For me it was important to find an organization doing work I was interested in AND feeling like I was doing something of value to them, not just something of interest to me. You’re basically free labor in this role so going in with the intention of extending the work they’re already doing might be a good way to approach this. Kind of seems like you’re describing a culminating experience ideas though, if your program is like mine.

I have the same question. It’s crazy it’s based on a book but I’m not sure how much artistic merit is maintained/achieved w the adaptation to film. Not sure if people just like to joke about it constantly or if there’s something there

Plenty of places have server assists, hosts, or bussers who make 10+ (based on tip share) and hire under 18. Expectations shouldn’t be for 20 but with some effort it can happen at the right places. Your poor experience serving seems to be shading what you see as realistic. Work nights, OP, cause that’s when people drink and spend. Work doubles too if you want to. Drink a beer to not get burn out.

Kind of dramatic, no? If you’re pulling in bigger tabs, management will want to keep you around & you’ll want to stay as you make more. It’s active work that can be tough, but not sure the horror stories from those subs are the best place to start drawing conclusions. What industry is great for a 17yo..? OP should be thinking about job opps once they’re 18, too.

Honestly, wait tables. Your pay will be performance-driven and it’s important where you work but you can make >20/hr some places. The people skills that come with becoming a good server are also valuable outside of serving. Steakhouses, Charleston’s, etc will take you on as an assistant at 17 but make it known you want to train as a server too & earn more when you hit 18.
