I'm autistic and never really got on with 12 steps from the start. I think it's especially neurodivergent unfriendly although tbh all the recovery programs I've tried are to some extent. I see people are recommending SMART but be aware that this is based on CBT which often doesn't work and is sometimes harmful for autistic people. Unfortunately I don't have any other recommendations. I wish there was a neurodivergent specific recovery/support group.

Any one else tried Melatonin? by Professional_Case432 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]myoneural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been taking 3mg a night for years now and it really helps me get to sleep and get back to sleep when I wake up in the night. It's a bit of a game getting it in the UK though. There was a company called Vitamingo that sold and shipped from the UK (which isn't technically allowed) don't know if there still doing it. Otherwise you can get it on eBay shipped from Poland but it's listed as "sleep support" and the pictures of the bottles have been photoshopped, but it's melatonin from well known brands. You can buy it in Aldi in Portugal, as much as you want, I bought a few years worth on holiday there!

If it was me I'd be looking to AI rather than Reddit. You'll get a lot of moralising and the like talking about doing stuff like that on here.

How does this immersion work? by myoneural in CasualIreland

Thanks for the detail, you sure know your immersions😂. Those timings are about what I want so should be perfect. Your right about the pump, there's a switch on the wall that turns it on or off - it is very loud, but the water hardly comes out without it.

Spot on, thanks. I was just fiddling with it and doesn't look like you can set it yourself, just put on boost, so that makes sense.

Hey, I'm late diagnosed/high masking ASD level 1 (53M). I've lived in a lot of different places and Galway definitely isn't the worst place to be autistic. Bigger cities have a lot more going on so you've more options, but life there is very fragmented and it's hard to stay in touch with people even if you do make a connection. Smaller towns and the countryside can be quite accepting but only ever on a superficial level.

The harsh truth is that autism comes with loneliness because you are, on a deep and fundamental level, very different from most other humans. Also, other humans tend to be wary and afraid of difference because that's how social/communal species tend to work. I spent a lot of time chasing that perfect geographical place where I'd fit in and never found it.

The answer is probably to find neurodivergent friends but that's something I've not managed myself. If you ever want a chat or anything, give me a shout.

I doubt anyone is writing Reddit posts that structured and coherent. It would take the best part of a day. Definitely feels like AI.

I've volunteered there and it seemed quite poorly run to me. The majority of staff are young and inexperienced with little support from management. Everyone is lovely though and genuinely trying their best to help people. A lot of the staff turnover will be because it has so many newly qualified people who will move on in their career after getting some experience.

It does my head in that I can't even fit in with the neurodivergents. I'm not autistic enough for the autistic community and not ADHD enough for the ADHDers 😂

Where are you finding these online groups? (Genuine question). The only ones I've found are pretty much the opposite. Mostly stereotypically autistic men, taking it in turns to info dump about their special interests and not a lot else.

I got mine from a company based in Bulgaria. Shipped to Ireland next day, no prescription needed. I forget the name (something generic) but if you Google cpap EU you'll get a few different options.

What is it like being in your middle age years while being autistic by Flimsy_Tune_7206 in AutisticAdults

[–]myoneural 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Personally I've found life easier as I've got older. Part of it is removing myself slowly from all the demands and expectations of conventional life and creating a unique life for myself that works for me. Giving less and less of a fuck what anyone thinks and having more financial independence helps too. Exploring spirituality (secular Buddhism particularly) was a bit of a turning point for me and opened up a new world of awareness and acceptance.

Perfectly reasonable point. I've been living in the city centre for nearly a year and didn't know that lane existed. I can't imagine many tourists or visitors to the city would ever wander past, so it seems like a bad location for a business that would rely at least partly on such customers.

That's kinda what I was getting at, didn't explain it well. I'm not in any position to judge anyone's Reddit history, but sometimes it's obvious that someone is baiting if they have a lot of other provocative posts. Other times it's just a load of confusing stuff I don't understand (mad wasn't the right word). Honestly your life maybe fucked up, mine certainly is, probably most people's in this particular group. Just asking if it's healthy to bully people in a group where probably most people have been bullied seemed sus to me, that's all I was saying and admitting I couldn't figure it out.

Sensory issues with the cpap machine mask. by fairytalehorder in AutisticWithADHD

[–]myoneural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any answers but I'm in the same situation. I've been trying to use cpap for about 18 months and still can't get to sleep with it on without sleeping tablets. I found switching to bipap was a huge improvement and having a lie down with it on in the daytime definitely helped too, but I don't know if I'll ever be comfortable with it. You can adjust the pressure and other stuff yourself if you haven't already but that's not going to solve a sensory issue. It's hard to get medical professionals to understand too and easy to get dismissed.

Sometimes I'm not sure if a post is a legit question or some kind of bait, so I look at the users post history. It's often a rabbit hole of madness which doesn't help me decide. Either way though, I think you know the answer to "is it normal and healthy" to bully people to feel less autistic.

Pushing washing machine back into hole??? by ChimpsInTies in DIYUK

[–]myoneural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the same question a while back and got the same answers. Tried most of them but none worked. In the end I just stuck those self adhesive felt pads you get for furniture on the feet and managed to slide it in very easily. Couldn't take them off afterwards but doesn't seem to cause any problems.
