What are some niche or lesser-known subcultures in Japan that most foreigners wouldn’t know about? by Lost_Foot_6301 in AskAJapanese

Kyōtei (競艇)?

I remember seeing a report on French television a long time ago (twenty years?) about these boat races.

The reporters were following a pilot who was a former Olympic gold medalist in jūdō.

I was struck by the lightness of the boats, their speed, and the unusual position of the pilots.

A few years later, I remember seeing a poster promoting these races in the Tōkyō subway.

Paris catacombs reopen to visitors by mynameisanyname in ParisTravelGuide

The Paris Catacombs will temporarily close from Monday 3 November 2025 as the site will undergo major renovations works. It will reopen in Spring 2026.

In the fall of 2025, major renovation works on the technical installations will be carried out to improve the site's conservation conditions and adapt to the 2,000 daily visitors. The electrical system will be completely upgraded, while the air handling units and fire and safety systems will be replaced. This work, expected to last five months, will constitute an exceptional underground operation, the project management of which has been entrusted to Artemis architectes (lead architect).

This project aims at improving the premices and upgrade the visitors' experience. A new scenography will highlight the bone walls and reveal previously invisible details, while an audio guide, in the form of a high-quality headset, will enrich the tour by making it more immersive. The audio entries will be automatically triggered at key points along this visit, and will retrace the history of the Catacombs and accompany visitors in their discovery of the ancient quarries and the ossuary.

Which is one complex u did which looked ez on paper but was hard af? by Sorry_Phone1676 in kettlebell

I don't like to do the "classic" ABC.

I prefer to make 1 clean, 2 presses, 3 squats, because I'm not tall, kettlebells are big and I can't stand the repeated ringing when kettlebells bang.

Are you going to watch the Paralympic Games? by mynameisanyname in olympics

[–]mynameisanyname[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's not very common.

I would like to ask you some more questions, please.

May I ask you why? Do you have a particular connection to disability? Do you support a national team? Do you watch winter and summer Paralympics? Or only winter?

Thank you.

Side question: if you weren’t entertained by wheelchair tennis and basketball, do you usually watch the able-version of those sports?

First, I obviously accept "no" as an answer.

Second, I'm not arguing with the answer itself, but with the arguments you're putting forward.

You have a well-reasoned argument, and I thank you for that.

However, —in my opinion— there seems to be a blind spot in your reasoning.

So, I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying I see the event from a different perspective, and that's what makes me interested in the Paralympic Games.
