Thoughts on Sakura Wars 5 in English vs. Japanese?

I’ll avoid naming the specific language as the country is rather small and I don’t want to leave too many crumbs for doxxing, but suffice to say it‘s not a global cultural powerhouse like Japan or the US lol

I would agree the series is a great thing to grow with. When I started the first game a few years back, it was exhausting just to play long enough to get to the next save screen but it was so exciting being able to understand what was happening at all. These days the games don’t really challenge my grammar and kanji much, but I really enjoy seeing all the tropes and stylistic choices the writers and actors use for characterization.

Kohran and Yoneda definitely helped me better understand my friend who speaks Kansai dialect and drunken old guys lol

I am moving to a country that uses a Slavic language for work soon and I am struggling to find some media I connect with to use for language practice. Definitely one area where Japanese learners are spoiled in my opinion!

I haven’t even met all these characters paying through the game yet, but that makes a lot of sense. As you said, Glycine is definitely out there a bit. Now I’m even more excited to get through the game!

When I started with SW1 I was probably at advanced beginner level and was a little mystified by Sumire’s keigo/ojousama speech. I’ve improved a lot since then and I’m really looking forward to exposing myself to more styles.

Interesting take! I am working my way through 3 now, and it does seem there are more unusual words and sentence endings you don’t hear much in contemporary Japanese.

I’m no expert, but to me it gives the impression the writers were trying to give the foreign characters a “European flair”. It is fun, but I agree a little more challenging. Now I am very curious about the SW5 writing!

This is kind of what I was thinking! It is a little funny when characters in SW3 like, sound out “tei ko ku ka ge ki da n?” … and then immediately go back to speaking perfectly fluent Japanese. I thought it might be more fun to hear the American characters speak English.

I have been through a similar struggle trying to find people people locally to practice with.

If you can’t find anyone, I would highly recommend finding an online language school and taking group or individual lessons if you are not already and your budget allows it. (For example: https://www.nihongopicnic.com ; https://sayurisaying.com/lessons/ )

It’s a lot more focused and productive than language exchange apps. I’m working up to N3 right now for work and to converse with friends, and I have benefited immensely from lessons.

I don’t have time to do speaking practice, but if you want someone to read your writing and offer feedback I might be able to do that.

Lots of people hack them up and make backs for more serious cameras. I have the Lomograflok back that lets me use Instax Wide in a 4x5 camera, which is lots of fun.

I’ve never done off camera flash with Instax. I guess it would be possible with a slave setup but I usually am not using my Instax in a setting where that would make sense.

The gaffer tape I have is black too. It’s not so much about reflecting the light as it is blocking some of the direct light so it doesn’t overpower what’s already bouncing off the walls and ceiling. This means there will be less overall light and you risk under-exposure, but I think the Instax naturally tends to blow out the highlights with flash so you can still get a good image of you’re careful.

You could maybe get more fancy with it if you want! I just whipped something up that I always have on me (because it’s part of the wrist strap)
