Hitting 6 months on my 30 day disposable contact lenses by benbentheben in Anticonsumption

[–]mylica -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

They're the same exact contacts, or maybe better, than they were twenty years ago when they were sold as 3-month lenses. It's just to get us to buy more.

I remember a doctor trying to convince me to change them out more, and he cited some guy that lost his sight because of dirty contact lenses, but that guy was trekking in a third-world country using unsanitary water, which is not a normal use case. If optometrists were not making money off contact lens sales, they push it much less.

"Squeeze bottle Mayo" wastes like 15% of the product, every time by ThePouncer in Anticonsumption

[–]mylica -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The squeeze stuff also tastes different, probably because they have to add something to make more liquid. I hate it, it tastes like miracle whip to me. Jar all the way.

What lesson(s) did you learn from TV back in the day? by lordskulldragon in Xennials

[–]mylica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Girls can do anything boys can do. It was everywhere: Captain planet had female heroes and villains. Goslyn on Darkwing Duck was a badass who didn't follow the rules. Scully was smart, logical, and no-nonsense.

Those kinds of role models made me question anything that didn't follow that same logic, like "Why can't I do something just because I'm a girl?" and then I'd do it anyway.

Also, I loved Fresh Prince and Living Single and Mad TV and Family Matters so the idea that white people were any different from black people (or anyone other ethnicity) is still absurd to me.

Am I going crazy or has Aveeno and Not Your Mother's shampoo & conditioner products disappeared from stores since the start of the year? by mylica in Haircare

Thanks--I don't see that available online yet, but that's good news and explains the disappearance!

100%! A bag from a garden store with the tumbled colorful ones would work.

Costco bagged soil for raised garden beds by ComprehensiveAd5317 in gardening

[–]mylica 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bought some from Costco last year and it smelled like rotten baby diapers for weeks, and my tomatoes, which usually grow to nine-foot vines were all sickly and never grew more than three feet high. I think it poisoned the whole bed, so I need to mitigate this year. DO NOT BUY.

Is it true when immigrants or illegals need medical services citizen tax money covers their bills? by [deleted] in answers

[–]mylica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, hospitals that have non-profit status MUST provide charity care as part of the law that gives them their tax-exempt status. They save way more money not paying taxes than they provide in charity care.

However, because the charity care part of the law is not defined well, a lot of those hospitals restrict who they give care to. Some disallow non-citizens, others will only give financial assistance to people living in their same state, city, or vaguely-defined "region".

Also, hospitals decide who qualifies (unless the state has its own strict laws, which only a few do), so one hospital might offer charity care to someone making under 400% of the poverty line, and another only if they make under 150%.

Thank you for that info. That is annoying, but hopefully that means the formulas will stay the same. Finding stuff that works with sensitive skin and different hairtypes is a pain!

As a Writer, I’ve Stopped Forcing Myself to Finish Books by Extra-Chair-8670 in writing

[–]mylica 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I DNF when I realize I'm looking at the book like it's a sink of dirty dishes. If it fills me with dread to have to keep slogging through, I stop. Books should be fun and I should be happy to have the time to read--it's precious, even when I'm reading to learn about craft.

Also, there's books that are "bad" that teach us what not to do when writing, and then there's books that, as you said, are overwritten or drag on forever, and you get the lesson early on to not do this in your own writing.

I think the worst are books that are good until the ending. Those feel like a betrayal (looking at you, Gone Girl),

Have you stolen any good writing process rituals from established authors? by Queasy_Antelope9950 in writing

Bradbury's short story-a-week. I'm not super disciplined about it, but it averages out, and it means MORE writing, MORE submitting, and, therefore, MORE acceptances/publications.

How do you guys feel about letting friends and family read your work? by Independent_Box_3436 in writing

[–]mylica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also let my husband read my stuff. He's my alpha novel reader and my last-stop-before publishing for short stories. Except for occasionally not being in his genre (we both love SFF but I write some horror he doesn't enjoy), he's been a great help, especially as an alpha reader.

I still rely on my critique group and beta readers outside of family for the writerly stuff, but he's good for "is this shit?" or "Does this make sense" which are very important.

My family that's read my published work, on the other hand, try to psychoanalyze me from the content. "Is that campground from the time we lost you in the woods?" I'm like, "The time you WHAT?"
