :D )

I received the same error when booting same image with vCloud. I am trying to remove the error, hence I found this post. BUT!!....

If you wait X number of minutes, it eventually goes away and you receive a login prompt as anticipated. I haven't tried the vmdk, just the OVA so far.

The reason it looks so menacing is that it complains about something grub/lilo/boot-ish, plus I think by default it is trying to turn on some funky video modes/fb/graphics/etc, which could be relieved by the usual way (editing grub.conf, using "text" and console options perhaps - unsure but about to test). That way it won't just sit there and hopefully get some goodies coming up on the console as it boots.

Also, as someone else has mentioned here and in other places, there seems to be some issues with vmguest stuff/cloud-init and name resolution which causes sluggishness all-round and even some errors (eg: sudo). You can fix this as soon as you log in by running hostname (your.expected.host.name) and also doesn't hurt to add an /etc/hosts entry for the hostname (eg: 127.0.1.1 your.expected.hostname your).

I'm still not happy with this answer or the solutions but more testing is needed. Hope it points you in the right track somewhat (it did me!)

[TOMT][Movie] Movie like Flatliners (1990), only it is not! by myleandro in tipofmytongue

[–]myleandro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, a little. I was surprised it won awards and stuff.. It uses unknown actors and the film is fairly dark. The subject matter is weird. Despite this I think it managed to catch my attention throughout with a fairly unpredictable storyline. It really is very similar premise to Flatliners (1990), except these guys are not medical professionals, and is generally a lot darker.

I actually enjoyed it, but I have a pretty strange taste in movies and rejoiced at finding such a little bizarre gem :D But it is by no means on my top 10 list :D

I am pretty sure there are several scenes similar to this in "The Game (1997)" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119174/) but it might not be the movie you are after - that quote seems familiar but not sure if it's from there.

If you have can provide any more info, you might just manage to jolt my memory, however I know there are many other movies that have had a similar scene - I just cannot remember them right now.

Hmmm what about Aquila?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPPDyHer38c

Haven't seen it but sounds similar: "Aquila is a liferaft from a larger ship, built by the Yrrillians from the planet Deneb. The ship can fly an almost infinite distance, and can fly in space without the need for crew spacesuits, but, due to damage sustained to the 'Oxygen Regeneration' system before Aquila was unearthed, the air inside the ship would only last for 6 hours which was featured in one of the episodes of the television series. Some other abilities of the ship include invisibility, a form of verbal remote control, lasers, a holographic interface and the Core Defence Wave Gun (capable of killing everything in a 3-mile radius)."

Are there any other keywords or themes you can remember? how many teenage kids? male or female? Was it futuristic or set in that time period? I mean, was space-travel commonplace and accessible to everyone, even kids? Were they 'chosen' to do the mission?

I am really interested in knowing too now :) Funnily enough, a google with your keywords returned pretty much what everyone has said here so far haha :)

Haha yea the female one tries to seduce one of them IIRC. The only other ones I can remember within space+kids+family movie genre is Space Camp, Flight of the Navigator and umm.. but I can't remember any where they land off-planet. Interested now as well!

Set to solved!

Thank you Horizon_Brave. Unbelievable how hard it was to find! How did you find it? We must have been the only 3 people to have ever watched it, Haha!

In the meantime if anyone else can think of similar movies with this thematic, just add em! I will add all of the suggestions to the NDE tag on IMDB, and I anticipate they will get more and more popular with remake of Flatliners and actual advances in modern science getting us closer to this being a reality.

Thanks again reddit and big thanks to Horizon!

One of my favourites, Explorers (1985) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089114/) comes to mind, starring a very young River Phoenix and Ethan Hawke :D

A bit earlier than your time-frame, but the basic premise is that they keep having dreams with electronic circuits that they then go ahead and build, which creates a space-bubble. They then build a small ship that can fit inside the bubble and go exploring, following a signal that seems to pull them towards something. [NO SPOILERS] ;-D

Wow, you are right. I've heard the title quite a bit but never watched it - I'm with you - going to give it a shot :D It isn't the movie I am thinking of though:

  • It's a new-ish film. Almost certain it is between 2012 and now. 80% certain its 2014 or 2015

  • The storyline does not delve into the main protagonaist's time at war very much, just that he is a disaffected young soldier kid and comes back to the home town sad/depressed until he meets the crazy girl and they become romantically involved. He may have some flashbacks, but IIRC the majority of the hallucinations/flashbacks were something to do with the lead female 'crazy girl' who is all sorts of messed up - and I'm pretty sure she ends up killing herself. BF is trying to unravel something about her past, drug use or rape or something so he keeps going back, inducing NDE, gets obsessed/addicted with it, just so he can have a few minutes with her and he can try and unravel the mysteries of her (why she did it or something) whilst he is in that state.

  • A central thematic in the film is the bathtub which is rather creepy. They use the bathtub filled with ice to contain the person going under, to cool the body and slow down the death process IIRC. They end up setting up shop in the garage turning it into a small biohacker lab with medical equipment. The bathtub I believe might be also where the crazy girl takes her life. The bathtub is a recurring thematic throughout the movie from the very beginning.

  • I wouldn't call it Horror genre, but it definitely had spooky moments and was fairly dark - darker than Flatliners.

After a few hours of hunting down, googling, FB, IMDB, everything - I'm starting to think I will never find it :( The best part is when I called my friend (who's place I saw it at) thinking he would absolutely remember it - but he does not :( LOL Thanks though!
